The Thursday with library visits and Burger Wisconsin

Hi,

Yes - the library visit just happened to coincide with a Burger Wisconsin meal.  Not too sure how that association has sprung up.  Might have something to do with them being within 100m of each other.  Mere supposition on my part though.

We also popped into John and Christine's place afterwards for a cup of tea.  Christine has her first competition dressage event this weekend and was off practising.  Good luck!

Friday today and a gorgeous day here in Wellington.  The sort of day that makes you glad you live here.  I think there are usually about 5 days like that every year.  Mostly in February.  And not generally quite enough to make you appreciative of the grotty days that howl southerlies in and whip washing up into a frenzy.

Our garage renovations are progressing.  Well, the garages are changing.  Whether it is progressing terribly much is another thing.  Our garage that houses the little green car (the previously asbestos-clad one) is now just a concrete pad.  All the framing has vanished as it was rotten and far easier to remove entirely and start again.  That garage is going to be all new.  The new framing has actually gone up already and the builders have their hands full squaring off the walls and foundations.  A bit ropey in its original building I think.  Maybe they just used line of sight (a squinty sight) to square it originally.  Anyhow, you can see it will be fantastic soon.  And we'll have power to it and be able to open the doors from the car instead of parking hanging out into the road and scuttling up to open it and hoping no buses come past at that moment.

Ok.  Weekend plans sound like fun.  Some friends have their 25th wedding anniversary so their son is staying for a sleepover with Toby (Jack) on Saturday night.  We wish them all the best.  And then we're off to Waikanae for dinner (BBQ) and a good play time (playing is for Toby - hopefully our conversation will be slightly more adult).  Hopefully a walk while we're there too.  Sunday is Tom's birthday party so that should be good.  We'll take the bouncy castle along.

Have a great weekend.
Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with nice weather and seeing Toby again

Hi,

I enjoyed my ride up the hill to collect Toby from Jack's house.  Their house is on the top of the hill overlooking the harbour/city and it feels so much closer than our house.  I was still full of energy when I hopped off at their house.  Collected Toby and enjoyed our walk back.  On the way we practised skip counting in 4s and we were passed by an older woman who said she remembered doing that.

Anyhow, Toby and I had tea while Mike worked and then went to tramping club.  Then he rode home.  Toby is planning great movies and is hatching plans to produce a DVD to sell to the masses (I sense Christmas presents this year to family will have Toby's movies in there somehow).  However, a film director has to cut their teeth somewhere.  http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mrgilbe1&aq=f  This is Toby's first movie for public viewing.  It's called My iPod Video (the others are his Footloose talent quest and some dubious music video Mike has posted).  His current favourite toys feature highly.  You may see my feet in the background at various times.  I think I was getting tea ready and listening to music.  Hope I wasn't singing!

Library visit tonight after tea.  Good Thursday night entertainment.  :-)

Have a great day!

Angela

The Tuesday back at work

Hi,

Where is Toby again?  He's already off on a sleepover so I haven't seen him since his dentist visit yesterday evening.  We dropped him at Jack's house on the way back up the hill and he flew into Jack's room and I never saw him again.  His dental appointment went well, and he was happy to have no fillings.  I think he was quite nervous about it.  Maybe a sign he thinks he has been lax with his brushing technique?  I must probe that line of inquiry with him.

So we'll pick him up today after work from Jack's house.  Then home to pack for the weekend.  Hope the weather stays vaguely ok as the Tabors are muttering about pulling the pin on the rafting.  Something about rain.  So long as the river is ok, I say it's fine!

Last night Mike started scanning in film negatives.  Stay tuned for odd photos from the past from time to time.  What did Mike call it?  "Photos from the archives".  It's certainly a blast from the past.

We watched more tennis from the Australian Open.  Good fun!

Have a marvellous day!

The long weekend with Toby's return

Hi,

It was an odd weekend with me waiting (im) patiently for Toby's return very late on Sunday night.  Let's see...  Friday night was takeaway night at Vivienne and John's place with Mike getting a little waylaid after work.  The evening passed in fine form with music and pleasant conversation.  More please!

Saturday morning was later than expected with Mike sleeping off some of the excesses of the night before.  But before too long he was up and at the garage.  With Andrew helping!  He had been to the Safety Shop and had all the kit and within 4 hours of starting - they were finished!  You should see the garage.  it is bare studs and a roof now.  No walls at all.  Sally popped over and we had tea and then they were off.

Sunday was quiet and I watched lots of Australian Open tennis as Mike had pumped it up to High Definition just for my viewing pleasure.  Eventually the time came to collect Dad and Toby from the airport.  It was so nice to see them both.  I got a nice hug and Dad explained to Mike on the way home that Toby had the patience of a saint because Tyler and Abby both wanted him all the time.  Heheheh.  I think Toby likes the attention.

It was late before we hit the bed (1am) and we slept in.  Jack came to visit with his Dad for a bit for morning tea and then Jack stayed for lunch and then Toby took off to Te Papa with Jack and his Dad for the afternoon.  I went to John and Christine's for yummy afternoon tea and then home to clear the garage.

Work starts today on our garages and Mike is taking the asbestos sheets he removed on Saturday to the hazardous waste landfill this morning.  I expect the roof will be off by the time I get home today.

Mike will also take Toby to the dentist this afternoon.  It's all go.

Angela

The Thursday with a library visit

Hi,

We walked up to Wadestown library after work to meet John and Christine.  Wee Tom is already 5 years old, so he isn't that wee anymore.  He starts school at the Side School in tow weeks!  His birthday is Jan 14.  Unlike everyone else in the world whose birthday is Jan 17.  ;-)  But as his mother said:  he's before his time.

We ate Burger Wisconsin at their house after stocking up on library books.  Shhhh.  Don't tell Toby.  He likes Burger Wisconsin and I have told him on the phone we're doing nothing exciting here except awaiting his return.

Went home around 8pm and now we have to confess something.  We seem to have lost our cat.  Merlot has been missing since Sunday night - that was the last time she came and smooched with us.  Pretty sure she hasn't been to eat any food.  And now Mike says I mustn't keep food out as we need to lure her back to us.  So we went door-knocking at the neighbours places last night asking if they had seen her.

We met (again) the new neighbours on the corner.  They are Americans, from New Jersey.  They seem like very nice people and love reading (and possibly might be writing books as well, judging from a comment made).  They have told me to come in and choose a book virtually when I want.  And their taste is remarkably like mine.  With an American flavour.

But, at least we determined they haven't seen Merlot since the weekend.  The neighbours across the way are sure they have seen her in the last few days so we haven't given up hope.  We suspect someone is home from holidays and so pleased to see her she is getting fed Fancy Feast every day and patted.  That's our theory.

I hope she turns up before Toby gets home.

Weekend plans include taking the garage lining off, emptying said garage, storing said garage stuff somewhere, buying safety equipment to remove said garage lining.  Pretty much all weekend will be spent working on the garage.  Sigh!

Hope your weekend looks better than our one.  But at least Toby will be home on Sunday night (midnight) and we'll see Dad as well.  And we have Monday off (a long weekend here).

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with lovely weather

Hi,

Well, Mike had mapped out a quite boring evening of Sharepoint user group meetings followed by a tramping club night.  Yawn.  But my boss stepped in and suggested to Mike that he take me to Restaurant 88 on Tory St. instead.  What a great idea!  Restaurant 88 is a Vietnamese restaurant with great decor and lovely food.

We walked back to work around 7pm and rode home.  The weather was so nice and the ride home was nice and fast.

Back at home, we sparked up the brazier for more Angela-scaring.  What fun!  Not.  Even Mike decided the wind was too much after a while and we sat while the embers cooled chatting to Toby and Karen in Sydney.

Ok.  Time to have a nice cup of tea.
Have a great day!

Angela

The Tuesday with hot, humid weather

Hi,

Wellington out-did Sydney yesterday int he weather stakes.  And we could have done without those sorts of conditions.  So hot.  27C.  And 27C here is hotter than 27C anywhere else I've ever been.  Not too sure why.  The humidity was 70% and it certainly had everyone talking.  Our office air conditioner couldn't keep up.  I resorted to drinking water in the afternoon.

Anyhow, we rode home in the sweltering conditions and scoffed some dinner before heading to Vivienne and John's place to pick up some of their window catches.  Their house looks amazing.  Good on them!  Their vision is paying off already!

A short stay there before our first Cub planning meeting for the year.  It took a lot longer than we anticipated but we have a plan for term 1 now.

Then off to the Sampson household for some other jobs (computer RAM and lantern battery checks).  I scored a nice cup of tea.  And I was chuffed to hear Hannah passed her learner's theory the day before and was having her first driving lesson with her dad.  We're already plotting our evenings out in mid winter when Hannah can sit her restricted and drive to babysitting engagements on her own!  Heheheheh.

Have a wonderful day!

The Monday with dinner out and a roaring fire

Hi,

Our dinner out after work, with friends who are also without their child for this part of the school holidays, went very well.  We had a drink at the local near work (it is quite nice - the GP on the corner of Boulcott and Willis) and then went upstairs for dinner.  I had a nice Jambalaya as did Hamish.  Mike's beef steak looked scrumptious.  We had a good chat and then Mike and I headed back to work (it is just next door) and on our bikes for the ride home.

When we got home, Mike decided to use the brazier to burn lots of our garden waste.  The wind had almost died down.  Apart from swirling strong gusts that sent me fleeing from my ringside seat in a flurry of embers and disturbed the romantic notion of sipping sparkling red grape juice, cuddling Mike, whilst reading my book.  Mike had the garden hose on standby (and did use it, but not to put out potential threatening fires, just to dampen down the surrounds).  In the end, the combination of tinder-dry wood and twigs and the swirling winds bringing stacks of oxygen to the flames meant Mike burned through about half of the pile.  Amazing.

Don't tell Toby as he loves brazier nights.  They don;t happen often as the wind is often too strong.  Bit like last night really.  Heheheh.

We have a cub meeting tonight, but hope to pop in to see Vivienne and John before that (and after our tea at home).  They have window catches like ours, so it makes sense to rescue some of theirs before they get carted out of their property as waste.

Have a great day!

Love,
Angela

The weekend with no Toby

Hi,

Oh, I miss wee Toby.  He is enjoying life in Sydney with his cousins while I mope around missing him here.  Well, kind of.  Heheheh.

Saturday we headed to Sally and Andrew's place for lunch and then back home to read.  Oh yeah!  Then I may have fallen asleep in the sun, on the couch, with my book.  Then back to collect Sally and Andrew for dinner at Maharajahs and then a movie.  We saw "The American" with George Clooney and a bunch of Italians. It was set in Italy and very European, despite the title.  Good though.

Sunday we got stuck into some tasks.  I tidied Toby's room and the toy box in the lounge.  Mike rebuilt several PCs.  Riveting entertainment.

We're out to dinner tonight with other friends who have sub-let their child to grandparents for two weeks.  Should be pleasant to catch up with them.

Other plans include dinner in Waikanae, a Cub planning night and dinner with John and Christine.  Woo hoo!  Should keep me too busy to think about Toby constantly.

Happy birthday to everyone born today.  Which is loads of people.  Hannah.  Duncan.  Emerson.  Others I have met in the deep, dark past.

Have a marvellous week.
Love,
Angela

The Thursday with work and not much play

Hi,

Yesterday went well - the weather cleared up and it was lovely in the evening.  And today is a superb day - blue skies, no wind.  Toby is off to Sydney for a week with Grandy and Gramps today and I dropped him at their place this morning.  I drove there in the wee green car with the roof down and it was so nice I wanted to keep driving.  Taupo would be nice on a day like this!

Anyhow, Toby is waiting for the flight at Grandy and Gramps's house and they will drive into my work at lunchtime and I'll drive them out to the airport.  At least there is no sign of fog - it seems to have dogged most of their recent flights.

Because Toby is away, we don't have much on for the weekend.  Some housework.  Some gardening.  That'll be about it.

Have a great weekend.
Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with Toby Sports Day

Hi,

Well, when we picked Toby up from Skids, he was underwhelmed with the Sports Day.  He spluttered for a while and then came out with "They made us do maths!".  I never heard anything much about running, jumping, relays, sack races or anything like that.  Zip.  Nada.  But I heard all about some game they played where you had to complete an equation to get a go.  Toby was outraged.

We got home and ate yummy bread rolls with fresh fillings.  Lettuce, tomatoes - stuff like that.  The smoked manuka chicken was treated oddly by Toby.  He fished it out of his roll and finished his roll.  Then ate the chicken separate.  Not too sure why.

We have packed Toby's bag for Sydney.  He's ready to go!

Not much on really.  A cup of tea would be great just about now.

Have  a wonderful day!

Angela

The Tuesday with Narnia

Hi,

Tuesday's weather came right and it was a perfect evening.  Just right for... going to the movies.  Heheheh.  We went to see Voyage of the Dawn Treader with Sally and Andrew.  Sally was keen to see it and I thought Toby would like it.  And he did.  That and the huge bucket of popcorn he got to munch on.

We dropped Sally and Andrew home and collapsed into our beds shortly thereafter.

Today is sports day at Skids and Toby is so thrilled.  Not.  He'll enjoy himself anyway.  He likes Skids.

Mum might pop over to cook up a storm for dinner tonight.  And Dad will come to our house after work.  He is working his days off this week and having Thursday and Friday off instead (then annual leave).

Time to get stuck in.

Have a great day!

Angela

The day with gorgeous weather

Hi,

Well, at least the weather was superb for my first day back at work.  Mike is still a bit woolly-headed after his migraine yesterday but we're both in at work this morning.  We dropped Toby off at Skids (for a day where he makes ice cream - he is very pleased about today!) and drove in.  This is because we need to collect Toby from Skids at 5pm and take him to the movies with Aunty Sally.  Sally really wants to see Voyage of the Dawn Treader (the Narnia movies continued).  Sounds like a plan.

Not much else to report.  I need a cup of tea.  Have a great day!

Love,
Angela

The Monday back at work

Hi,

What a glorious Monday morning.  One of the best.  It was a shock to get up at 6am after two weeks of sleeping in.  But I managed to get up and get to the shower.  I had everything sorted last night (bike gear put, work gear packed) so it was relatively easy.  Mike stumbled out of bed 30 mins later, gulped down some migraine tablets and went back to bed.  He has a migraine!

Mike worked all weekend in our garden and in Sally and Andrew's garden, taking loads to the tip.  I think he got dehydrated and that has caused his migraine.  Seems to happen after a lot of hard work.  He got his migraine in time so hopefully he'll come right quickly.

Toby got up slowly this morning but he was perky once he got up.  He has got used to late nights and long sleep ins too.  But we had a good morning.  Our walk to Skids (Toby's school holiday programme at the same place as his after school care) was very nice.  And my ride into work went well too.

Work is like I haven't been away.  Nothing changes.

Toby is away this Friday with Grandy and Gramps to Sydney for a week.  Gramps brings him back the following weekend.  He is really looking forward to it.

I know you're all keen to hear about the camping.  It was such great fun - I could easily make it an annual event.  I will jot down my thoughts on the camping holiday and post it at some stage soon.  Suffice to say, I loved seeing Toby riding his bicycle around, swimming in the river and playing with kids all day.  And I did get lots of book reading in as well.  Hooray!

Have a great week.
Love,
Angela
