Our cat Merlot - what goes on in her pea-sized brain

Good morning on Fri, Jan 29

Hi,

What another great morning in Wellington.  No sign of the sun yet as we're blanketed by fog yet again.  However, there is not a breath of wind.  Toby and I slept in bed with the two windows open, and the curtains never moved at all.  Well, apart from when the cat climbed in underneath them.  Oh, and when Mike got home he never had the keys so he came around to the window and said he could climb in to stop me getting out of bed to open the door.  But I said no to that slightly silly suggestion.  However, it may have made the curtains move a little as well.

I think we might be experiencing summer!  It is usually a little longer than a week but this year most people seem to be in agreement that a week might be all we get here.  My parents might have missed summer in Wellington by being in Sydney when we got the nice weather.  Heheheh.

Tonight I'm off to the movies with Sally, Vivienne and Vicki (friend of Sally and Andrew's) to see "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep.  Should be entertaining enough.

Mike got home late after the AC/DC concert and although I'd love to make up some guff about how awful it was, I went back to sleep when he got home last night and haven't heard anything about it.  I got a muffled "It was good" this morning when I kissed them both goodbye.  That is the extent of my review on it thus far.  Apparently the Dom Post is full of it.  So the radio told me anyway.

The weekend approaches.  Mike is off tramping tomorrow.  I think we might try and get Toby a haircut and watch Carrie (work colleague) swim around the lighthouse in the harbour and then head off to Waikanae.  Unless my cold get worse, which it might.  Then I might just take it easy instead.  How I can have a cold in the middle of "summer" is beyond me!

Hopefully we get the television hooked up this weekend.  Toby is having withdrawals.  We went around to check on Ngaio last night (well, not the entire suburb, just Ma and Pa's house) and Toby saw the TV and his eyes lit up.  "Can I watch Cartoon Network?"  So he did.  And had a bath.  It was hot, remember?

Ok.  Time to get stuck in.
Have a great weekend.
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Thurs, Jan 28

Hi,

Another great blat down this hill this morning - long may it continue!  The weather forecast is looking pretty good for the next few days.  Hooray!

Toby and I arrived home last night to find our groceries delivered on the doorstep.  It meant we could cook up some fresh food instead of defrosting ancient chicken from the freezer.  We had a yummy dinner of honey and soy chicken kebabs, with rice.

The last book bought at Amazon for Toby's Christmas arrived (it was from a different seller, hence the delay compared to the other books) and Toby promptly read the whole thing.  When we went down to his bedroom to put him to bed, he only had three pages left to read.  I was astonished and flicked through the book asking him questions about things I saw.  He answered them all.  I might see if I can find similar books on Amazon again.

I feel very pleased and proud when I see Toby stuck in a book.  He's just like I was when I was little.  I can't get him to do a thing.  But, I'm secretly happy about that.  He told me the other evening that cycling was not his sport and that he thinks it is reading!  I said reading wasn't a sport.  So Toby said it was fishing.  Huh?

Today is Wheels Day at Skids.  I'm hoping Toby will take his bicycle as well as his scooter.  I'd like him to practise a bit more.

Mike has the AC/DC concert on tonight and he seems to be looking forward to it.  Something else I don't understand.  A work colleague spoke to him and then told me she didn't know Mike was a closet AC/DC fan.  I said Mike's so far in that closet that we don't even own a single CD of AC/DCs.  So he's off to spend vast amounts of money seeing a bunch of rowdy has-beens.  Whatever!  I think I can think of one song of theirs.  I wonder how well Mike will do with the songlist.

Toby and I will pop over to Ngaio this evening to check on Ma and Pa's house.  I'm sure everything will be fine.  I'm hoping to find Toby's DS Lite charger over there!  Can't find it anywhere!  But I did find the cable remote last night which has been missing for three weeks.

That's about it.  I'm sure I have forgotten something I was going to mention.  Never mind.

Have a marvellous day!
Love,
Angela

Toby tramping in the weekend

Good morning on Wed, Jan 27

Hi,

It is a lovely, if foggy, day here in Wellington.  There was no wind and my ride down the hill was superb.  Our view over the valley to where the Lewises live was beautiful.  By 7am it was clearing over the hilltops with blue skies, and the fog just snuggled into the crevices of the valleys.  However it is all tempered by the forecast of thundery showers this evening.  I might be quite wet when I collect wee Toby.  My Mummy, the drowned rat.  He's seen it before, many times.  I don't think many Mummys collect their kids by bicycle at Toby's school.  BMWs, yes.

Toby went to Staglands yesterday with Skids.  We had seen the sign for the place at the weekend and we thought it'd be good to visit.  I went there when I was about 8 years old while on holiday visiting my cousins with my grandmother.  It was very rustic then and I was wondering how it had changed with the times.  So, I tied our good point-and-click digital camera to Toby's backpack and cautioned him about being careful with it and asked him to take photos.  I should have spent less time cautioning him and more time telling him I wanted photos of Staglands.  When I collected him I asked how his photography went.  He said it ran out of batteries.  When we downloaded it, we could see lots of photos of Skids: the tables at Skids, the kids at Skids, their surprised parents (very stunned looking photos) and other random events in Toby's life that day: the inside of the car that took Toby to Staglands, a lamp-post, a car park, and finally about 5 photos of Staglands itself.  Despite me being none the wiser about Stanglands in the new millenium, it made me laugh quite a bit.

We went around to Toby's school after tea and Toby rode his bicycle for a bit.  If the thundery showers hold off, we'll do the same tonight too.  Toby has to be proficient by Easter at riding on a gravel trail.  I think we're whistling Dixie.  Or some expression that means we have little hope.  But we only have ourselves to blame.

I spoke to Ma yesterday, and wee Tyler.  Oh - I found some of Tyler's socks last night.  Pink ones with a frilly top.  I'll mail them back.  They all seemed in good spirits when we chatted.  We meant to ring last night but got distracted when we picked up the phone and it rang!  It was Kara - in the mood for a good long chat.  So, Toby went to bed and that was that.  Maybe tonight.

Grocery delivery tonight.  Good.  I can make dinner!

Have a great day!
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Tues, Jan 26

Hi,

Happy Australia Day to those on the other side of the Tasman.  Hope it isn't too hot for you.  Heheheheh.  We were not bothered by a lot of heat for our long weekend celebrating Wellington Anniversary day.  Rain on Saturday that was constant.  Lovely on Sunday for the most part.  And overcast yesterday - but no rain!  Mixed bag.

Let's see how it went...  Friday we thought we'd pack and leave.  The rain had other ideas.  So we put it off to Saturday morning.  We woke and packed and remembered to ask Vivienne to sort out Merlot's food (Ta!!) having to buy the catfood on the way out of Wellington and drop it off at Vivienne's place.  Oh dear.  A disoriganised portion of our weekend.

We had a new tent to try out, you see.  A Torpedo7.com special.  And Saturday tested its seams very well.  It rained nearly the whole day - apart from the 15 minutes where we pitched it at Kaitoke Regional Park.  For anniversary weekend it was a very empty park.  I can imagine it heaving on warm, sunny holiday weekends.  So we pitched the tent, got in - and stayed in.  I ...  fell asleep.  Heheheheh.  Mike and Toby continued reading and playing games until hunger pains crept in.  Then we went exploring and Mike drove back into Upper Hutt for some Indian yummy takeways.  What a scrumptious camping dinner!

Next morning we slowly got ready and eventually some other punters arrived.  Constanze, Christian and Gustav (2) arrived followed by Nick, Marg, Iona (4) and Charlie (also 2).  So we pitched more tents, had lunch and then set off to see where Rivendell was filmed for Lord of the Rings.  I must watch those scenes again.  Kaitoke Regional Park

We went down to the river (where Pakuratahi River meets the Hutt River) junction and Toby saw a huge rock out in the middle of the river.  He decided to swim over to it.  So he stripped off, got upstream of the rock so he could use the fairly fast current to his advantage and leapt in.  The current grabbed him pretty quick but he got a hold of the rock and hauled himself up onto it.  He loudly proclaimed it Toby Island and sat in the sun on it for a while.  I must try and get a photo for you to see for yourselves.  We had to lure him off Toby Island with threats as he had virtually taken up residence.  He jumped in and swam strongly for the shore.  I was pretty proud of him.  I think Mike was too.

Off over the swingbridge after that for the loop walk.  We would have walked for 3 hours I guess, including breaks to watch Toby perform.  Toby managed to convince Iona that she didn't need to use her scooter that her parents had carried the whole way and rode her scooter back along the road to the campground.  Toby and Iona struck up a good friendship over the two days.

Monday was more overcast but still not too cold.  We decided to do the 3 hour Ridge Track to Te Marua lakes (the water treatment area for most of Wellington).  It took 4 hours (although I think Toby could have done it easily in 3.5 hours).  Mike had left a car at that end so it was easy to get back to the campground to strike the tent and head back to Wellington.

We ate pizza at Sally and Andrew's place on the way home.  It was nice to sleep in our bed.  The tent performed well and we'll use it as the tent of choice from now on (for campng out of the car - it is too heavy for tramping).  And Ramble can probably join us at Kaitoke Regional Park.  There were loads of dogs there - and even out on the trails where 1080 has been dropped.  So if we keep him close by in the campground, we should be right.

Time to get stuck in.
Have a great week.
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Fri, Jan 22

Hi,

Well, Mike was toast all day yesterday.  His diagnosis in the end was that he had a migraine during his sleep.  Seems to fit in with every symptom we saw.

I rode home and got in quite early so I made a quick tea and we watched another episode of True Blood before I had to shower for the movies.  We were off to see Avatar 3D again.  Mike gave his ticket up to Andrew, and Lesley and Wally and Joe all went.  It was just as much fun as the first time I saw it.  All of us loved it.  I spent ages looking at it this time rather than following the storyline and I remember being surprised it had finished.  Hayden (work colleague) is in one of the last scenes so I saw him and realised it was all over.

Mike seems much better today.  We went and collected Toby from Ngaio and said our goodbyes to Tyler and Mum and Dad.  Wee Toby is very sad Tyler is leaving.  He said it quite a few times on the drive back to Skids.  I had some tears in my eyes too.  I think I might be thinking of when my parents leave for good back to Australia.  We'll have to head over for a long weekend some time in May or something.  August is all on for Karen's big birthday party.  Woo hoo!

Karen also finished her series of four books last night.  I hope she likes the one I bought her.  We shall see.

This weekend we're off camping and doing day walks in Kaitoke (not far from Upper Hutt).  Mike is leading family day walks from there for the tramping club.  The weather is supposed to be pants!  We have a new tent to try out (Torpedo7.com special) so if nothing else we can eat and read all weekend and venture out during breaks in the weather.  Pop in to see us if you're going past.  Kaitoke Waterworks campground.

Have a great weekend.
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Thurs, Jan 21

Hi,

What a lovely morning.  It was so hot during the night we slept all night with just the sheet over us.  I know, I know.  Just 10 days ago I slept with the electric blanket on 2 all night too.  Weird, eh?  Heheheheh.  When I woke it was raining pathetically - I think the humidity was oozing out of the sky more than anything else.  Mike woke with a splitting headache and blocked sinuses and took medication and went back to bed.  Poor chap.  He couldn't even face breakfast.  Hands up all who know Mike and now realise how sick he is!  When Mike turns down food, he's ill.

Anyhow, there was little sign of Mike's impending doom last night.  He stayed late at work getting through stuff and I rode home and went to tea at Mum and Dad's place.  The kids had a good day at Lollipops but no one mention the zoo.  Shhhhhh.  Mum may have mentioned it once and got away with it.  ;-)  I ate a yummy dinner and then drove off to Tramping Club night, collecting Mike on the way through.

The slides were from Sue (vice prez) and from a kayaking trip she did to Pelorus Sound.  Very nice weather and looked like fun.

We drove home and fell into bed not long after that.

Tonight is another Avatar night with Lesley and Wally (and Joe from work).  I do hope Mike is well enough by then to come along.  Otherwise we'll be touting for someone to use his ticket.

Have a marvellous day.

Angela

Good morning on Wed, Jan 20

Hi,

What a lovely day yesterday - shame I was cooped up at work for the most part.  I did go for a walk to the shops at lunchtime though.  Today is warm but overcast.  24 C is forecast for today.  Wow.  I wonder if that will happen?

Last night we ate tea when we got in (well, I did hang out my washing first) and then got stuck into the moving of the TV downstairs.  We worked on it until 9pm but there is one thing left to do.  Mike needs to crawl into the roof and slice cables to extend down to the TV room.  We have no TV as yet.  Trouble is, we're busy every evening now till Friday.  Toby might still have no TV when he returns to our place.

I'm going home after work, grabbing the wee car and heading to Ngaio for dinner with everyone before I head off to the tramping club night at 7.30pm.  That way I can drive Mike home after it.  He will work late and sort out a few things before the club night.  First one for the year!

I wonder what the kids wll do with Ma and Pa today?  How exicting!  I hope the forecast evening rain stays away all day.  I have left zoo tickets (buy one get one free) on the fridge at home for them (and some Tyler stuff on the couch arm).  We also have TimeZone ticket/voucher thingys.  I guess they could do that today or tomorrow too.  I must find out where they can do it here.

Better go.  Busy day at work.

Love,
Angela

Good morning on Tues, Jan 19

Hi,

Yesterday afternoon's superb weather has continued into this morning with a cracker morning.  No wind and dry roads for our ride in.  After lunch yesterday the fog and drizzle lifted and we were greeted by sunshine.  The wind dropped away and the evening was wonderful.  We had tea at our place then dropped everyone off at Ngaio.  Ma and Dad's car is in the panelbeaters getting the two driver-side doors sorted after the run-in with our neighbour and so they needed our car.  We left the Corolla behind and drove the wee green car home - via Waikanae.  Yes - we went to visit the Tabors in their lovely new house.  Lots of fun.  The boys were already fast asleep but we got a tour of the house.

Anyhow, fun though it was, it made for a short sleep and it was hard getting out of bed this morning.  Never mind!

Yesterday the kids went to Skids and luckily the weather cleared up because it was "Get Wet Day" and Toby was armed with his two Super Soakers (one for him, one for Tyler).  They both had towels and togs but although Tyler carefully changed into her togs fror the fun, Toby must have launched straight into the fray.  The first thing Tyler told me when I saw her was "Toby got soaked".  They had fun!

Tonight however, is another thing.  We might flag dinner at Ma and Pa's house in favour of getting the house in order.  On Sunday night, Wally helped Mike move the television downstairs (into the TV room, naturally - about time the TV room got a TV in it - it's only been 2.5 years!).  So now we have to set it all up just so.  It'll probably take all evening.  Mike has to crawl into the roofspace and connect co-axial cables together to reach from the lounge down to the bottom TV room.  And that involves pre-laid drwawires that we hope will be up to the task!  At the moment we have no TV and my son seems to have taken this as a personal affront.  I think he is very happy to be at Grandy and Gramps' place this week so he can get his daily fix.  Tyler was horrified when I told her on Monday morning that we had no TV.  She said "Am I supposed to stay here with no TV?" or words to that effect.  Her face was incredulous.  I had to hold back guffaws at that point as she genuinely was surprised.

So, there you have it.  Ma has real estate agents coming around today.  The house should look its best on a day with sun and little wind!  They'll choose an agent and I expect marketing will begin.  When my parents return from Sydney (Sat. Feb. 6) they will kick off the selling process.

Have a wonderful day, wherever you are.

Love,
Angela

Good morning on Mon, Jan 18

Hi,

What a weird weekend of wacky weather here in Wellington.  Friday was wet, wet, wet and I went to collect the kids and Ma from Ngaio to head out to Queensgate with the intention of a glowworm tour in the botanic gardens afterwards.  But the dire weather put paid to all that.  Ma bought the kids shoes (very nice blck school shoes) and we went back home really.

Saturday morning dawned even worse on the weather front, and we hadn't even thought that was possible.  The southerly was bringing rain in sheets all day.  Wee Tom had his 4th birthday party in the Wadestown Plunket and his parents had a superbly organised event.  Great food for the adults as well as the kids.  The outdoor activities were curtailed but John did organise some gladiator events with blow up swords.  I think everyone had a good time despite the indoor nature of it all.

After the party we headed home to re-group after the fun and food and got ready for swimming.  We went to Karori pool and the kids swam by themselves with us hovering from afar.  The Karori pool is quite small and easy to keep an eye on them.  They had a ball and never had any problems.  Toby seems to have forgotten how to swim properly though.  Better take him again after Tyler heads off so we can practise his strokes.

Sunday was more of the same weather - but lighter rain.  Mike was busy all day with TradeMe buyers turning up to take things away and helping the Tabors move houses.  The kids and I donned jackets for a walk to the dairy but they really wanted a stay-at-home day.  Understandable given the weather!

Sunday evening Lesley and Wally turned up for dinner and we're trying to book Avatar 3D tickets with them.

That was about it really.  Mike was a machine all weekend and this morning.  He had to be at work by 7.30am this morning too so he was off early.  I dropped the kids off under a mist that was very thick.  It is supposed to be wet day at Skids (so Toby has his two super soakers and they both have togs) but I can't see them doing it unless the weather clears.  Which it might.  Tomorrow is supposed to be lovely.

Ok.  Better get stuck into work.  I need a break after getting two kids ready for Skids this morning.  Heheheheh.  Phew!  Toby seems to be a bit fragile (he has a snotty nose so he might be getting a cold) and Tyler has a cough every so often.  Tyler ate well - cornflakes and then two pieces of toast!  What a good girl.  Toby - not!  Some rice bubbles and that was it for him.  Never mind.

Love,
Angela

Our Christmas adventures - Part 1

Hi,

It's taking a while to recall our exciting activities over Christmas and New Years, so here is the first part I have dredged up from the recesses of my mind.  If I wait, you might never hear a thing about it.  I know how I work!

We spent Christmas Eve making the lunch items for Christmas Day. It all went very well with Ma going to get many of the fresh items during the morning. Mike and I slept in the lounge as my parents had our bed. I quite like the idea and even if my parents are enjoying a hot Christmas Day somewhere in Australia next year, I might suggest we sleep there again!

Mike's parents had arrived today and were entertained at Vivienne's before retiring to 40WLW for the Christmas festivities. I hope their Christmas Day routine includes a pilgrimage to Wellington from now on to spend the day with their family from now on. Fingers crossed, eh?
Christmas morning was an early start - Toby woke up at 5.30am and was so excited. Santa had left a stocking (Aunty Vivienne's trusty huge stocking) full of presents and he dragged them up to the lounge. He was so excited he was shaking. We placated him with one present but we wanted him to try and wait a little longer for his grandparents to wake up at a more decent hour. Trying to tempt Toby back to sleep did not work at all. Ma and Dad were up at 6am.
The present opening started in fury then. There was no stopping Toby. We must have all been a bit sleepy as several presents were opened by the wrong people. Oops. Santa seemed a little out-of-touch with Toby's wants and desires, but his parents and grandparents seemed to have hit the mark. Toby was gracious in any case. Opening yet another figure of Swampfire from Ben 10 Alien Force Toby merely said "Oh, another Swampfire, good!". Santa will try not to make similar mistakes next Christmas.

The breakfast started in earnest not too long after the present-opening started to slow down. There was loads of food and the prospect looming of more food later on At Sally and Andrew's place. Bring it on! We eventually got sorted, stacked ourselves in the car with the food we had prepared and made it (a little late) to 40WLW. This is where we discovered that the items we made were the first course. Bother. Perhaps we should have got here a little earlier in that case. The weather was lovely and the BBQ was soon roaring cooking the chicken skewers. People tucked into the prawn/watermelon skewers (soaked in juice, fish sauce, chillies and tamarind - fiddly but tasty). Then it was on to bigger things topped off by a dessert extravaganza!

Dad had to work on Boxing Day so we didn't have a very late night. We got home after dropping off Ma and Dad and realised we had copped a bit of sunburn from the ferocious sun. Dad had some colour too. Mike and Toby seemed to have escaped anything.

Boxing Day was a quieter day. This is blog-speak for "I can't recall what I did on that day". If anyone wants to enlighten me, please feel free. I rather suspect the day was spent playing with new toys, for both children and adults. That's my take on the black hole in my memory that signifies Boxing Day. Oh. Wait! The inane babble has meant a thought has bubbled to the top of my mind and something is tugging at my neurons. Mike was told by Dad of a LCD TV special on at work and so Mike drove in super early and bought a new Sharp LCD TV and proceeded to install it in our wardrobe. It worked an absolute treat. Mike was amazed to measure the new TV and find it was way bigger than the one on our lounge. He's seriously contemplating upgrading that one too! Heheheheh.

Sunday passed with me and Toby counting down the hours to the arrival of the Kittos. We went to visit the Sampsons to say a hello and gave them two Camelbaks (different brand, same idea) for their Christmas. They do a lot of orienteering so I think the hydration packs will be well used by them all. And on the Easter Rail Trail too! The Sampsons got a Wii for Christmas so we spent a lot of time playing on there. Great fun!

Monday arrived and we were all excited by the coming arrival of Kittos. Oooooo. I had to deliver Dad's phone to him at work and Mike and Toby drove to the airport to meet and greet. By the time I got there they were all out in the car park with their luggage waiting for the car. We drove to our place and sorted out luggage as the kids were staying with us and Karen and Scott were house-sitting Andy's house near the Wadestown shops.

Tuesday it was a little damp but the kids decided to play at Toby's school. Mike took Toby and Tyler walking and Abby and I hopped in the car and caught them. I dropped off Abby and went on to collect Karen and Scott. Then we collected the kids and went into Te Papa for lunch. Mike and Scott arrived later in the wee green car. Fortunately for me as I had no coins for the parking machine!

Te Papa was great fun. The kids really enjoyed the lunch and the cave. Wee Abby had to pluck up courage to disappear into a black hole but once she did it, she was hooning through the cave with the others. They also enjoyed the 3D colossal squid movie and Abby created some electronic colossal squids (Toby made about his 20th version - he loves it!). The Earthquake House simulation was funny. Abby was nervous after all our hype and wanted to hold my hand. But once it started she let go and said it was scary in a very loud voice.

After Te Papa we visited Ma and Pa and sang Singstar for ages. Abba's Mamma Mia was a huge hit with Tyler and Abby and we heard little else for quite some time. Then it was home to bed. We were off the next day on the ferry.

At 8am the next morning as Mike was driving around sorting out stuff for the trip away, the Interislander people rang him asking where we were for our 8.30am sailing. Oh dear. Someone had said we were on the 6pm sailing and none of us double-checked. I think at one stage that sailing had been considered - hence the confusion. But the Interislander people quickly re-booked us on their 6.30pm sailing that evening. What great service!

So we got ready, filled in the day with stuff and headed to the ferry ready for the next step in our holiday adventures.

To be continued...

Good morning on Fri, Jan 15

Hi,

Well, Mike and I got up and showered and changed into our bike gear.  Mike had proclaimed it suitable riding conditions.  But as I munched my toast and stared out the window, Mt KauKau disappeared in a drizzly squall from the south.  So I suggested we change and take the bus.  Mike mentioned (often) how soft I was but he seemed quite happy to get changed if you ask my opinion.

Last night was fun.  I left work with Fran (colleague) and we met Vivienne and went to see The Lovely Bones.  I was a bit unsure about how depressing it might be, but I think Peter Jackson did a great job (not having read the book, I can't be definitive about that, but I suspect it was handled well in film) because it could have been heavy-handed on the violence and that would have been quite sickening.  The imagery was well done and probably a good interpretation of the book's descriptions.

After the movie, Fran went home and Vivienne and I went out for dinner to Monsoon Poon.  Mike joined us.  I have to say I didn't enjoy it quite as much as last time I was there.  The food was a little sweet for my liking (I did order a plum sauce dish so I only have myself to blame).

We dropped Vivienne off and I crashed into bed.  Mike, however, heard the call of the Internet and surfed for a few hours.  This morning I feel fine and Mike is a walking zombie (that is a Gilbertism).

Toby and Tyler are off to Skids today (I assume).  Shame about the weather as they have a field trip to an outdoor destination (Zealandia at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary - lucky things).  I wonder if it will go ahead.

We will collect the kids from Wadestown Skids after work and I'll drive to Ngaio to collect Ma and we'll go to Queensgate for shopping and dinner.  Mike will drive to Kaitoke for a tramp in the rain (a recce for anniversary weekend where he is leading a family trip there).  I rather suspect we won't be walking in the botanic gardens afterwards looking at glow-worms.

That's about it.  Looking for forward to seeing the kids this evening.

Love,
Angela

Good morning on Thurs, Jan 14

Hi,

What a lovely morning here in Wellington - the sun is shining, the sky is trying to be blue and the wind is non-existent.  Mike and I enjoyed the ride in - long may it last!  Well, NIWA has sent out a report to confirm my suspicions of the weather patterns being disrupted.  They chose to call it "see-sawing temperatures" but I know they really mean the weather is completely toast.  So, I think the weather will turn to garbage by tomorrow and be on the way down into the pit of despair of the see-sawing motion.  The pit itself looks like being Saturday.  Not good as that is wee Tom's birthday party and we want to set up the bouncy castle.  Oops.  The bouncy castle may be an underwater event!

I'm off to see The Lovely Bones this evening (Vivienne, are you free - Sally, are you free?) at 4.45pm at Reading, Courtney Place.  Lucky I got in early so I can leave early.

I'm also going to see Ma and the kids (and maybe Sally too) at lunchtime today.  We're off to Clark's in the library and then Frank Kitts park.  Cool!

That's about it for today.  Busy at work once more.  You get that.  Have fun wherever you are.

Love,
Angela

Good morning on Wed, Jan 13

Hi,

So nice to finally ride in after the Christmas break.  It was a great ride too as the roads were perfectly dry.  Mike said it was a wake up ride after being soft for so many weeks.  So, we're riding home a longer way this evening.

Last night we bought our very own window washer (and house weatherboard washer) and Mike tried it out as soon as we got home.  We're very excited.  Weird, eh?

However, last night we went out for dinner with Christine, John and Tom.  Tom's first question was "Where's Toby?".  Yep.  To Tom we're boring without Toby.  We went to the Mongolian BBQ place down near the Embassy cinema.  A good place for kids.

Then home to try out the window washer and watch some TV before bed.  Not too shabby a day.

The kids are off to Skids holiday programme today.  It is a scavenger hunt day so I thought they'd like it.  I'll report back on it once I know.

Friday we're going shopping to get Tyler some school shoes (and check if Toby needs them too) and perhaps walk in the botanic gardens on the way home.  The glow-worms will be out and I'd love to show Tyler them!

Ok.  Time to kick start the day.  And I need to start a note about the Christmas adventures before I forget them all.  Heheheheh.

Have a great day!
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Tues, Jan 12

Hi,

Mike and I had a nice evening yesterday.  We peered intently at a house on Sefton St that was a reference house for the architects we have chosen.  It was from afar though - the other side of a valley.  I'll have to go back with my telephoto lens.  Heheheheh.  We bumped into John, Christine and wee Tom while we were skulking around that part of Wadestown.  So we got to chat for a wee while.

Then we were off to dinner and see Avatar in 3D.  The almost-3-hour movie went in a flash and I'd have hardly known the time had past if it wasn't for our third row seat and my sore neck towards the end.  We both enjoyed the move a lot.  We also spotted Hayden (our work colleague with a crowd part) twice!  We're thinking of going again just for the sheer joy of the experience.  The crowd was really keyed up for it too.  Very funny.

Not much else happening.  We took the bus in as it poured with rain when we woke up.  We're so soft.

The kids are off to Skids tomorrow for the Scavenger Hunt day because we made a mistake with their booking yesterday.  Oops.  They get dropped off at Wadestown school between 8 and 9am and then someone takes them to the Newlands school to join their programme.  We just need to find out when they get dropped back.

I'd like to pop to Ngaio after work for dinner tonight.  But Mike might not.  He might have a window mop on his mind.  :-)  We'll see.

Have a great day, wherever you are.
Love,
Angela

Good morning on Mon, Jan 11

Hi,

What a shock to the system.  I have been counting down the days to when I had to go back to work with dread.  And yet, now that I am here, it is all back to normal routine already.  How weird is that?

Our weather has gone manic.  Yesterday was extremely unusual with dark clouds, driving sheets of rain and lots of wind.  Completely wrong for this time of year.  I think the El Nino/La Nina patterns have been disrupted and science will slowly catch up with my theory.  Stay tuned for a breaking report from NIWA after they realise I am right.   Friends here have said they know loads of people that are contemplating moving to Auckland as the weather has gone mad.  But it'll settle back to normal eventually I am sure.  Roll on the stable Feb weather!

This is not going to be the summary of our great Christmas/New Year holiday as it would take too much time right now.  So I'll compose the massive missive at my leisure and  update you all later.

The kids are with Ma today as we botched up the holiday programme information and Dad didn't drop them off at an empty school.  Toby and Tyler probably wouldn't like that much.  We'll sort out the location and see if they can go on Wednesday instead.

Tonight Mike and I are off to see Avatar in 3D.  We can't wait.

I hope you all have a great day!
Love,
Angela
