The weekend with saying goodbyes and going to Blenheim

Hi,

What a crazy good weekend.  Friday night saw me and Mike meeting Jo and Momo at Capitol for dinner.  It is one of my favourite places and it didn't fail me this time either.  I had asparagus as an entree and risotto primavera as a main (small) and then their wonderful soft centred chocolate pudding.  Mmmmm.

Pondering Capitol's menu

We went out to Goldings for drinks and met up with a whole bunch of people.  Vanessa came back from Wow to chill with us too.  Jase got in after his work and we all enjoyed a chat and some drinks.  The pub actually closed around us and chucked us out.  It has been a long time since that happened to me.  I seem to recall a time with Karen in some pub in the middle of nowhere.

We took Vanessa home and entered the land of fog when we breached the heady heights of Newlands.  But all good and we were home and in bed by 1am!  Wait, what???  Sigh.

Bresolin iced coffee
Next morning we were up early and headed in for a big brunch leaving celebration with Momo and Jo.  And all their friends.  Woot!  I had some yummy eggplant thing in a tomato sauce that had eggs poached in it.  With haloumi.

Bresolin!

I caught an Uber to the airport at 11.15am and checked into my SoundsAir flight super easy.  Got on at 12:05 and had a lovely flight across to Blenheim.  Landed at 12.35pm and met Col and Iona and went back to their place to chill.

In Marlborough!
Iona and I rode bikes over to the Mega Mitre10 and bought some cord to re-thread Iona's Roman blind.  That was a pleasant excursion and I got used to her two bikes.  She must be a bit taller than me as the seat height was just a little too high.  After we got back we adjusted her commuter bike to suit me for the big bike ride on Sunday.

I may have snoozed a bit on the floor with the television on. Then it was dinner time.  Stir fry with noodles.   And I wasn't too long out of bed.

Sunday I was up early (not quite as early as Col - she knocked on my door and I could not drag myself out of bed for another 20 mins!) to watch the All Blacks versus Springboks in Lotus Stadium in SA.  What a game!  I was sure NZ was going to get hammered at one point and lose by a massive margin.  But they clawed back a win in the last 5 minutes.  Scored two tries.  Wow!

Iced coffee @ Seabreeze Cafe in Picton

Then Iona and I were off on our bikes.  We got away at 8am.  Rode down SH62 to SH6 to Havelock.  Up the road from there to Picton (along Queen Charlotte Drive).  Had a lovely stop in Picton (iced coffee - solid 7) and then the last wee push to Blenheim down SH1.

I forgot to put sunscreen on so my nose is a little bright now.  Hahah.  We got home around 2:30pm.  Such a good time.  I may have also had a snooze in a patch of sunshine that afternoon too.  When I woke, it was time for tea!  Tacos with quorn.  Mmmm.

Into bed fairly early and up at 5.15 to have toast with Iona while Col walked Frida.  Iona dropped me at the airport at 5.55am and we chatted before she headed away to start her working week.

My commute to work was stunning!

My morning commute on Monday
At work and happy with the bike ride.  Well, happy I did one.  Pretty sure I should have done heaps better.

Let's see how many more I can fit into my remaining training regime.

Have a wonderful week.

Angela

The weekend in Nelson

Hi,

What a fantastic weekend - thank you to everyone that made it super special.  We tried to get to bed early on Friday night - but given we still had to pack for the weekend, that was easier said than done.  But eventually we did get to bed.  I woke at 1.10am and jumped in the shower.  Probably a good thing to do as it did at least wake me up a bit.  Mike and Toby got up a little later and threw on the clothes.  Then we finished packing the car.  We were in the InterIslander carpark collecting Sally and Andrew by 2.30am before joining the car queue.

We were entertained by securing the bikes better (we had 5 of them - two on the roof and three on the back) and the wee truck units that moved the truck containers onto the ferry.  We got on nice and early and found some reclining seats.  Toby grabbed the blanket and went to sleep immediately.  Sally and Andrew did the same.  Mike worked for a bit and I fell asleep eventually.

Sleeping on the ferry at 3am

When I woke up, it was just me and Toby there.  Turns out Andrew had found the brekkie and tried that.  Sally had found the coffee, and wanted more (but not the coffee available here) and Mike was off exploring.

Morning coffee at Chez Alicouscous

Met Iona off the ferry at the self service petrol station and Andrew switched to her car.  We went back to Blenheim and had coffee at Vicky and Alistair's place.  The coffee was superb.  And we got heated croissants too.

Perfection

And with croissant, no less!

Mike enjoying the brekkie on the porch

Car loaded with 5 people and 5 bikes

Porch catch up

That is just perfect

Sally had a crisis at work, so she ended up getting sucked into that for a bit.  Andrew left with Iona, as Iona had a lunch date with her friends Sue and Jan in Motueka with the idea he would get dropped off at the Nelson accommodation.  We left about 30 - 40 mins afterwards and enjoyed a good drive over the hills.

Vineyards

Sally and Andrew stayed at the Beachside Villa motel on Golf Road - they had the benefit of air conditioning.  We dropped Sally off with gear and headed back to our accommodation.  Unfortunately at 12pm we were still too early to get a key.  We dropped our bikes off and met Sally and Andrew at Sprig and Fern for a lovely lunch.  Mike and Toby went to Maccas instead.  Hahah.

Got into our room by 1.30pm or so and had a bit of a lazy snooze until 5pm.  Our room was a basic cabin for $80 a night.  A bunk bed and a single bed.  Mike and I shared the bottom single bunk bed.  Toby grabbed the single bed.  The room was tiny - with a fridge.  Nothing else.  Not even a fan.

Locked the bikes up outside our room and then collected Andrew and Sally from their place before meeting JR and Anita at Hopgoods in Trafalgar St, just below the cathedral.  This was possibly the best meal I have had in ages.  We had a set menu, but the staff swapped out my meal for vegetarian options.  And they were not an afterthought at all.  Every course was scrumptious.  And I had two Shirley Temple Sour Cherry drinks.  Mmmmm.  Definitely going back there.

The weather was so hot - such a beautiful evening for sitting out and dining alfresco.  Along with a lot of other people at that end of the street in the middle of town.  We got home and retired to bed.  It was stifling in our room though.  At one point I tried to convince the boys to sleep with the door wide open.  I didn't get my way.  There was barely any breeze anyway so I doubt it would have made an iota of difference.

Andrew starting from Flora car park

I was up early Sunday morning - 5.45am - and jumped in the shower.  Nice showers here.  Went to pick up Andrew at 6.30am and after getting petrol from the Z in Richmond and a pie for brekkie (vegetable korma for me - it was ok) we set off for Flora car park below Mt Arthur.  The chap in the petrol station kept trying to declare Andrew's bacon and egg pie as a butter chicken one.  We knew why once we started eating in the car.  It was a butter chicken one.  We got there just on 8am and Andrew was quickly onto his bike and off.

As I was saying goodbye to Andrew, I was leaping around like a mad thing due to the inquisitive bumble bees that were attracted to my blue shoes.  They also liked Andrew's blue backpack, so my goodbye hug for him was very lukewarm - no way was I getting much closer to him than that.    Andrew suggested I go for a walk, and after a wee toilet stop (also bombarded by bumble bees and wasps in there) I decided to head up the Mt Arthur Hut for a while.

Best idea ever!

My walk up on the Mt Arthur hut track

Selfie #1
I walked for an hour - and the weather was beautiful.  The view up to the hut was stunning and now I am desperate to get back and do some proper tramping here.  I saw a weka, piwakawakas, robins and rifleman pairs.  Absolutely beautiful.  I maybe got halfway up to the hut.  The DoC sign said it was 1 hour 15 to the hut, but I only had an hour before I needed to leave and get back to Motueka to meet Iona at 10am.  And I was out of cellphone reception so I couldn't juggle the time for that.

Selfie #2
I took a few selfies with a makeshift twig tripod.  Hahah.

Selfie #3
I left the Flora carpark at 9.15am and drove back down the scary hill.  I met 3 cars coming up, but at easy times to pass.  Three more back down on the flat part.  I was in Motueka by 10.05am.  I met Iona and Jan (and Jan's dog Diesel) and checked out the market and had an iced coffee.

Motueka iced coffee with Diesel

We popped back into Sue and Jan's house before I got the pick up call from Andrew at 11.30am.  He'd got a puncture and was walking the last km out.  So I drove up Takaka hill and met him about 40 mins later as he was just starting the climb up from the other side.

Went to Neudorf and met the others just getting there from cycling from Mapua.  Perfect timing.  Toby joed out on the grass and Anita prepared a fantastic picnic.  We met a couple also riding - Warwick and Karen.  They live on the Gold Coast and Warwick divides his time between there and Nelson.  Sounds perfect to me.

Toby tuckered out at Neudorf after his bike ride

Neudorf - stunning

Andrew and I got away before the others to meet Iona in Nelson and ensure she didn't shoot through to Blenheim.  We got fish n chips from Haven chippie and ate at Tahunanui beach.

Appleby's coffee ice cream - yum!

The ice cream cart there was the best!  I could not keep up with the melting ice cream though.  I ended up very sticky and Karen (my sister) will know what I kept thinking about.  Highpoint West shopping centre - the great ice cream incident of (about) 1988.

Back to the accommodation and Mike and Toby convinced me to go see Jumanji at the cinema.  They used emotional blackmail.  "We hardly saw you today".  "Don't you want to be with us?".

But - it transpired that I loved the movie.  Something tickled my funnybone and I laughed till tears tracked down my face.  The credits had a Michael Gilbert as some VFX person.  So - glad I went in the end!

Best brekkie in ages - at DeVille in New St, Nelson

We woke up after another hot night - but not quite as warm as the previous night.  Packed up and checked out and collected Sally and Andrew from their place and loaded their gear.  We met JR in town at DeVille in New St.  Best brekkie ever!  I loved that place.

Iced espresso - very good

Me with the iced coffee and the iced espresso - for research purposes

Left there in drizzly rain, checked out some suburbs on the way to Blenheim.  Ate lunch at Saint Clair.  Very nice.  Off to Picton and wandered around for a few hours.

Picton pedestrian bridge

Large stingray in the harbour

Boarded the ferry at 6pm and away back to Wellington for a clam crossing.  Dropped Sally and Andrew home at 10.30pm and back to our place not long after 11pm.

Wee Smudge was happy to see us - Ange must have looked after her well.  Didn't unpack much before falling into bed.

Woot!  Awesome weekend.  Time for the short week at work to kick in.

Have a great week.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with my birthday weekend with Aidan

Hi,

My week had been very tough and I'd texted Aidan to say as much. She replied on Friday to say the next twenty four hours would improve the situation entirely. I agreed because the weekend was approaching.

Mike and Josh were planning to go tramping and I had a weekend planned with Toby. It did include a pedicure appointment too, which Toby was going to attend and tolerate before fun and games started.
Our Friday night was awesome. Benjamin came to look after Toby and we went out to dinner with work and then an improvisation comedy routine at Bats theatre. I laughed so much. It was great. The accents attempted were hilariously dreadful.

Back home and I dropped Benjamin home before getting to bed and reading lots. I fell asleep at midnight. My book was so good. The sparrow. A great science fiction novel. Fantastic. Recommended by Aidan because she started it and got spooked. She wanted to know about it.

Up early to get ready for my 9 a.m. appointment. Mike was up to finish his tramping preparations. Mike kindly went to get croissants for breakfast. Yum. I waited patiently. When he got back he said he wouldn't start until Toby got up. So I eventually complained to Toby so much he got up.

Toby was up and I got a text from Aidan saying the good things were about to start. I was amazed she knew I was about to eat croissants. What I didn't know was she was about to knock on the front door.
The knock came and I knew Josh was there to collect Mike. I heard him say hello. Then as I stepped into the hallway to see him, Aidan was there. Cool! As I opened my mouth to say hello she said "happy birthday". This barely registered as it was late June and nowhere near my birthday. But her next sentence was "we're off to Picton, get packed". Whereupon my mouth fell open and I stared at her in surprise and astonishment.

Aidan's texts to me, trying to cheer me up without telling me that she was whisking me away to Picton

But the tramping? My appointment? Plans? What?

Everyone knew and had cancelled my appointment. There never was any tramping plans. The packed backpack at the front door and Mike's tramping clothes were all a ruse.

Aidan and Josh had tea while I packed for the weekend. I was ready pretty fast. Pyjamas. Toothbrush. Change of clothes. Then we went to have breakfast at Drexels. Great way to start any weekend. Love breakfasts out.
Then we got dropped at the Interislander ferry. Aidan and I sat in the departure area for a while before boarding. We got two seats looking out the front and starboard side. Settled in for the glorious crossing. No clouds. Slight southerly swell. The harbour was stunning.
Wellington harbour looking as fine as I have ever seen it

Iced coffee at Le Cafe - Aidan's favourite cafe
Aidan took loads of photos from the ferry. Apart from in the strait where all you see is water. We chatted to three men, two on motorcycles and one American tourist from Chicago. The tourist was a bit hapless. He'd looked at the map of the world, seen how tiny the islands were here and decided he could see everything in 6 days. Ha ha.  Good luck with that itinerary, buddy.  He was heading to Christchurch to see the South Island.  Not sure any of us there rated seeing Christchurch as a taster of the entirety of the South Island.  And we said as much.  Aidan recommended Kaikoura.  I concurred.  Or if he went to Chch, he could take the trans alpine train over the alps.  That would be a good excursion.  But wandering around Chch?  Not so much.

Aidan got me a cup of tea at one point. She asked if I wanted rooibos as she got up. The South African motorcyclist was impressed an American was asking a New Zealander if she wanted a rooibos.  I think Aidan made his day right there!

Getting off in Picton, we walked straight to the cafe Aidan loves. Le Cafe on the Picton waterfront. I had an iced coffee and Aidan had French onion soup. We shared a walnut tart. Off to the bed and breakfast to check in.  We met the owners and they were super friendly.  We got settled in the room.

Feet in the Band B bedroom
I read for a bit before we ventured out. Aidan had shopping in mind but never found what she was after. Apart from a hard copy of Dune. She's got great taste in books.  She did find herself a new hat.  Her old one reminded her of a souffle on her head - according to her.  Not that I thought it looked silly when I saw it.  But this one did look especially nice, so she's done well.

Wish my legs were this long - I could ride the motorbike I really want, if they were

Feet shot
I tried out my new walking shoes.  I bought them for Nepal.  They worked well.  Super grippy.  I made up that word, didn't I?  But they went through mud easily.  I was so stable.  Hahah.

Walk to Bobs Bay

Oops - hit the button again by mistake and took an inadvertent selfie
Selfie at Bobs Bay looking south (and yes, I am watching my fingers try to hit the button)

We decided to do the walk to Bobs Bay. Thirty minutes there and thirty back. The sun was almost gone. We got a great walk in. Never have two people been so pleased to find a toilet at the destination though. Made the walk back a far better prospect.

Back to the accommodation to change shoes then off to dinner at Le Cafe. I had the steak and Aidan had the lamb. Both scrumptious. We left to head to her favourite Irish pub for dessert but they had none. Aidan chewed her way through a Guinness though. We did days and days of the Stuff quiz.  Pretty consistent result.  Usually around 12 out of 15.  Where did Aidan get her knowledge of painters?  She'd see a painting and know who did it.  Freaky talent.  Show me the periodic table and I could tell you the elements.  So, we had art and science covered.  Cool team!

Slurp.  Or is drinking a Guinness more like eating?
Back to the accommodation and bed. I managed to read for only twenty minutes before realising I was half asleep already. Turned out the light, as did Aidan. Asleep in seconds.

Aidan got up at 2 a.m. to check out the facilities. As you do. But this woke me up, unaccustomed as I am to people wandering around in the middle of the night. It took me a wee while to fall back to sleep.  Nice and quiet in Picton in the dead of night.

Felt great Sunday morning when I woke up so the hour lying in bed at 2am wasn't deterimental. The day was incredible. No wind. No clouds.  Frost everywhere.  Aidan made tea in our room and eventually I tried the shower out. I went downstairs to wait for Aidan at breakfast. She came down and gingerly sat at the breakfast table. Turns out she'd just lain her clothes on the bed, bending over slightly, and her back spasmed and now she was super sore. Oh no.

Breakfast.  Aidan was cold.

I got her some fruit and yogurt to start. We chatted to the owners. We got scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Yum. Back upstairs to clean teeth and walk to the ferry. I carried Aidan's bag as she slowly negotiated the terrain between the B and B and the ferry terminal.

Walking to the ferry

As we waited in departures, she lay on the carpet. Not good. She took pain relief and sea sickness tablets. The things she does for a weekend with me. I'm very appreciative. But for her this is way better than flying anywhere. Which she hates with a passion. Well, she could have done without the back complaint, I guess.

We got a wee sofa to herself so she could lie down. We read most of the way back. Interrupted by tea trips and hot chips trips to the food court.

Stretching the back out on the ferry
Another wonderful crossing. Calm. The time passed quickly. Josh met us at the other end and I got dropped off home.

The boys were pleased to see me. Mike went into work to get stuff done. I watched a movie with Toby. We ate Indian takeaways. Yum.

Off to bed. Slept like a log really. Listened to podcasts as we got into bed. Never heard hardly any of them. Fell asleep in seconds I think. I'll have to listen to them all again.

I loved my surprise weekend. It was incredible. Aidan did so well. Mike and Josh ran a smooth operation. Toby knew and never said anything. His instructions were to run interference if I planned anything elaborate with him.
Yep. Astonished. And just what I needed after my week. I'll remember it for a long time. We had the best weather. And I had the best company anyone could ask for. Perfect. Shame Aidan's memory of the weekend will have back pain associated with it.

It was also my mother's birthday yesterday. I hope she gets my present today. Fingers crossed.

July isn't far away. School holidays start next week. For three weeks. Still trying to plan those. I have the last week off. I might take Toby to the lodge for skiing.

Have a fantastic week ahead. Hope your weekend was as good as mine. But it can't have been. As my weekend was the best.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with my first cycle tour

Hi,

Wow - just wow!  What a great weekend.  We got the 8pm ferry, which, as stated when you bought the tickets, has little in the way of services.  So holding out for dinner on the 8pm ferry is not the right idea.  I had the absolute worst sausage roll I have ever seen, let alone eaten.  But I was hungry.  Andrew had the last pie. Guess the flavour?  Kumara and cashew!  Yep - I know!  That's not a pie!  That's an abomination!

Anyhow, I fell asleep curled up on a seat lying over my pannier.  We were the only two bikes on board and lashed them together over the top of the pathetic bike stand.  We carried our gear up and strewed it all around us and dozed after the satisfying meal.  Or is that in spite of the less than satisfying meal?

Off the ferry and the excitement levels were high.  We rode past the waterfront at about 11.20pm.  I spied Le Cafe and discovered it was the cafe we have used the last few times we've been in Picton.  Cool.  Rode over the arched bridge through the marina and out into suburban Picton.  Soon we were outside the built up area in pitch blackness and hooning through the bays.  I'm sure they were pretty.  Couldn't see much.  Some houses looked spectacular.

I almost bowled a penguin (Little Blue - or Fairy for the Australian readers) sitting in the middle of the road.  Lucky for it there were no cars.  Seems like a silly thing to do if you ask me.  It was the same colour as the road and I braked hard and Andrew also had to as he was right behind me.  I yelped "Penguin" and Andrew noticed a blur on the road as we passed.

Soon at Whatamango Bay and pitched the tent, brushed my teeth under the brilliant Milky Way and fell asleep to the bird life all around.

Whatamango Bay - very pleasant spot

Up early enough to misty drizzle and ate my muesli.  It was yummy.  Hubbards toasted with no fruit.  Mmmmm.  Struck the tent, packed up and left after circling the campsite to check it out.

Out of the campsite and the road immediately went up.  And up. And up.  Five kilometres of unrelenting up. I was down in the granny gear before too long and eventually, after about an hour, I was up.  Phew!  Good views!

Down the other side was fun.  The little bays and inlets were lovely.  Lots of hills and we ran out of seal pretty soon.  I found it tough riding up loose gravel on steep hills.

Cup of tea at Tom Canes Bay - very pleasant.

Shot of the bike computer showing kms.

Cup of tea?  It was welcome!

My bruise from netball on Friday afternoon looks good

More of the same for the afternoon.  I had to push up the hill out of Robin Hood Bay as the steep hills and gravel defeated me.  But I got back on at every opportunity!

Robin Hood Bay - historic whaling bay

Loving my bruise
We decided to ride all the way to Rarangi - the seal started again at White Bay.  We got a bit of rain for 5 minutes so we didn't stop.  Got to Rarangi and pitched the tent and it started hosing down!  Andrew cooked tea in the vestibule of the tent while I perhaps fell asleep.  Dinner was scrumptious.

Rarangi DoC campsite

Up early to strike the tent and off to Blenheim for breakfast at Figaros.  It was great - I had Eggs Benedict and a great cup of Rooibos tea.  Andrew had buttermilk pancakes with lashings of bacon and banana and maple syrup.
Blenheim Farmers market - these were the best!
Off to the Farmers market to check it out.  It was very, very nice.
Bruise developing nicely
Then along to Renwick, I went back via the shortcut road and Andrew rode along the Wairau river bank.  We met at Wairau Affray and had lunch.  Then we tackled the Picton hill.  I didn't realise it was not that steep - I was anticipating a devilish ride.  It was easy in comparison to the hills Andrew had me on the day before!  We rode 125 kilometres all up - but the 40km on loose gravel with steep hills was by far the hardest part.  The ride around Blenheim was indulgent really.  Now I know how easy that can be!  The off road, not so much!
On the road back to Picton

Picton and a really strong iced coffee at Le Cafe
A long afternoon spent sampling the delights of Le Cafe.  Andrew is converted to that cafe.  We watched a Herald Triumph lose its front wheel right in front of us.  It makes a loud noise when that happens.  The driver was doing a sharp u-turn and the wheel didn't turn.  Oops.

Onto the ferry and Mike met us at 10pm and took us home.  What an amazing weekend.  I'd like to do more!

Have a wonderful week!
Love,
Angela
