The weekend with weaving and cycling

Hi,

What a weekend.  Friday saw Mike and I at home by ourselves as Toby had a weekend with his mates.

Mike was very merry by the time I got home.  He turned into an octopus while we watched TV.  Hahahah.

Friday iced latte!

Up early to pack (made me stressed as I usually pack the night before and didn't!) for Palmerston North road trip and cycle ride.  Sally and Andrew collected me at 8am and we put my bike in the car and headed off.  Grabbed brekkie at Waikanae Bakery.

Got to Palmerston North well before 11am (more like 10.30am) and found Col with her friends at Moxies.  We chatted away before we all headed to Taylor Jensen Gallery for the opening ceremony of the weaving exhibition that Iona has been ramping up for over the past 6 weeks.

Saturday iced coffee @ Moxies

Weight of conviction

The exhibition was amazing.  The team had all made the most incredible items.  From a huge taniwha through to evening kete that wouldn't look out of place at the Opera House.  Beautiful clothing too.  Iona contributed her pieces and they really added to the exhibition by showing some of the practical aspects of weaving.

Kai time

Weaving goodness

Info - and feet!

Then we were away and got changed in the library toilets.  And headed off around 1pm from the middle of town.

Cycling fun
Up over the Pahiatua Track road.  The uphill made my knee twinge.  I wasn't too happy about that and I was conscious of it for the rest of the ride.  But what a gorgeous route.  We climbed up to meet Sally at the summit, then barreled down the hill into Pahiatua.

Met Sally off and on as we headed out of Pahiatua in towards Route 52 area (back blocks between Pahiatua and Eketahuna).  Lovely riding.

Bike ride from Palmerston North to the middle of nowhere

Got to an intersection that headed towards Eketahuna and I called it quits for the day.  60km.  3 hours.  Meh.  But the riding was superb.

Andrew rode into Eketahuna to meet me and Sally as we waited in the car there.  Then we drove like the wind to Lower Hutt for a quick clothes change and then to our place for the same for me.

We drove into town and went to see Terminator:  Dark Fate.  I loved it!  Awesome movie.  Sally and Andrew dropped us home.

Lazy Sunday for me.  I had a headache.  Boo!  But Mike got heaps done.  Focus is going.  DRZ is going.  Garden got a blitz.

Sunday lunch

Up early Monday for my walk in.  Gorgeous morning.

Did boxing in the PT session.  So hard.  Such fun!

And the week looms large.

Have a good one.

The weekend in Palmerston North for a house colling

Hi,

What a lovely weekend - but as my shorts didn't have a pocket, I never had my phone with me almost the entire weekend.  And hence, there are next to no photos.  Doh!

Santa spin

Friday lunch time was hot Santa spin - and that's because the instructor got hot while spinning in a Santa costume.  Not for any other reason.

Iced latte fun

I did get away for a coffee catch up with someone from work - he can't make the team lunch this week.  Machete - such a good iced coffee.

Anyway, Toby and I had a burger in the park on Friday evening, waiting for Mike to get home.  He actually ordered the burgers and made us walk down to collect them, with the idea that he would get back in time to join us.  Nope.  We were well home by the time Mike got back.

Next morning we were up and packing for our weekend.  Mike had a tramp planned so stayed at home.  Toby and I drove to Sally and Andrew's place then followed them to Paekakariki for brekkie at the Perching Parrot.  Good food (no iced coffee).  Next stop - Palmerston North.  Toby and I checked into the Copthorne and dropped our bags off before collecting Sally and Andrew from their accommodation and picking up a few things from the supermarket.  As we checked in, the chap said they had upgraded our room for us.  "Thank you", I said.

As we opened the room, I realised by upgrade they meant "you no longer have twin beds, but a giant king sized bed and I hope you and your teenage son enjoy sharing that".  Toby didn't care, and neither did I.  But - how weird.

Off to the house cooling party.  It was perfect weather and lots of people came and went.  The food was yummy and I chatted to loads of people.  It was also the first time I had seen Andrew's parents since Helen's hip op.  I have been remiss.

I dropped Toby back at our room around 7pm and returned to the party.  Eventually it was time to leave Iona and Col to it.  Iona was on an early ferry back to Blenheim and was looking at a very short sleep by that stage.

Joes Garage iced coffee in Palmerston North

I got back to our room at 10pm and I was seriously asleep in seconds, despite the movie being on that Toby watched.  And the king sized bed was so huge, I don't think anything Toby did had any impact on my sleep.  He told me there was a drunken fight outside our window during the night and he got up to watch it.  I never heard a thing!

Off to Joe's Garage for brekkie the next morning and Col joined us.  Then Toby and I did a bit of shopping before driving back home.

Relaxed at home, making sure the washing machine was kept busy, and then Mike and I popped out for tea and drinks at the Rogue and Vagabond with Jo and Momo.  Nice way to end the weekend.

Just for some variety, it rained overnight.  How weird.

Short week for us.  We're off to Australia this Friday.  Christmas is coming!

Love,
Angela

The weekend with mega tramping fun

Hi,

What an incredible weekend.  My body has been pushed to its limit (well, maybe almost).  And I feel so good for it all.

If you want to read Andrew's version of the tramp, it is here:  Arawaru

Friday after work, we had some Gilbert logistics involving dropping Mike's gear at the train station for his van trip up to the mountain.  From there, Andrew and I drove out to collect Andrew's gear from Sally and his place.  Sally arrived as we were almost ready to head away.  She got Smudge's fancy feast cans safely.  :-)

Andrew and I made good time - we left his place at about 6.15pm.  I may be making that up.  But between 6 and 6.30 I think.  And there was no traffic.  Weird.  Ate a pie at the BP at Otaki.  And we were chatting to Iona just after 8pm.

Up super early at 5.20am to get ready for the day.  Ate some toast with peanut butter and a nice Rooibos.  Iona got up to eat with us.  By 6.40am we were off.  Twenty minutes to the road end.  We were off walking by 7.10am - up the Sledge Track.

New gaiters in pristine condition before the huge tramp

I had my trail running shoes on, with tramping socks and my new gaiters.  Had my tramping pants on, and two layers of merino, my cap and my jacket.  I carried extra layers, leggings and snacks and water (1.5 L) in my Camelbak backpack.  Andrew had first aid and a PLB as well as survival pack.

The first hour was a flat (mostly) track to a new swing bridge - part of Te Araroa.  The bridge was opened in March 2017.  From there, Andrew and I crossed the bridge and dropped into the bush, off the path.  We fossicked around in the bush and undergrowth, to see if we could bush bash up that side of the river to the tops.  But after a bit of rummaging, Andrew declared we were better off on the track for a bit on the other side - before haring off up to the tops up a spur.

I found one of those large carnivorous snail shells while blundering up and down that side of the river - so I was happy.  And as we did that, a gaggle of men ran past us on the track, chatting away to themselves. We were lucky enough to see two giant earthworms during the day too.  The snails eat them.  Must be a huge meal for them.  The worms were probably close to 15 cm long, and maybe as thick as my pinky finger.  Looks like a lot of eating for a snail - even a big snail.

Back on the other side, and we took a track that said it was No Exit.  Hmmm.  Hahahah.  But the track certainly exited - right up the side of a huge hill.  The path was rough - and marked with tape for the most part.  Sometimes it was hard to find the next tape marking the track direction.  I fell off the path frequently.  We would fan out a bit between us to find the next tape.

It was slowly drizzling with rain the entire time.  The first high point made me a little cold, even with hardly any wind.  I put my gloves on, and kept them on the entire rest of the way.

From here, we tramped along the tops, finding a few more highpoints.  We didn't get lost - but Andrew was making good use of his map and compass.  Without that we would have never found our way.  Eventually we got to the bottom of our highest point, and did some off track navigation up the the top.  The scrub was so thick.  Andrew wormed his way through it and I followed.

At this stage, the Super Mario game Toby used to play came to mind.  The one where the hero does all the tricky stuff, and the hanger-on gets hauled along in a wee bubble, keeping out of trouble.

However, in some of the thicker scrub, that had Andrew on his hands and knees crawling under - I managed to scurry through without much trouble.

Basically, it was like a childhood adventure.  Crawling through bush, exploring wild areas and eating chocolate when you could.  What more could you want from a day?

Got to the top and saw...  nothing.  The clagged in weather continued.  Andrew pointed in the direction of the Wairarapa.  But as we came up to another high point (550m) we saw back at where we had walked through the clouds.  Lovely.

Smashed down to the swing bridge in half the posted time.  Ooossshhh.  Back at the car by 5pm.  Exhausted.  And really unhappy at the prospect of changing in the toilet at the road end.  It was not a pleasant place.  So I stripped in the passenger seat of the car - hoping my efforts steamed up the windows enough to prevent too much of a peep show.

Back to Iona and Col's for a shower and a scrumptious meal.  Col had bumped into Malcolm and Marion in the supermarket, so they came for tea too.  And Carrie and Ed - friends around for dinner in their original plans before we threw our spanner in the works.

Huntsman pie - yummy!

A bit of chatting late into the night saw me fall into bed after 10pm.  What was I thinking?  Fool!  And Col woke me at 3.50am to get dressed and follow her bleary eyed to watch the All Blacks play South Africa.  Her sister kindly let us sprawl on her couch to watch it.

Awesome game - we won by one point!

Back for a snooze before brekkie at 10am.  Oat pancakes.  Mmmmm.  Chatted a bit more.  Spoke to Mike for a while to hear his adventures.

And off for lunch to Soskys before we headed home.

Iced coffee at Soskys.  Not bad.  Solid 6.

Enjoyed a Rooibos with Sally before heading home to do my filthy laundry.  Collected Mike from Melling at 7pm and soaked in a bath with him for a while before another exhausted sleep.

What a weekend!  Wow!  Just... wow!

Thank you to everyone.

Love,
Angela

The weekend in PN

Hi,

What a great weekend, even if it didn't quite go to plan.  I headed away from work around 4.30pm and managed to negotiate the traffic out of Wellington for a Friday evening without too much hassle.  I was in Palmerston North by 7:05pm.  Without stopping for anything.  Just the usual traffic snarls.

Chatted to Iona and ate roast veges with her.  They have a surfeit of cauli this winter in their vege patch.  It's not bad once roasted.  Managed to get the photos off Col's phone from the Nelson trip and onto a laptop.  Yay for knowing when to run an executable to get the drivers sorted so the laptop can see the phone.

A sore back (like, really sore) for Iona meant a bike ride wasn't looking too likely.  Mind you, my slight cold was feeling like it was about to peak and really, a day lazing about was probably a good idea.

Smudge this morning

Fell in love with this wee dog called Ruby

Iced coffee at some cafe attached to a homeware shop

Walk!

This amused me

Moxies iced coffee

Saturday morning saw Iona and I at Moxies to meet Carrie and Ed for brekkie while Col met her family to celebrate her nephew's 14th birthday!  Yay for birthdays.

From there we went back home to cook tea for the pot luck dinner.  Well, Iona cooked it.  We also went for a walk with Frida and explored some river bank.  Palmerston North is a little rabbit warren like for me.  No idea where I was really.

View!

Better view?  Hahahah.

After another cafe session to see the unveiling of some artwork Fleur did for some friends, we headed back home to collect the dinner and then drove to Whanganui to visit some friends to watch the rugby.  Dianne and Chris.  Shelly and Kate were there too.  The company was very welcoming and the food was superb - but I have to say I was completely taken by their wee dog, Ruby.  She is a West Highland terrier crossed with a poodle (maybe a miniature poodle by the size of her).  Soooooo cute!

I may have taken many photos of her.  But she was mostly a blur of fur.

The rugby was so exciting.  But anti climatic in the end as a draw on the night meant the series was a draw.  Good for rugby.

Drove back and may have got distracted by Wimbledon on the TV until the wee hours.  Up too early really.  But got those good oaty pancakes for brekkie.  Mmmmm.

Another walk before work called and I managed to get Iona's laptop into my work email and got the info needed to help the issue.  Then drove back to Wellington.  Got caught up in some traffic in the usual spots.  Coming into Porirua was like driving into the apocalypse.  Dark clouds that burst with rain as I got closer.

Off to the Mexican place next to the Roxy to meet Josh and the boys for tea before the new Spider-Man movie.  Woot!  Good fun.

It's school holidays and Toby is a happy camper.  He will no doubt enjoy the time off.

Have a great week ahead!  Thanks for my weekend!

Angela

The weekend with an exhibition

Hi,

Well, after an odd week, the weekend was surprisingly normal really.  The boys got home on Friday and Toby heard he got 86% in his science exam the day before (Thurs).  He thought his Maths exam was the hardest, but he hopes he did ok.  I was very proud of his science achievement.

I got up super early on Saturday and headed out to collect Andrew from his place in the wee green car.  I took a photo of the stick insect on the garage first though.  And for some reason I couldn't unlock the car so I made poor Mike get out of bed and it unlocked immediately for him.  Andrew and I headed up to Palmerston North, checking out slips along the way (a fair bit - we could see where slips closed SH1).  Met Iona and Col at Moxies on George St and enjoyed a lovely brekkie there.

Moxies iced cofee

From there we wandered around to the gallery where Iona's weaving Masters course were exhibiting their graded items.  Wow!  Iona is very talented and her classmates are as well.  The ideas collated over the years of the course and executed so well were amazing to see.  And this is from me, who knows nothing about weaving techniques but can appreciate art and effort and creativity.

Back to Iona and Col's place for lunch and the cousins arrived from Chch and Wellington to also see the exhibition.  Liz, Rowena and Alison.  So it was a marvellous catch up time for lunch for all the cousins.  And me and Col.  Hahah.

Stick insect on the garage

Andrew and I left when Iona took her second entourage through the exhibition.  It was a lovely drive back and I was home to see Mike before too long.

Emerson and Duncan were visiting for a sleepover so it was nice to see them after not seeing them for a wee while.  To say I saw them might be pushing the boundaries of the sentiment there.  They enjoyed the computer time and Toby's company more than mine.  But when food was presented, I did get to see them.

A lazy day Sunday where Mike and I watched a television series - very unusual for us.  Gorgeous day it was too.  Tried to clear the garage - put it off for a few weeks,

Right.  We're back at work now and although our building is in the news a lot, it is just cosmetic damage and the building is fine!

Enjoy your week.  I have a short week - Friday off to head to Taupo for the big race.  So excited I can barely sleep.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with Toby

Hi,

Oh - I had a fantastic weekend.  Mike was scheduled to be busy most of the weekend with tramping related things.  So Toby and I had organised a weekend away for the two of us.

We left early Friday and got stuck in diabolical traffic and then horrendous weather as we drove to Otaki.  Toby ate Maccas at Plimmerton and then we crawled our way to Waikanae.  How anyone bothers with that car commute is beyond me.  The rain then lashed down not far out of Otaki.

We stayed at the Cottage Park Motel, on the north side of Otaki on SH1.  It was a cute wee unit, but only had Freeview on the TV.  And no free wifi.  But we enjoyed the accommodation.  Such a cute wee unit.  Like a log cabin.  With a mezzanine for overflow.

Our wee unit -  very cute

We were in bed super early and so we played the animal alphabet game.  Made it all the way to the letter T before we switched to naming States of America.  Toby (with a small amount of prompting) got to 25.  I was quite impressed.  How on earth does he even know Delaware exists?  This game sent us into a coma.

Up fairly late and showered.  We left to have breakfast in Otaki around 10am.  I bought my Icebreaker pants and Toby got a beanie.  Then at Kathmandu we got Toby a replacement jacket which made him happy.  It's funny, I knew his current jacket was small, but until he tried the small Mens size on, I didn't realise how small it was on him.

We went to the $2 shop and Toby loved the bootleg merchandise.  We bought a Sherk mask!  Toby loves it!

A Sherk mask

We left Otaki around 11am and drove past Shannon (remembering Owlcatraz for a later visit) and we were soon in Palmerston North, catching up with Iona and Col for lunch.  Great iced coffee at the Cafe Express (somewhere on the square).

Great iced coffee

We ducked into an art exhibition and they had art installations that worked off the electricity in your body.  By closing the circuit, something cool happened.  The umbrella was my favourite.  You held the handle and LEDs dribbled "rain" off it.  There was a dark room with paintings made with bioluminescence.  Awesome.

Off to the mall and more bootleg stuff and a quick trip to JB Hi Fi.  Then we said goodbye to Iona and Col before heading to the new Captain America movie.  Ooosshhh. Civil War.  It was good.

Dodgy bootleg

More dodgy bootleg

It was dark when we left Palmerston North and headed through the Manawatu Gorge to Masterton.  A few slow vehicles but we got to the Copthorne by 6.30pm. Checked in and I had a bath.  Then we went to dinner and Toby got the steak.  Mmmmm.  Back to our room and Toby then had a bath.

He came back to bed and wanted to play the animal alphabet game again.  But I was asleep and I am unsure if I actually answered any - or maybe I said "turtle" 5 times.  Not sure!  Hahahah.  But we were soon both asleep.

Next morning we had brekkie and then checked out and Toby tested his skills on the confidence course.

Balancing

Climbing

More balancing

Turns out my son has awesome skills.  Yay for Toby.

Hopped in the car and headed home.  Mike was out doing Meetup things but got home soon.  Toby went swimming with Josh and the boys.  Mike tidied the laundry up and it is now amazing!  You don't have to climb over anything!  Wow.  Hallway is clear too.

Did my ironing.  Groan.  Mike did grocery shopping.  And we had a lovely tea together.  Woot!

Up early for my run and I felt good after a bit of a slack time recently.  Made a good time and did my 5km.  Yay for Mike kicking me out of bed.

The week stretches ahead.  Not sure if next weekend will have as much fun in store as this one did.  I loved Toby's company.  I am a lucky mother.

Have a wonderful week.

Love,
Angela
