The Monday at work

Hi,

Happy birthday to Toby today.  Fifteen years old.  Wow.

After buying a present for Toby yesterday, I had a hard time carrying it back to work.  My arms are still sore a day later.  Got home after collecting the Ford from the dealer for its service, alternator switch out and new tyres.  Ouch!  No wonder Mike asked me to pick it up.  My credit card was hammered.

When I got home, I saw the builders had done something during the day.  Ripped up floorboards.  And left a huge hole down to the basement.  I think they might never have heard of WorkSafe.

The builders left a huge hole into the basement - they are really rather odd with their work

Anyway, Toby wanted dinner, so I sorted that out and made a salad for myself.  Mmmmm.

Made a salad for myself

Progress - we have a deck

And... still hoping for no rain as we have no flashing.

This morning we popped into Toby's room nice and early and gave him some presents.  We'll find a cake and have a nice dinner tonight.  Mike's mother is going to come over.

Caught the bus in with Toby.  I have the heavy present at work still and I am not looking forward to trying to carry it home.

Toby has the best day ever for his birthday.  Stunning weather.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with Toby in Blenheim

Hi,

Toby and I had a great weekend in sunny, hot, Blenheim.  We managed to finish packing the car after work and got down to my work to collect my bike.  Unfortunately I forgot there would be no back seat for Mike so he said he'd meet us at the ferry queue.  Toby and I were very close to the start of the queue.  Maybe the 6th car there.

I checked in fine and Toby flew down the footpath behind us to catch a purple balloon that was bobbing its way down the street.  Mike turned up with Andrew in tow so we all chatted for a bit.  Then Doro and Momo turned up with Zoey.  It was becoming quite social.  Anyway, soon it was time to board and Andrew dashed away to catch his train and see Sally.  Mike, Momo and Doro went to sit on a beach and enjoy the summer evening.

The ferry was practically empty.  Toby and I sat on a couch and chair in a corner and had most of the entire room to ourselves.  I read and Toby played a game and fell asleep.  We didn't get into Picton until close to 12.45am.

As we popped out of the Wellington harbour heads, Mike rang and they were on a beach with a bonfire.  Astonishingly I found their fire on the south coast as we pulled into the Strait.  Such perfect conditions.

We got off the ferry nice and fast and headed into Blenheim.  Found the Top10 easily and the after hours letterbox with our key in it.  Toby ripped it all open and inadvertently ripped the camp map in half too.  Hahah.  Piecing it together, we found unit 8 in the dark and drove around to it.

Toby was unsure of the unit as I found 10, then 9 and then 8.  He said it didn't seem right.  As our key said 8, and the room door said 8, I didn't think much of it.  But the key wouldn't open the door.  Odd.  Mind you, the Taupo house we had also had a front door key that didn't work.  So I just kinda thought I was cursed with dodgy keys.  The window next to the door was open, so I asked my tall, long-limbed son to reach in and open the front door.

The door opened and we stepped in.  I turned the lights on and looked around.  Hmmmm.  Not quite what I was expecting in terms of how the room was set up.  Doubt now creeps in.  I ask Toby for the map.  Peer at that with the benefit of some lights.  Remember, it was about 1.15am at this stage.  And realise, to my horror, that the Top10 actually has two unit 8s.  Two!  Next to each other, practically.

Toby and I look at each other, realising the bullet we'd dodged by breaking into an empty room - because what would have happened if someone had been sleeping in there!  OMG!  We turned out the light, locked the door and shut it.

We casually walked 3 m further on and unlocked the door of the other unit 8 easily.  I drove the car the 3 m and we unpacked and fell into bed.  We both had a room each, with no windows.  And it was hot.  Blenheim is hot!

Anyway, I woke up around 7am and read for a bit before Iona came around.  She actually discovered there were 3 or 4 unit 8s at this Top10.  All rather confusing.  But at least she had our car to pinpoint the real unit 8 we were in.  I showered and we left Toby to continue sleeping while we both walked to Grove Road cafe and enjoyed a great iced coffee and some pastries.

Iced coffee at a cafe called 23 Grove Road - a good one at a solid 8

After eating there, we wandered further into the town and explored the river area and a few shops before coming back to rouse Toby from bed.  We piled him into the car and drove out to Pelorus with me singing (poor other occupants of the car).  We parked up outside the cafe there and hoped to get poached eggs for Toby.  No such luck.  We had drinks and Iona and I shared a sttrawberry cheesecake which was actually superb.  My iced coffee was good too.

Another iced coffee - also good - at Pelorus bridge cafe

We wandered around the Circle Loop for a wee walk - 45 mins on the sign.  Maybe it took us 30 minutes at a leisurely pace.  But the views were stunning.

Sounds sensible to stay on the bridge

Back to Blenheim and a little bit of birthday shopping for Toby ahead of his birthday this week.  As we walked back to the car to meet Iona, he said his life was perfect.  Well, that was easy perfection.

We went to Alistair and Vicky's house and watched in amazement as they emptied their garage and set up new shelving.  In the heat!  Wow. We chatted for a bit before Toby and I headed back to the Top10.  And we may have both fallen asleep for an hour or so before heading back to see Iona and have dinner with her.

Such fresh lettuce and salad - yum.  And chicken.  I ate the chicken because it seemed silly to mention I was a vegetarian at that point.  But I gave Toby one of my chicken pieces to not took too obvious.  In the end I did mention that I don't eat much meat (ok, pretty much none).  But it seems so fussy to be picky about such things.  maybe I just eat meat if I need to...

We chatted to Col on the phone - then Mike.  And Toby and I headed back to our unit although I think it was quite late by then.  Like 11pm!  Toby watched a movie and I snored my head off.

Up early the next morning, but tied to the bed like it was a magnet.  Eventually I got up and packed up. It was actually raining lightly.  Weird.  Toby and I got on our bikes and checked out. leaving the car at the Top10.  We rode down SH1, with Toby getting used to the bike on the footpath.  By the time we got to Watery Mouth, he was fine.

Iced coffee at Watery Mouth cafe - good solid 8

Iona was there already with her bike.  We had a scrumptious brekkie.  And then we biked down the river path to the Farmers Market.  Got a load of raspberries and some pastries.  Then continued up the river to Taylor Dam.

So, so hot.  Lucky we bought a bottle of water for Iona on the way.  We could have done with a lot more of it.  So hot.  We ate in the shade and scoffed the last of our water.  Iona shared some of hers with us though.  I filled up a bottle from the tap at the toilets, but was only keeping that for emergencies.

The ride back went fast, despite the headwind.  Got to Alistair and Vicky's house and drank their cold water fridge supply empty.  Hahah.  Iona and I sat on the porch in old school fold up camp chairs and chatted away.  But, something weird happened.  I fell asleep.  While sitting upright in this camp chair.  And I think Iona took photos.  Anyway, I must have slept for a while like this because once I was up and about, Iona had mysteriously showered.  She said she told me, but that was all news to me!

We went to a hotel and listened to Alistair's jazz band play.  I think Toby actually liked it.  From there, Toby and I rode back to the Top10, piled the bikes into the car and headed to the ferry.

It was another smooth sailing back, with barely any swell at all through the Strait.  Such lovely weather.  What a fantastic weekend.  Toby said to Mike when he got home that he didn't think he would enjoy the weekend that much - but he really had a great time.  Woot!

Toby's birthday tomorrow.  So excited.

Have a brilliant week.

Love,
Angela

The Thursday with beer tasting

Hi,

I'm not sure how Celia got such a soft focus look in my photo when we grabbed a coffee together.  I think my phone was mucky - but maybe she just found the most excellent filter.  Hahah.

Iced latte with Celia at Machete

Stunning day, and we went home and sorted out nibbles for Mike's beer tasting session.  Him and some friends had brewed up beer and it was a taste session.  I think most of them got a good review.

Toby and I are off this weekend to Blenheim for some fun in the sun at the Top10 there.  To check it all out.  And swim.  And bike.  And eat.  Mike has some "Beers in the Park" event on, with music and friends.

I know what I would rather be doing - and I am!

It's Toby's last day at school today for 2017.  Wow.  It's been a good year.

Hope your weekend is lots of fun.

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with some progress on the house

Hi,

When I got home, the builder's progress was a bit more obvious - although they still haven't done the flashing.  Lucky the weather is absolutely sublime and there's not much chance of rain.  We had the top bathroom vanity removed and the laundry sink and cupboards all gone too.  In preparation for the new cupboards and whatnot.

More progress

I actually got the BBQ out and cooked tea for me and the boys before Mike got home.  It was pretty much ready as he sat down.  Ooosshh.  Cheeky monkey asked when I had learned to use the BBQ.  Aha.

Harbour this morning with the Interislander leaving port

Beautiful

We got a few tasks done before crashing into bed.  So hot that we only used a top sheet the whole night.  It's like living in Australia.

I walked in this morning and only wore a t-shirt and shorts - even at 5.59am when I left the house.  Went to Spin and now am at my desk with a crazy looking day ahead.

Hopefully Toby and Mike have had a great morning and an even better day.  You too.

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday with our wedding aniversary

Hi,

Well, since I was last here, I seemed to have packed an awful lot in.  Monday evening Toby came to my work and did some Christmas shopping for his mates before we met Mike at the car.  We both got changed into suitable walking gear and joined the car park that is the motorway out of Wellington.

Oh - I did get an iced coffee out of the day though - it was good to catch up with Ed and hear about his Peruvian adventures on the Inca trail.

Iced latte at Machete

And Ed took a selfie.  He's just like Toby!

Anyway, we may have driven through Maccas on our way out to Paekakariki.  Fortified with food, we started out with quite a few of the punters that joined Janine's evening walk.  Toby hadn't been keen at all - but once he was walking, he loved it so much.

Start of the Paekakariki escarpment track

Dramatic water drinking from Toby

I think we started walking at 6.30pm, and finished by 9pm.  The sun had only just got down by the end of it.  It was such a lot of fun.

Next day was our anniversary day.  25 years together today - and 18 of them married.  Woot!  Worth celebrating.  I had the day off, but Mike could only get a half day off.  I popped into the supermarket to get picnic things and collected Mike from work and headed around to Pencarrow.  We walked in about 1 - 2 km and found a shady patch of beach next to a huge rock.

Feet on feet!

Reading on the beach - my spot is in the shadow of the huge rock
Tried a selfie on timer, but I just look really awkward

We must have sat there for a few hours, enjoying the lovely weather and peacefulness of it all.  At 4.30pm we decided on a whim to pick up the vanity for the bathroom.  Apparently we weren't getting it delivered when we expected it, as someone came in after Mike ordered it, and said "I am here for my brother Mike, to collect his vanity" and took the one my Mike ordered in.  Hahahah.

We hurtled around the bays at Eastbourne and made it to Plumbing World in time to catch the manager of the store.  He was happy to sell us more stuff - such a nice man.

From there we hurtled home, dropped off the vanity, towel rail and whatever else was in that other box and then drove back into town.  Mike had made reservations at Hillside in Tinakori Road.

Tiny meringue

OMG - what an amazing place.  I would totally go back there in a second.  I got a vegetarian menu and Mike got their usual one.  And everything I ate was so good.  Eggplant with dried labneh.  Roasted cauliflower with whatever that crunchy stuff was.  It was just incredible.

Mike definitely chose well for our evening meal.

Back home and hauled myself into bed before exhaustion won.

What do you think I will be recording in 25 years time as we celebrate that milestone?  Hahahah.  Fun!

Enjoy your day.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with Christmas party and camping

Hi,

Happy birthday to wee Tyler.

What a weird weekend - my work Christmas party and Mike and Toby off camping.  Anyway, let's see.  Mike got home at a fairly reasonable hour after flying in from Auckland, Ubering to Doro's place, taking her and Zoey for a walk and bringing the car back.  Woot!

My BBQ dinner

Before the steak went on

The next day was a slow start - but Mike and Toby eventually left the house around 2pm for their camping trip.  Hahahah.  They decided to sleep in the car.  Hmmmm.

Meanwhile, I knew I would likely pike from the Christmas party without Mike to cajole me along.  So I arranged for Mary and Campbell to collect me.  Worked a treat because I was seriously happy to stay home.

We got in early and enjoyed the atmosphere.  80s theme.  Music from my teenage years and very pleased to have moved on from most of that.  Hahahah.  Nice finger food.

Celia won the most coveted award of the night - and fully deserves it.  Good on her.  As a wider team, we actually did very well.  Woot!

Mary and her husband left just after 10pm and I took the ride home.  Relaxed in bed and up late the next day.  Mike and Toby got back around 11am or so.  Then it was time to take Toby to the Thorndon fair - we walked down, and wandered around.  Went to New World, and Mike drove in to get us.

Then Toby and I went out to find our tree.  The Christmas tree folks said we chose the tree the fastest of anyone.  Toby knows the tree that speaks to him immediately.  We got it home and decorated.

Big tree, but even bigger Toby - he barely needs to reach

He made this so many years ago!

We then had an awesome BBQ - thanks Mike.  And I enjoyed a bath.  I may have put Taylor Swift on, and sung my little heart out.  Toby was just the other side of the bath door, playing a computer game.  Eventually I wondered where Mike was, and shouted out to Toby several times to get him.  Nothing happened.  I continued singing.

Anyway, her new song, called something like "Look what you made me do" has some tricky lyrics where she changes her phrasing.  So I was closing my eyes, mostly submerged under the bubbly bath bomb surface, concentrating on getting the lyrics right.  When I opened my eyes, Mike was standing in the doorway and gave me a huge fright.  I slipped further under the surface, with legs shooting into the air, collecting on the tapware as they flailed.  I have two bruises now.

Mike reckons his and Toby's ears were bruised from my singing, so it was fair.  Apparently once I started singing, Toby stopped playing his game and went upstairs.  No wonder nothing happened when I yelled at him.

Did I show you this?

Anyway - the roof has progressed.  It's still open to the elements.  I heard rats running around last night.  They must think they are living in a tent.

Anyway, tonight we have the Paekakariki escarpment walk after work.  That should be lovely.

And tomorrow Mike and I have been together for 25 years - and married for 18 of them.  Wow.  Our marriage is now an adult.

Have a brilliant week.  I have tomorrow off - 25 years seems worthy of a day off with Mike.

Love,
Angela

The Thursday with no Mike

Hi,

Well, after a crazy day (I may have had two iced lattes - and been a bit wired by the time I got home), it was good to get home and relax.  Even if there was no Mike.

Iced latte early with Mark

Iced latte late with Celia - and obviously caffeine is making an impact

I went to the supermarket after work and got milk (dire need) and dinner ingredients.  A few non essentials too.  But as I walked to the checkout queue with my brimming basket, an alarm started blaring at the front of the shop.  Weird.  No one seemed alarmed (hahahah - a mother joke).  So I queued, with everyone else.  The busy checkout operators worked as usual, although maybe shouting to be heard over the noise of the alarm more than usual.

As I looked around, I saw people leaving the supermarket in droves from elsewhere in the shop.  Still, nothing at checkout.  Business as usual.  My queue got closer to the checkout.  Then I noticed the self serve people leaving too.

And, eventually, we got told to put our shopping down and leave.  Oh.  It was a fire alarm.  If there was a real fire, I would have burned already.  Hopeless.

As I went to the bus stop, I saw/heard three fire engines descending on the alarm.  Nice.  Got home, and Toby had eaten leftover pizza and was happy anyway.  Good.

No roof!

And the builders had made progress.  No roof over the front door.  Guess that is progress.

Progress

This morning Smudge came into my room with Toby and she climbed up onto the window sill above our bed.  Very weird.
What is Smudge doing?

Today is stunning.  Hope the weekend is as wonderful.  Mike is back late today.  Yay.  Have a brilliant day.

Love,
Angela
