The weekend with Mike away surviving in the bush

 Hi,

The big news was my mother's right hip surgery on Friday.  She went into the operation late (for me) and I do not think I heard until around 6pm that she was out and in recovery.  And poor Dad - he went home intending to go back on Saturday to visit. But the weather had other plans.  SEQ has been flooded - a 30 year high.  And he tried to get back south on Saturday and got to those humps in the road about 15km south of their place and the road was impassable.  Wow!

Anyway - he eventually got through Sunday to see her.  And she is up and walking with a walker.  She will be amazed at how much better it will be once the operation pain eases and she can walk unaided once more.  Mum - do your physio exercises!

Fairly relaxing weekend for us.  Friday did see Sally and Andrew pop around briefly late in the evening to say hi.  Hadn't seen them for ages so I brought up the pics from the river trip.  They are doing okay - except covid is nibbling at the edges of their workplace - as it is at ours.

Saturday morning stunner

Saturday was stunning.  Up for boot camp in Frank Kitts park and back home to get ready for Mike's survivor night away.  Orongaronga valley with his mates.

Moxley exploring the front yard

Moxley chasing my stick

Solar panels doing their thing

I spent the evening clean beer bottles with Moxley's help and watching romcoms that Mike is never interested in watching.

Up Sunday to make myself an iced latte and it wasn't too long before Mike got back from his trip.  Having survived.

Sunday morning iced latte

Mushroom pie for tea

Made Mushroom Wellington for tea - we haven't had that for ages.  Yummy.

Monday iced latte

And off to bed early as Mike was wiped out by barely hanging on to survive.  :-p   Up for brekkie before work on Monday.

Let's see what the week has in store.  Workload.  Covid.  Mum's progress.  All interesting times.

Love,

Angela

The Thursday with bottling beer

 Hi,

Mike had to bottle the batch of beer he made two weeks ago, and Andrew is still snowed under with work.  So I said I would bottle their hazy IPA with Mike.

We decided (okay - why we did this I do not know) to use Google to direct us to the Occasional Brewer through the 5pm traffic.  It took us possibly the worst way ever.  We sat in traffic for so long.  Through Thorndon, down Bowen, down the quays and up by the Basin.  Took over 40 mins.

Mike gave feedback.  Hahahah.

Anyway.  We got stuck in.  The bottles needed to get washed and sterilised.  So I did the bottling part as Mike cleaned the bottles.

There is a sign up to say you need clean bottles and need to remove cigarette stubs and weta.  Turns out this is true because Mike came up to me with a huge weta from one of our bottles.  He rushed it outside and left it in a bush.  It will be very surprised to find itself there, no doubt.

Draining the beer from one tub to the next

The dregs - literally

After 2 hours we were out of there.  With all our bottled beers.  They will stay stored here at our house for two weeks and then they should (hopefully) be good to go.

Waiting at The Botanist for our takeaway fish n chips

With the nice evening, I asked Mike if we could go to The Botanist and buy their vegan fish n chips takeaways and eat at the beach.  I had noticed the option on their menu last week when we visited.  We sat inside waiting for the food and Mike enjoyed a beer.  Got our food and poor Mike endured a bit of a cold southerly coming straight onshore as we tucked into the food.

Quite a nice view for tea

Banana blossom for fish is pretty good

I looked up what banana blossom is.  It is the fruit that hangs from a bunch of bananas - and a vegetarian substitute for fish as it is white and flakes away.  It was pretty good - if super oily.  Ate it quickly and walked back to the car and headed home to wash the bottles and store them away.

Pic of me from Elly from the weekend.

Tyler did so well last year.  What an inspiration.

Karen sent me a link to Tyler's old high school showing her achievements last year in her final year of high school.  She is now at uni and going to be successful - I am sure.

Caught the cats pretending to like each other this morning

This morning I went upstairs after Mike had left for his potato cakes brekkie and found the cats lying next to each other on the bed upstairs.  All the house to themselves and they chose to be that close to each other.  Yeah - they actually don't mind each other sometimes.

The weekend is coming.  Not as exciting as a canoe trip this weekend.  Mike has survivor night.  Bwhahahahah.  Boot camp tomorrow morning then he is off and I will tidy the house and pine for his return.

Have a great weekend.

Love,

Angela

The Wednesday with work

 Hi,

My day at work (WFH) wasn't too bad.  Had some meetings cancel, which was quite nice.  Gave me time to get other things done.  Although network disruptions did put a bit of a brake on some work we wanted to do.  However, that got sorted and we'll make ground back.

I did note that our chilli plant has about 5 flowers on it now.  This plant is from Roanne so I am a bit worried at the hotness factor of whatever comes from this plant.  Probably inedible for me.  But it does have the prettiest wee flowers.  The other slightly older chilli plant is also flourishing.  The transplant from pot to the vege patch gave it a fright and it has taken months for it to recover and start growing with vigour. I also have no idea what that chilli fruit will be like.  :-o  It is not the same as this one below.

Chilli plant has a few flowers now

Buddha bowl tea time

After work I walked to Northland to collect the orange car from the garage after its service and WoF.  $650 later!  Ouch!  No wonder Mike asked me to go get it.  :-p

Popped into Countdown to grab a few things before I came home.

Made Buddha Bowls for tea for the first time in ages.  No spinach - but it was pretty good anyway.

And not too long out of bed, really.  Slept okay and up for the online PT session in the park at the bottom of our street.  What a lovely idea.  Mike met us at the park for his 1 hour session and I left him and online Quentin there.

Big day at work - lots of meetings.  Here we go!

Have a good one.

Angela

Solar panels on the roof - the first three weeks

As Angela's said, we now have solar panels on our roof. So how's it going after three weeks or so?

Our motivation for solar was primarily to generate watts of power that didn't need to come from Indonesian coal, shipped across the Tasman to the Huntly power station. Secondary was to save money even if it took a long payback.

We didn't do all the research we should have to fully understand all the nuances of what we were about to do - instead we put ourselves in the hands of Harrisons Solar who had a good reputation both from the internet and word of mouth. We don't regret it, they were extremely helpful, professional, and did a really good job.

We (well, our bank) spent $13k all up on a 12 panel, 4.7kW system. This is for a smallish 3br house with a 250L electric hot water system, nice north facing sun on an appropriately sloping roof, and 2 of us living here (though we wanted to spec the panels for the next owners too). We turned down the $18k Tesla battery.

We also changed power suppliers to Contact Energy who currently offer free electricity between 9pm and 12am - this works really nicely so we only really draw lots of power at dawn and dusk, the rest is mostly either free or helped along by solar. We've changed our behaviour to eg only run the washing machine and dishwasher at 9pm, or in the middle of the day if we need to. I'm going to put timers on the towel rails and suchlike.

Half our panels (the western ones)

So how's it gone then? This is what we've found.

There seems to be a lot to consider in the install. You don't just throw panels on the roof and hope for the best. They're interlinked in a way that means they only give you the power of the least performing panel in the bank; you need an even number of panels in a bank; and so on.  There are a bewildering selection of inverters at very different price, functionality and quality points too.  A DIY job would take a lot of research and discussion with experts, and the right sparky to work with you, although there are also a lot of websites that do much of this work for you.  We ended up with a bank of six north-facing panels, and a 2nd bank of six west-facing panels as the best solution.

It's kinda obvious, but if your roof is dodgy you need to replace or fix your roof before you do the solar work. You don't want to put panels up then need to take them down again to sort your roof. We replaced our roof a few years back, from the original iron the house was built with.

Solar generates steady power, but you use power in short intensive peaks. That means that without a battery, it's hard to ensure that you're using the power you make - you're either spilling to the grid or sucking from the grid for most of the time. And you pay a lot more for power you use, than they pay you for power you export.

In the following pictures,

  • Yellow = solar power we use ourselves
  • Grey = excess solar power we export to the grid
  • Blue line = our actual consumption, when it spikes into the white area that's grid power we're using.

This is the best case - a sunny summer's day.

A more typical day with cloudy periods.

Our inverter is battery ready. I'm expecting batteries to come down in price a lot over the next few years, with increased demand, maturing tech and a heap of second life EV batteries hitting the market. Or we'll have a mobile battery with four wheels and a steering wheel in our garage in the next few years. Even a relatively small one to smooth out the peaks and troughs would be nice. Another thing is that when you sell your house you can take the battery with you no worries. Even if your next house didn't have solar you can charge it at night and use it during the day.

I was expecting to use the hot water cylinder as our battery. But, because its thermostat is either off (0W) or on (3000W) it peaks beyond what the panels can generally provide. After more research than I really wanted to do, I settled on a $26 timer fitted to the switchboard, that switches on the hot water cylinder just for three hours during the Contact Energy 'free power' evening. That's enough to provide hot water all day. I've since written a ridiculously detailed blog post about it.

I'm looking forward to my next electricity bill! I don't really know how our reduced grid usage, free night power and the (not much) money we get exporting power to the grid will all work out. I'm going to do a spreadsheet to see how our payback goes, including paying mortgage interest on the principal. I suspect not all that well. But, Indonesian coal.

The Tuesday that was my first day back after a long weekend

 Hi,

It is always confusing when you have a day off that no one else has off.  Tuesday really felt like Monday.  And because it was a special date (22.2.22) social media took to calling it Twosday.  But to me - it was still Monday.  Hahah.

After work, Mike and I walked up to the flax clearing and back.  The wild weather in recent times has felled a pine tree in the trees below Izard Park.  Big hole where the roots were.

Start of the walk

Off to bed while Mike pottered around.  Slept well.  Up for brekkie and Mike dropped the Focus off at the garage for a WoF and Service.  I picked him up and now we're at work.

Another day.

Have a good one.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with canoeing adventures

 Hi,

A brief update for now - but we (I am including Mike in this) will blog about the awesome weekend in more detail in its very own post.  Because - it was so, so good.  Everyone should do it.

For now - a quick overview.

Blast from the past in the 4 Square at National Park

Mike's packing!

This is just a taster.  Eight of us in 4 Canadian canoes, tackling the mighty Whanganui river.  In pretty good conditions!  Read more soon!

Me, Mike, Callan, Stacey, Elly, Tom, Theresa and her mate Claire.  Intrepid, all of us!

Amazing river experience

Finally got to Bridge to Nowhere

Camping on the grounds of the marae

Another day, another beautiful gorge

The best boat!  Ta Elly.

Damage to my beautiful feet

Tuesday morning iced latte with Barb

Home to a good night sleep again (we both slept well the entire weekend).  Up for an hour of PT with Quentin - my core got another workout.  What???

Quick jaunt into town to meet Juliet (briefly) and Barb for a coffee, avoiding the concrete blocks that corral the protesters.  And back home for my first meeting.

Short week for us.  Let's see what is happening.

Have a good one.
Love,
Angela

The Thursday with my birthday

 Hi,

Well - turns out the best day of February so far was the day of my birthday.  An absolute cracker of a day.  No wind.  Clear skies.

Chatted to Mum and Dad before lunch.  Mum looked well - she had used my present of a facial the day before at a local spa.  She is looking forward (okay - probably with mixed feelings) to her operation on her hip on Feb 25th.  She has a few checks beforehand to pass before the surgery proceeds.  But fingers crossed it all goes ahead.  She will recover well and be amazed at how much better she will feel.  If she needs me though - I am off to visit!

Moxley enjoying the sunshine

Ange came around after work and dropped off our hedge trimmer.  (As a side note:  we had forgotten she had it, and thought we needed to buy one again.  So now we are super keen to take to the garden with our hedge trimmer!  Excited!).  And she also said goodbye to us.  She has moved out of the house and into Danita's place until she leaves on Sunday morning on the ferry to start her year at Otago Uni.  And I could not be more proud to know someone right now.  Wow!  I wish her all the best.  She is amazing and the little critters of Aotearoa could not be luckier that she will study how to help them thrive here.  Go Ange!

Saying goodbye to Ange as she grasps life by the scruff and wrestles it to her liking

I then got to open the presents Mike got me.  He did well.  I got containers for the things we usually have on the windowsill above the kitchen sink.  Soap, sanitiser and dishwashing liquid.  As well as a fancy compost container.  See the bottom of the post for a picture of how it looks today (Fri).

My presents

After opening presents (thanks Mike) we went to The Botanist for my birthday dinner.  Such a gorgeous evening and I did think of Fran because she lives just around the corner from there.  :-)

Lovely meal.  I also had two virgin sangrias.  Yummy.  Ate far too much - as did Mike.

At The Botanist for birthday dinner

Virgin sangria.  Tastes great without wine in it.

Tropical beach weather

Chatted to Toby and Tessa while we looked at Lyall Bay after the dinner.  That was a perfect way to finish our meal.  Enjoying the view and chatting to them.

Look at Lyall Bay!

Drove back to visit Wally, Hannah and Jason on Grant Rd.  Spent an hour or two with a nice cup of tea chatting away to them all.

Sigh.  I have missed them.  Covid has kept us apart within NZ as much as it has kept me apart from my family in Australia.  But - it will be much better soon.

Left them and headed home, up the hill.  Fell into bed.  Slept restlessly because I discovered the bottom sheet wrapped around me at one point.  Oops.

Mike has sorted out our windowsill mess

Best solar day so far was yesterday - my birthday!

Up for work.  Busy day before heading off for a fantastic weekend kayaking down the Whanganui river.  Tom, Elly, Callan, Stacey, Theresa (and her friend Claire, whom I do not know - yet!) and me and Mike.  Big group of us.  It's going to be a lot of fun.  And thank you to Janine who will come look after the cats in our absence.

Have a good weekend.  Enjoy your Friday.

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with a walk for Mike after work

 Hi,

Happy birthday to.... me!

Turns out I was a bit slack when it came to taking photos yesterday too.  It's quite the theme for me when I work from home.

After work Mike headed away (I dropped him in Thorndon) for his Meetup walk to Te Ahumairangi hill.  When he got back later in the evening, we chatted to Toby.  Toby took us on another tour of his flat.  And Mike taught him how to open bottle cap tops with a Ventolin.  And so, the baton is passed.

:-o

Made date loaf for the weekend

I did make date loaf though.  Not tried it yet - might have some for my online meeting today at 10am where I can catching up with Barb (and a bit of Juliet) for my birthday.

Yes - happy birthday to me today.  Today is turning it on with the weather.  As it should.

Birthday weather serving up the best.

Mike serving up the best birthday brekkie.

Mike got up early and we ate brekkie before our PT sessions.  Woot!  How he fitted that in, I do not know.  Good on him.

After work we have dinner.  Somewhere.

I hope your day is as good as mine.  :-)

Love,

Angela

The Tuesday with stuff and things

Hi,

Happy birthday to John for today.  A day tinged with sadness for him.  Huge virtual hug headed his way.

Wednesday.  Phew!  Birthday eve for me.

Let's see?  What did Tuesday involve for us?  Day working at home.  I don't recall going anywhere and I stayed home according to my covid app.

Trophies scattered through the house

The pic above of a captured cicada reminds me of Monday afternoon when Smudge captured a moth on the deck and proudly brought it into the house.  Moxley knew she had something and ran over to check it out.  And Smudge totally dropped it for Moxley to play with.  Like she was giving a toy or a mouse to a wee kitten to teach them.

Mike and I both watched this and were amazed at this behaviour.  We thought our two cats were completely antagonistic towards each other.  This (and a few other observations) suggest it is not entirely dysfunctional between them.

Mike did get stuck into the garden after tea though.  Took out three huge black bags of agapanthus.  It looks so much better now.

Dealing to the pest plants

Okay - this is hard

In bed and we struggled to get the word of the day in Wordle.  Turns out it was an ancient Greek word that we seriously do not use in everyday English.  And Mike thinks he is out of sync with the latest version that has migrated to the NYT.

And today's (Wed) one.  So far, scraping in on my last guess

I have tried Worldle.  A geography version of the game.  Tried it twice and managed to get the right country on my last guess.  It is a bit hard.  At least with Guyana I knew it was one of those 3 countries at the top of South America and just had to guess them.  With the African countries, I had no real clue what countries bordered Sierre Leone.  So even guessing that fairly early on didn't really help me.  And once my brain had realised Libya and Liberia were not the same thing - I tried Liberia as I knew it was somewhere there.  And - surprise!

I do not think my luck will hold out.

Up Wednesday for brekkie with James, Celia and Ed.  And today Mike came along.  La Cloche was our place of choice as we all drove in anyway.  Working from home is a thing.

Waiting for the Bacon Butties bunch

Have iced latte - and croissants.

Good to catch up with everyone and hear what has been happening.

It's my birthday tomorrow.  :-)  Have I mentioned that yet?  Hahahah.  Love birthdays.  Love mine more.

Have a great day.

Love,

Angela
