Mt Hutt 2011

For me, the ski week began with an early Saturday morning start.  I was catching a taxi to the airport with Josh, who was flying to Auckland an hour or so before I left for Christchurch.  He was continuing on to Honolulu for a family birthday - slightly different agenda to mine.  I was heading down south to meet Mike and Toby and head inland to Mt Hutt.

I landed in Christchurch and settled in to read for a while but Mike and Toby were only 30 minutes away and I was soon reunited with them.  We drove into the town centre to see the damage from the earthquakes for ourselves.  The capricious nature of natural disasters like this was only too apparent as houses unscathed sat next to houses missing chimneys, walls, roofs, cladding and whatever else.  Roads were often like miniature rollercoaster tracks.

I am not overly familiar with Christchurch tall buildings.  In fact, I have always found it difficult to navigate in Chch with its lack of hills to orient myself.  So there wasn't a lot I could look at and go "Oooohhh - that's missing".  But seeing the big multistory hotel next to the casino obviously derelict was astonishing.  There were huge glass windows shattered and curtains billowing out.  Tourists like us were taking photos from the cyclone fence enclosing the central city area.

We left the centre of the city and went to Hornby Shopping Mall.  Hornby Shopping mall is small, soulless and a little bit depressing - but does its job, there's somewhere to park and all the shops you want.  We seem to spend a lot of time there as we pass through from somewhere to somewhere else. Bit like how I used to spend ages at Chch airport even though I never lived there.  Christchurch is the South Island international hub, and Hornby is the closest mall to the airport, as well as directly between it and the main road North or South.

So, we did the usual things at shopping malls - coffees, Brumbies for Cheesymite scrolls for lunch, Pak'n'Save for the week's grocery shopping.  And haircuts!  Mike and Toby were supposed to get haircuts in Dunedin the previous week, but hadn't.  They slotted themselves in, and the hairdresser even rang them back while we were in the supermarket to bump them up the queue.  They both looked good afterwards, even though Toby insisted on keeping his hair long.

We headed out to Pudding Hill Lodge after that and it was great to be back there once more.  Since we stayed there two years ago it has changed hands.  A couple run it now (Pete and Lesley) and this is their first winter whilst in charge.  We wish them all the best.  We stayed in the same unit (1 UP) as last time and we moved our stuff in on Saturday afternoon, choosing the room that looked out to Mt Hutt.

I texted a friend now living in  Chch and we met him and his friend at the Blue Pub in Methven after he skied that day and had a beer with him.  His name is Sun and used to work at Intergen in Wellington - I met him at the Dynamics User Group.  After a quick catch up with him, we met Christine, John and Tom at the Last Post Cafe for dinner.  We all got pretty big meals, and Christine had too many ribs so I shared them with her - yum!

Back to Pudding Hill and settled in to sleep nice and early for the day skiing on Sunday.  Sunday dawned looking pretty good.  The SnowPhone for Mt Hutt said it was open and expecting snow.  Yay.  Mike, Toby, Christine and I squeezed into the Corolla for the day's skiing.  We got to the bottom of the hill and put the chains on  the car and took off.  Mike immediately started experiencing difficulties getting any sort of traction - the chains we had were pretty useless, and didn't do the job.  I think we managed to make it up a third of the way before a chain finally broke off and started flapping around the wheel arch.  Mike and Christine jerry-rigged a fix so we could creep back down the hill.

Not to be daunted by this, we went into Methven and bought better chains!  We drove through falling, lazy snowflakes and it was beautiful.  Back to the bottom of the hill to meet Mt Hutt staff telling us they had closed the road completely to 2WD vehicles - even with super-duper chains.  Pants!  So...  4WD is ok, is it?  Right!  Back to Pudding Hill to switch to Christine's 4WD vehicle.  Back to Mt Hutt where we were informed by staff that the mountain was now closed to all cars and they were expecting cars coming down from the top.  I think the staff person was bemused at the hilarity in the car that greeted this pronouncement.  After trying twice already, Christine had been joking as we approached the bottom for the third time that we would find it closed completely.  Prescient much, Christine?

Back to Pudding Hill Lodge where we lounged around on the couches in the common area reading.  Well, I think people were reading.  Christine's lap turned out to be quite comfortable for me and I fell asleep sprawled over the couch with my head on her lap, buried in my ski jacket and blankets (I was cold at first).  Who knew that would happen?

One difference between last time we stayed here and this time was that Pete and Lesley were putting on dinners, if you wanted them.  It was good hearty fare and this evening we ate corned beef, potatoes and mustard sauce.

Back to the rooms for a good sleep after the exhausting day battling to get up the hill.  Heheheheh.

Monday morning and the mountain was on hold until 10am.  We decided to chance it, and headed out to Mt Hutt in Christine & John's 4WD to be ready for the update.  Turns out that was a good call, because at 10am the road opened and up we went.  Tom came with us and Toby started his Ski Week class.  Turns out he was the only Ski Week child there.  I think the wind and -7C temperatures had something to do with that!  Checking later we discover that the wind chill brought the temperatures down to -28C.  Talk about cold!  I had so many layers on.  Thermals.  Shirt.  Merino top.  Wind jacket.  Ski jacket.  Scarf.  Mike was missing his gloves and only had his inners (fleecy gloves) to keep his hands warm in these freezing conditions.  He also bought goggles as it was definitely a goggles day with windswept powder whipping up into our faces.  I found spare thermal gloves in my pocket and it stopped frostbite for Mike!
Snow cover was just a little sparse...
There had been a huge dump of snow up and down all of NZ - everywhere, that is, except Mt Hutt.  Satellite photos showed all of NZ being white except for a small sliver of green - exactly in line with Mt Hutt!  Ah well.  We did have beautiful views of the Port Hills covered in snow.  Christchurch, just 100km away, had had half a metre of snow to sea level.

Tussock in the foreground, snowy hills in the background
Funnily enough we spent a lot of time in the cafe during the day.  But I think I should have stayed outside as I was always colder coming back out!

Let's try for nicer weather on Tuesday,eh?

Tuesday we headed up the mountain once more and it was a glorious day.  Blue skies, bit of wind.  Christine experienced ticketing problems today - and they never seemed to be able to sort them out.  They'd all agree it was bad, but no one seemed to be able to fix it.  Christine and Tom got lessons and John was Base Camp in the cafe.  But suddenly at 12:30pm, all the lifts closed and the staff started announcing that we were to head down the hill because high winds were forecast.  Bother!  And I'd been having such a great day!  Well done Mt Hutt staff though - At Mt Lyford everyone ended up stuck at the top of the hill overnight.

Dinner this evening was followed by pavlova and now Toby has a favourite new dessert!  He ate two helpings!

Wednesday the mountain was on-hold for the morning and as John, Christine and Tom had to be away early afternoon, we all had the day off.  We had lunch at the award-winning Dunsandel Store cafe (back on SH1, about 40km south of Chch) and said our goodbyes.  Back to Pudding Hill Lodge for the late afternoon and a relaxing time.

Thursday morning we were up the mountain nice and early but Mike wasn't skiing due to unexpected feverish shivers and a weird cough.  I had the best day skiing despite the snow being hard packed and icy in patches.  I had two lessons (morning and afternoon) and enjoyed my afternoon class with Mike from  Park City, USA. He said that I'm an advanced skier now, not an intermediate one.  Mike the Instructor fixed a recurring problem with my skiing - not enough 'up' as I transition between turns.  One of those 'aha' moments - it made the skiing afterwards a lot more fun!  And I managed two runs with Toby before the lifts shut for the day.
Gorgeous snowcapped hills on the way down the ski road
Friday morning Mt Hutt was shut for the day so we packed the car and headed back a day early.  We did our best to make it to Picton for the 2pm ferry across to Wellington, but it was rapidly obvious that wasn't going to happen - we were about 60 min short.  It wasn't to be but Bluebridge make it so easy for travellers.  They moved us to the 7pm ferry and so we dawdled up the island to Picton.  Snow was still lying around at the top of the South Island in places after the dump they received on Tuesday.  In fact, a lot of the country was smothered in snow - except for Mt Hutt!  We explored Gore Bay (on the coast by Cheviot) and it looked beautiful.  A tiny village on a road to no-where, attached to a beautiful, deserted beach.  And we had lunch at Maungamanu, where Mike's whanau come from - a picnic by the beach, on the road to the graveyard where his ancestors are buried.

Alas, in spite of all this dithering, we still made it to Picton over 2 hours early.  The best that you can say about Picton is it's far nicer than it used to be.  Still, its only purpose is to be somewhere you go when you need to get a ferry.  This used to be actively unpleasant  back in the day; now it's quite nice but still pretty dull, especially after what must be the 20th trip through there.  So we tried to fill in time.  We drove around the town green a few times.  Mike wanted to try to set lap times around it but I wouldn't let him.  And we went to see the Camping Ground where I stayed when I was just 10, and then again with Mike as I moved up from Dunedin to Wellington!  It's a really pleasant camping ground that ticks all the boxes except one slight problem - there's a rail bridge going through and over it that they use to shunt trains for loading the ferries.  At all hours...

Still, eventually there was nothing for it but sit in the check-in queue and read books.  The ferry sailing was uneventful and soon we were home in our beds.  Whew!  A bit of a washout as far as the skiing was concerned, but a great south island holiday nonetheless.

The Thursday with Cubs planning - and dinner

Hi,

I managed to get invited for tea to John and Christine's place.  What a great score for a single woman left to fend for herself, eh?  Heheheh.  Well, actually, I did leave Josh to fend for himself - and he did admirably with yummy rye bread and scrumptious toppings.  I got sausages and chicken salad - and it was very good.

I had a quick catch-up with Christine as well (she came home after riding her horse) and then left for the Cubs planning session. Mike has volunteered to run every evening in his absence!  Hah!  Just kidding.  It all went well and I was home by 9:45pm!

Fell asleep and slept soundly with the electric blanket on 3 all night.  It is a southerly!  Brrrr.

Last day at work for a week!  Off to the ski holiday - and it is dumping snow.  Hooray!  While I'm away it is my sisters' birthdays.  Yes - all of them!  Happy birthday Shona, Sharon and Karen.  I'll be thinking of you all.  Have a great day!

I'm off with Josh tomorrow morning to the airport (he's flying to Hawaii and I am flying to Christchurch - incongruous or what?).  Josh wants to wear shorts onto the plane - I want to wear my ski jacket!  Heheheheh.

Have a great week!

Angela

The Wednesday with Transformers 3 - Dark of the Moon

Hi,

Spent close to three hours watching Transformers 3 last night.  Not too sure it was worthy of that amount of my life, but there you go.  The special effects were great, but the editing was pants!  And at almost three hours long I am sure they could have edited a bit more!  How many of us really wanted to see close ups of elephants and zebras?  Maybe the director secretly pines after being a nature documentary maker?

Anyhow, the company was great (Fran and Josh) and it was in the Gold Lounge.  I ordered a cheese board and I have to say it was pretty good.  Better than Sally and Andrew's experience in the Hutt with re-heated frozen pizzas and fish fingers!  Eating in the dark with 3D glasses on is tricky!  I spent a bit of time watching blurry scenes as I munched through brie and blue cheeses.

Wandered home on the bus and it was already very late.  Spoke to Toby on the phone for ages.  He was quite talkative.  Perhaps absence is making his heart fonder?  I'll see them on Saturday!

Last night Otago beat Auckland in Auckland (at Eden Park) in the NPC ITM Cup competition - for the first time since 1976!  1976!  Jeepers.  Josh may have wondered what was going on at the hoot I let out.  Unfortunately Transformers 3 got in the way and all I caught as I nipped down to turn on the TV to watch it, was the whistle blowing at full time!  But I basked in the glory of the after match interviews!

I plan to watch the All Black game on Friday night (with or without Josh - he has to deliver Moby (their car) back up to Waikanae) and shout a lot.

Have a great day!

Angela

The Tuesday with dinner out

Hi,

Josh and I met up with Sally and Andrew for a meal at The Royal - the pub right next to my work.  Tuesdays are two-for-one mains and it made for a cheap meal out.  $80 for the four of us.  Can't beat that.  And the steak was perfectly fine fare.

Josh and I caught the bus home (we only had to wait for two minutes so it was great timing) and sorted out Toby's room for him.  The wardrobes are done and look great!  Shame I don't have any time at home before I leave on Saturday morning to get them sorted!

Tonight we're off to see Transformers 3 in 3D.  Then home to finish packing for the ski week (I need to drop off a bag to John and Christine containing my ski boots and helmet as I don't want to have it with me when I wait for hours at Christchurch airport).

Thursday night is Cub planning night for term 3.  That should fill up most of the evening as it generally takes a wee while.

Time to get stuck into work.  I think Toby and Mike may have visited the book bus yesterday!  Good fun!  Toby loves that!

Angela

The Monday with no Mike or Toby

Hi,

Monday went super fast.  I rode home and tidied up a bit for the wardrobe people coming today!  Yay!  They should finish it today and after dinner tonight I can start some putting away.

Josh comes to stay tonight for a few nights.  His house is getting its floor sanded so there is nowhere for him to sleep!  Heheheh.

Caught up with Sally and Andrew for lunch yesterday.  Sally and Andrew also caught up with each other (I had Andrew away from their house on Sunday during Sally's waking hours).

Mike and Toby are in Dunedin!  Sounds like they had fun getting there.

Hope your day is superb!

Angela

The weekend with tidying and skiing and ferry trips

Hi,

What an action-packed weekend.  Marvellous fun.  Friday night I went to NZTE to have a few drinks with people for Mike's last day.  Turns out Mike was in the middle of a support call at 5pm on his last day.  Heheheheh.  Will they miss him much?  I stayed for a few drinks (I had a nice cup of tea) and then drove home.  Why was the car in town?  Yes, well, Mike forgot to leave the key out for the carpet layers and had to taxi home to sort it out.  Then drove back.

So I drove home and got Toby and we had a good evening watching TV, playing Wii and reading.  Mike wasn't home too late either.  And the carpet was laid in Toby's new bedroom.  Excitement of excitements!

Saturday I made the boys breakfast and started tidying.  Mike took Vivienne's rubbish to the tip and I was still tidying.  But by the end of the day, the house was pretty clean, our new bedroom was looking good as was Toby's and the washing machine had been going flat out.

We packed up for the ski week and Mike and Toby's week down south and fell into bed!  I got up at 3am, and got into my ski gear, kissed the boys (at least Mike made a show at waking up, unlike Toby who barely twitched) and drove to collect Andrew.  We made great time up to Whakapapa (4 hours - Andrew drives well!) and we were skiing by 9:30am.  We got some great runs in.  The wind was fierce in the morning and my face went numb with the razor-sharp airborne powder being blown off Turoa on the other side of Ruapehu!  But it meant we had wind-blown powder and Andrew and I had a ball all day!

Mike and Toby got onto their ferry, watched a movie and ate breakfast.  They drove to Methven and stayed at Pudding Hill Lodge.  Next stop today - Dunedin!

Busy week for me.  Social events (two movies and a breakfast already), probably a Cub planning session, the wardrobe people come tomorrow and Josh moves in for the rest of the week while his family head earlier to Hawaii!  Phew!  Best squeeze in a haircut somewhere there too.

Have a great week!

Angela

The Thursday with dinner out on the town

Hi,

After the user group meeting, I met Sally, Andrew and Mike for a dinner out on the town.  Mike had arranged for Hannah to come and babysit Toby and we were off.  We went to Soi (around in Evans Bay) and it was very nice.  I'd like to have brunch there one day on a still, crisp morning.  It is set over the water so it would be an amazing view.  Andrew has a theory that amazing views negates the need for excellent food but Soi was bucking the trend in his assessments!

I rode in this morning and it is a beautiful morning.  The trouble is I still have my summer fingerless gloves on.  I haven't found my winter ones as yet.  And after less than one kilometre from home I could hardly feel my fingers.  Braking down the hill was by judging how much the bike slowed down, as the feedback from brake lever pressure was non-existent.

My fingers ached at work as the blood started circulating once more.  But now they are tingling with that wonderful buzzing feeling.  Nice.  Oh - I just noticed a huge bruise on my middle finger on my left hand.  It's massive.  Wonder what happened when they were numb?  I can hardly straighten it now.  Lucky it wasn't my ring finger.

Toby's last day for the term today.  Then he and Mike are off to Dunedin on Sunday.  I am hoping to head up to Ruapehu for a ski day on Sunday with Andrew.  We have a tentative plan and the weather looks good.  Can't wait.  It has been snowing all week up there.  Bring that on!

Mike's last day at work today too.  Oooooo.  Exciting for him.  I hope he has a wonderful day.

Have a great weekend.

Angela

Graffiti in Wadestown/Northland

As a member of the Wadestown Residents Committee I hate graffiti.  It's a blight on our fine suburb.

But as a private individual, I really like this alien family:

... this is a recurring theme of art that brightens up the run-down garages and bare walls in the neighbourhood.

And I know exactly what this person is coming from, too:

The Wednesday with karate

Hi,

What a great evening.  Well, for me and Toby.  Mike collected Toby and fed him and took him to karate.  I went home and started tea.  Mike arrived and kept me company until I left to pick up Toby and Mike left to go to tramping club night (followed by hours and hours at work - hey, it's his last week there!).  I knew the "it'll only take 30 minutes to sort it out" would be a stretch.

Tonight (Thursday) is user group night and should be a good one (come and see it, anyone keen on CRM).  Then, Mike is taking me out for dinner.  I am looking forward to that.  Soi, down in Evans Bay.  Should be great fun.  Hannah will look after Toby tonight.  Toby always likes Hannah to babysit him.  I wonder if I can convince her to do some maths with him?

I took the bus in because of the after work activities - that and the strong gusty winds.  The gusts even woke me up last night again.  I think our bedroom at the back of the house used to protect us from them!  This room is a little more exposed.

Have a great day!

Angela

The Tuesday with Cubs

Hi,

How amazing was our friend John talking to the Cubs last night?  Every Cubs was totally absorbed by John's presentation.  John went through the different uniforms he had, he told them about places he'd visited and answered their many and varied questions.  What an amazing fellow.  I will ask him back next year for sure!

Before Cubs we scoffed down pizzas at the Sampson house.  Gourmet dinners were noted by their absence.  In fact, because their schools are all off on holiday already, I think we're lucky we got thought of at all.

Tonight is karate night and Mike will take Toby to that.  I took the bus in this morning due to the persistent rain.  So soft, am I not?

Toby has asked us to attend assembly today at 2pm, so Mike drove in and will collect me.  We'll both take a late lunch break.  Should work out ok.

Hope you all have a good day!
Love,
Angela

It's cubs night tonight!

Me again, Angela is under the pump.  You can see the change in work at her new job, by the lack of time to do a quick blog entry!

I don't really know what went on at home last night - because straight after dinner I headed out to Vivienne's and they helped me sort out my Linux box.  It's a laptop that we use at Tramping Club as a sandbox for our website.  I needed to change file permissions on it - John set me straight just how to do it.  All good.  Thanks John!

But then I stayed very late, er, very early, talking about the philosophy of open source vs capitalism and all sorts of other things.  To the point where I ended up crashing on their sofa for the night.  It was very comfy and I had a fantastic sleep, John woke me up at about 7:15 which meant I could race back just in time for Angela to leave for work!

In spite of that slightly unusual start to the morning it all went like clockwork.  I dropped Toby off at school and drove in so we can get away quick-sharp for the Cubs logistics.  Lesley is cooking us a 'gourmet meal' tonight!  Hooray!

The weekend with social engagements and a bit of painting

Hi,

Mike finished the wardrobe interior painting.  Hooray!  The carpet people can come today (Monday) and finish Toby's room.  If we're lucky.

Friday evening was a movie night at home and we watched "The Iron Giant" and it was great fun.  A Cold War setting about a boy that befriends a scary huge robot.  Saturday there was no swimming (school holidays have started for the private schools and Huia Pool has maintenance) so Mike painted while I read that book I wanted to finish.

Toby went to play with Jack in the afternoon and that turned into a movie in the evening too (Kung Fu Panda 2).  We watched some TV and completely forgot about John and Tom arriving for tea until they knocked on the door.  Oops.  A quick Burger Wisconsin trip sorted that huge oversight out.

Sunday was Yum Cha in the morning (with Tabors and Jack and John) while Mike did a rubbish tip trip with various bits and pieces scattered around the neighbourhood (he put it out on Facebook that he didn't have enough for a trailerload and did anyone else have some rubbish - he was inundated).

Then I dropped Toby off at Kieran's house for a playdate, and caught up with the whanau at 40WLW.  Very pleasant afternoon.  Also caught up with Mike there briefly.

Back to have a nice cuppa with Kieran's parents and then off to see Mike and Karen for tea at their place.

Phew!  Hectic.

The week looms large ahead.  Got lots to get stuck into.  Hope your week goes well too.
Love,
Angela

The Thursday with a new tyre

Hi,

I am so pleased - Mike bought a new tyre for me yesterday and fitted it too.  So I rode in this morning, despite the drizzly cold rain.  It actually stopped raining by the time I got into town, but I can't say I dried out any.  It's going to be unpleasant pulling my wet gear on for the ride home.  Thanks Mike.

Of course, the test will be when I get to the bike shed after work and check the pressure.  It is always ok until I ride it somewhere.  I have my fingers crossed.

It's Friday.  Got swimming tomorrow and some painting (goes without saying at the moment).  But I think that is it for this weekend.  I want to read.  Aidan T has given me an intriguing book set in 1171 in England and I am hooked.  Murder mystery stuff.  But the writing style is unusual - I'd let you know the name of it, but I have forgotten.  Something about the art of death I think.

So, I still keep my twenty year old bike.  $35 for a tyre is a lot cheaper than $1000 for a new bike.  I am envious when I move other bikes in the bike shed around and they weigh nothing compared to my steel re-enforced machine!

Have a great weekend.
Love,
Angela

An evening off!

I didn't do any painting last night, since the carpet layer's not coming today.  We'll knock it off Saturday morning I reckon.

So that meant that we had a totally evening unusual activity - nothing.  Or, just getting the normal stuff done.

Angela had to work slightly late so I grabbed Toby and made dinner.  Spag Bol was Toby's request and I was happy to oblige.  I helped him with his maths homework before dinner, that went well.  I think he is getting it.  He just needs to know that he is getting it and he'll be fine!

Then we fixed Angela's bike.  It's getting a flat tyre every day, so I'm trying a new tyre.  We'll see how that goes.

I got a call from Sue the WTMC Ruapehu Lodge person, we talked about the lodge - food, menus, food ordering, web presence, attracting families - for over an hour.  By that time everyone else was in bed asleep!  So I crawled into bed without waking everyone (I hope).

This morning was good, you can tell that cos I made it in by bus.  Thank goodness it's Friday!!

Welcome back Angela!

Angela has blogged today!  Yay! She must be getting relaxed at her new work now.

She'll be pleased to know that I've bought her a new tyre at lunch time.  That should fix her flat tyre problems - I hope!

One thing we both forgot to mention about yesterday - it was karate night, and we left Toby at karate by himself for the very first time ever!  He took it all in his stride though.

The Wednesday with karate and painting

Hi,

How do we know when the days of the week change?  The only constant at the moment seems to be painting.  "What day is it?"  "Doesn't matter - we're painting".  Nice.

Anyhow, yesterday was a normal Wednesday for the most part.  Mike did get lots of flooring work done in preparation for the carpet layers tomorrow (Friday) and spent the evening in the closet.  Well, in 4 closets.  He is determined to get them painted before carpet is laid.

This might be easier than he thought as I got a call from the carpet people saying the carpet has been delayed.  Oh dear.  That is a good way to see Mike grumpy.

My bike's back tyre is flat - again.  I am getting a bit frustrated with it - so much so that I nearly bought a new bike this week!  The shop had run out of stock, otherwise I might very well have that new bike.  Now the plan is to buy a new tyre and try that.  Hopefully I can ride all next week.  Otherwise, I will go down and buy the first suitable bike I find!

Time to go and forage for lunch.  I never made any sandwiches today!  Slack.

Love,
Angela

What a surprise! The carpet's not ready

Yesterday was another epic reno day.  I got floor leveling compound down, and got the first coat of paint onto the wardrobes.  Was all set to push through and get the second coat on too - but I was working faster on the second coat and discovered that I was too early for re-coating.  So had to stop.  I've had to take all the white wine out of the fridge to fit the paint roller and paint tray in!

So with another hour's work tonight, we'll be all ready for the carpet layer on Friday.

Except that he isn't coming.

The carpet people rang and said that the carpet wasn't in yet.  Grump grump grump!  So our plans to finally sort our house in the weekend won't happen.  We'll still be able to move Toby into his room, on a temporary basis though.  Just a bed and bedside table.

I was late to bed so pretty groggy this morning - ended up late enough that I had to drive in.  This is getting to be a habit!

Earthquakes, cubs and renovations

We had an earthquake here at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, which created a bit of chatter in the office.  In my building, the Majestic Centre, we got gentle swaying for about 20 sec or so.  Angela got a sway, a jolt and a sway.  I think the damping in the Majestic Centre works better.

I skived off cubs last night - more renovations.  I was leveling the floor in Toby's room ready for the carpetlayer on Friday.  Sounds like cubs went pretty well.  Toby has come back with a pat of butter that he made all by himself.

Again, a good morning from both of us this morning.  I got Toby off relatively early and got an early bus in.  I had mission only partly accomplished last night, because I ran out of cement.  So I did an early morning trip to Bunnings and lugged 25kg of cement back to the office in my tramping backpack.  I feel more awake than most mornings now!

Tonight I finish leveling the floor, and paint the insides of the cupboards.  Then we'll be ready for carpet on Friday and finally - finally! - being able to move into all of our rooms in the weekend.

Toby's parent teacher interview

We had Toby's parent teacher interview last night.  His last school report wasn't fantastic - he's slipped for concentration, initiative and leadership.  Conclusion was he just needs to 'knuckle down'.  Time to bring in beatings and imposing unachievable expectations on him I reckon.  OK, let's start with less computer games.

We had a good morning this morning, Toby was up and showered and dressed and breakfasted like clockwork.  Got away fairly early - we drove in so that Cubs logistics can work.  I'm missing cubs tonight, I have to get some concrete laid on Toby's bedroom floor because the carpet layer is allegedly coming on Friday!

Parked in the usual parking building, which has very tight parks, especially later in the morning (like 8:20am).  I've quite often got to wedge the car in so that I have to slide across to the passenger seat and go out the passenger door.  But today was a first - it was so tight a space that I had to climb out the BACK left seat!  It's good I still have some flexibility ay.

Another epic painting weekend

This weekend we more or less just painted.  Angela was very good, she turned down many social engagements and gamely painted away.

We make a good team - I can do the labouring jobs that require height, like rollering the tops of the walls, and Angela can do the jobs that require skill and coordination, like cutting in the paint on the skirtings and scotias.  Though Toby's room has a LOT of doors and windows, and I think she was well over cutting in by the end of it.

We did get through all of the painting though.  Toby's room is now virulent orange and ready for carpet (er, once I re-concrete the floor in one corner).  It took absolutely ages!  We were starting from where the plasterer left off, so undercoat, filling, and topcoating everything.  All those doors and windows had fiddly architraves to put aqua-enamel on.  We also had some aqua-enameling in our bedroom and the foyer to hit at the same time.

If we have time, we'll move him in there tonight!  Not properly, because there's still the carpet to do, but the room is certainly useable for putting in a single bed and bedside table.  He'll be happy.  We certainly will be!

This morning was okay, but I missed my bus and had to drive in.  Re-fitting window catches in Toby's room took just a little bit longer than I expected...

Have a great day everyone!
