The Tuesday away sick

Hi,

Although Andrew thinks he has made me sick, I am not super sure it is the same.  My sinuses and headaches seem to threatened to go to town - but nothing happened.  However, I have had no appetite.  Hardly eaten anything since Sunday lunch.  Totally weird.

At work today - will see how I go.  I did run across the road at one point coming to work and felt light headed.

Dehydrated - that is what I think.

Anyway.  Stayed at home yesterday.  In bed.  Toby was also sick - with a migraine.  Mike thinks he is getting sick.

The House of Pestilence.  That is us.

Cats seem fine.

Hahah.

Right.  Time for the day to kick in even more.  Take care.

Love,
Angela

The weekend in Wanaka

Hi,

The long weekend away with Andrew for our now-routine-annual ski trip was superb.  Andrew got the car Wof'ed on Thursday and collected Sally and then me from work on the way to the airport.  We checked in and went to find some tea.  And Andrew found his cousin Dot in the same cafe waiting for her flight to AKL.  We all chatted for a bit before Dot went to catch her flight home.  And then Sally left us to negotiate the security process for our flight.

Nice big plane down to Queenstown.  Was a little late leaving Wellington.  But we got to Queenstown around 8pm or so.  Picked up the gear from the carousel and Andrew legged it to Apex to pick up the car.  After he drove around the airport car park trying to find a way into where I stood, we loaded the car up and set off.

To the supermarket 300m away.  Provisions for the weekend.  :-)  Wraps.  Dips.  Cheese.  Chocolate.  Ginger beer.  You know...

RAV4.  Hmmm.  I like it.  But seriously?  What's with the headlights?  They cut off about halfway up the road so you can't see directly ahead.  Great side action though - so I can see anything about to T-bone us way better than any other car I have driven.

Fortunately Andrew drove with his headlights on beam for the most part and lit up the road ahead like a beacon.

We had to drive without music at the start because the RAV4 won't let you add a new phone to Bluetooth to the radio unless you are stationary.

Passengers are obviously just chopped liver.

Andrew wasn't happy listening to me improvise and sing.  Especially as I barely remember any lyrics.  Painful.

Hahahah.

Rang the accommodation (Lake Wanaka Lodge) at 9:05pm as we drove out of Queenstown to say we would be later than anticipated due to the late arrival of the aircraft.  But he kindly said he would stay up until 10.30.

But Andrew drove like the wind and we were at the accommodation by 10:05pm.  Oosshh!  Checked in, and fell into bed.  Booked our lift passes from their website before we fell into a coma.  Jetlag.  Sure.

Nice room.  Two single beds.  Decent bathroom.  Nice and tidy and clean.  No cutlery or crockery besides two cups and two glasses and two teaspoons.  Up early to get ready and head up to Treble Cone.  Brekkie.  Muesli and milk.  In a teacup with a teaspoon.  Left by 7.20am.  In the carpark by 8.05am.  Still before sunrise.

Second row of parked cars on Friday morning.  So close.

Sunrise from Treble Cone car park

Proof I was there too

Andrew got gear sorted.  And then the lifts opened at 9am.  I love Treble Cone.  The staff are so friendly.  There are no crowds.  We skied onto every lift.  Possibly we had to "queue" behind someone else twice.  But even then we could have out-muscled them in the dash for the front of the "queue" if we wanted.

First run of the season

Prime parking spot

We went straight to the Saddle.  And I found a great run down Raffles.  Which I did over and over for the next two days.  Andrew made me try other things.  But the snow wasn't great for me.  And my skis prefer wide open spaces.  Icy moguls are not fun for these skis.

Top of the world!

Let's do this!
I had one epic crash.  Which I still can't quite figure out.   Down a mogul slope.  Quite steep.  Bit firm.  Down into a "valley" between moguls and I sat back and must have pinged off my binding.  My head snapped back onto the snow and I was surprised to see my left ski slide down the slope.  Without its brake engaged.  I had visions of it not stopping until it hit the lift queue.  Which was devoid of people.  But, far away!

Incredibly it stopped 2m below me.  Held to the slope by icy, watery molecules.  And the slight effects of gravity.  Which, as I stood up to try and step down to my ski, did not help me.  My left foot could not get a purchase on the ice.  My right ski just managed it.  So I was moving my ski down 5cm at a time.  And hoping my left foot did not skate out and send me into my left ski, hanging on the slope.  A slight nudge and it would be off down the hill.

Andrew saw me, and discarded his skis and started up the hill.

A lovely woman stopped and asked if I needed help.  She rescued my ski.  Thank goodness.  I tried to stand up, and nearly fell and took her out.

Wooaaahhh!  Scary.  Hahahah.

Got out of my other ski and she handed both to Andrew and I slid down to a easier spot.  And gratefully got back in my skis.  OMG.

Not a lot of snow this season
We barely stopped all day.  Ate lunch at the top of the saddle.  Wraps were great.  Fruit.  Peanut slabs.  Mmmm.

Wandered back to base after the last saddle chairlift around 3.20pm.  The artificial snow on the easy route was so heavy.  Like thick porridge.  My skis cut through it.  But it was hard work.

Into the car and off down the hill to Wanaka.  Showered and found dinner.  The Spice Room.  Indian food.  Very nice.

Home to bed.  Andrew watched TV. Did not keep me awake. I would have been asleep by 8.20pm.

Up next morning.  Andrew was full of an impending cold.  Oops.  We drove up to Treble.  Away again at 7.20am but oddly for a Saturday, we were in the first line of parked cars.  Primo location.

Sat in the cafe waiting for sunrise and the lifts to open at 9am.  Andrew got a lesson for 10.30am.  He left me to ski Raffles happily until 12.30 when we were to meet at the base cafe.

Skis on cord!

Day time
Away from Treble by 3.45pm and back in Wanaka for a shower.  Andrew took to his bed and I went out to meet Matt and Leanne to eat dinner and watch the rugby.

On the way, in the dark, I met an older man on the corner of our road looking lost.  With a bottle of wine in his hand.  So I asked if I could help.  He said he had just left his house, turned right twice, then left and bought the wine.  And had now spent 1.5 hours walking around trying to find his house.

So I asked if he knew the address and we could find it on my phone.  Nope.  Did he know the phone number?  Nope.  Anyone he is staying with - their phone?  Nope.  Ok.  Name of the owners of the house?  Wait...  Wilson something on the letterbox.  Ok.  Google turned up nothing useful there.

He decided to go back to the ski rental place they had used that morning because his mates hired skis there and maybe they have the address.  Poor guy.

Anyway, - rugby!  All Blacks v South Africa at Westpac Stadium.

OMG.  A draw.  What a scrappy game.

Nice food at Waterbar.  Charred broccoli and haloumi fries.

We caught up with each others news and photos.  Cardrona also needs snow.  They dropped me back at our accommodation.  I slept like the dead.

Totally not sore at all.  Exhausted at the end of each day.  Then, next day...  Can't even tell.  My PT is amazing!

Woke up early Sunday and packed the car - kinda.  Took off for Arrowtown.  2C over Crown Range road - but no sign of ice.

Popped into the Arrowtown bakery and I had a second brekkie.

Arrowtown iced coffee

Then around 9am we headed through Queenstown to Glenorchy.  And then onwards to Paradise and even further (what is beyond Paradise anyway???) to the start/end of the Routeburn track.

Routeburn track

My feet on the Routeburn

Swingbridge on Routeburn track

Those colours!  There was a huge trout in there too.

Beautiful

From there, we drove back to Paradise, then for ages up another dirt road to the start of the Dart track (Rees Dart is a tramp I have wanted to do since I was about 14).

Start of Dart track

Got back to Queenstown with 15 km range left in the tank.  Andrew filled up and swears there must have been 3 or 4 litres left as he could only squeeze in 46 litres of petrol.

15 km range left in the tank

Tried The Boat Shed between Frankton and Queenstown (at the marina).  Yummy food!

Iced coffee @ The Boat Shed - guess where?

Now I know.
And dropped the car off.  Got a stone flick up from a car on Saturday afternoon (KPH 319) and chipped our windscreen.  So I took a pic and pointed it out.  We had full insurance so we were all good.  Phew!

Andrew had checked the luggage by the time I walked back to the terminal from Apex.  And we sat and waited for our flight.  He found his pocketknife in his carry on luggage and went to chat to the Air NZ ground staff.  They were so nice - they took his knife and put it into his suitcase for him.  So helpful.

The airport was chaos.  Sydney and Brisbane flights leaving.  Security screening so slow.  Our board said "Relax" to our flight.  And the announcements were just directing flights one by one to screening.  And telling others to relax.

But it was madness.  We queued for security screening with the Sydney flight - separated by the webbing crowd control.  Our domestic screening seemed to go much faster.

Boarded late.  Got away late.  But had an easy flight home.  Sally met us and took me home.  Yay!

Got in to an empty house.  Sorted out the cats (fed them and cleaned their dirt trays), put on a wash, picked up Toby's clothes from his bedroom for washing, put away laundry, emptied my gear and aired it.  Then got a call from Mike asking for a pick up from Melling.  So jumped in the car and did that.  And collected Toby on the way home from Tessa's house.

Into bed and off to sleep...

What a weekend.  Thank you Andrew.  Thanks Sally and Mike for letting us go.

Mike had a blast up at Whakapapa.  Said the Sky Waka was a gamechanger.  Can't wait to see that for myself.

We need more snow!

Apparently it is coming.

Have a great week.

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with only one spin class

Hi,

I know - shocking.  Only one spin class done in the day.  I'll never join the breakaway group ahead of the peloton now.  Doh!

Etape 2 - I made it up a place.  Still off the podium.  But - second equal I guess.

Guess I was doing ok until life and work got more in the way.  :-)  Chris, Sarah and Karen have been going to more than me since then though.

Iced latte @ The Lab

Got away for a coffee with Edina for work.  Woot!

Edina took an awesome pic!

Birthday milk!
 Found birthday milk.  Yay Karen!

Toby was sick yesterday - this is his comfort dinner

Toby was sick yesterday so when I got home, I made him some toast and fruit.  And maybe I bought him his favourite biscuits to make him happy.  Tim Tams.

Hope he is much better today.

I packed for the ski weekend.  Shoved it all in the car.  Dropped my clothes and boots off at Sally and Andrew's place.  I hope that fits in.  Gulp!  Dropped my skis at work and took my road bike home.

Hahahah.

Someone is messing with me.  When I went to get my bike, they had moved it again.  This time I know there were no work reasons for it.

My beautiful bike is getting handled by strangers!

So I took it home.  It's safe now.

Crazy day at work.  Then catch Uber or bus to the airport - find Andrew.  Board plane.  Land in Queenstown.  Find rental car.  Buy provisions.  Drive to unknown accommodation in Wanaka (I need to check that).  Ski hard for two days.  Hopefully catch rugby game Saturday night.   Tramp hard Sunday morning.  Pour myself onto flight Sunday afternoon.

And try to recover from trying to keep up with Andrew.

Lost cause already.  Hahahah.

Mike is off skiing too.  Toby is looking after the cats.

Enjoy your weekend.  See you Monday.

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday with not a lot

Hi,

What a crazy day yesterday.  Boxing was such hard work -my biceps were feeling it.  I had a meeting where the sales person (Laura) provided an iced latte for me (and coffees for everyone else).  With giant donuts!

Work delivered me an iced latte for a meeting - ta Laura!

Also came with crazy looking donuts!

Had Mike ping me during the day that we had parent teacher interviews.  OMG.  I had forgotten.  Left in a hurry at 1600 and walked to the school and got there with 4.5 minutes to spare.  Saw three teachers.  Mike arrived as I started the second one.

Oosshh!

Walked back to Courtney Place and bussed home.

Protesters climbed the next door building

Saw protesters climbing the Majestic Centre next to work today too.  Oil protesters.

Iced latte goodness @ Machete this morning

Had tea (Mike cooked it) and fell into bed.  Slept so well.  Slept in to 5.30am.  So nice.  Fave spin instructor this morning.  Went hard.

Sorted out ski details.  Woot!

Bring it all on!

Love,
Angela

The Monday that left like a Thursday by the end of it

Hi,

Hahahah - my Monday was so long it felt like it was 4 days.  This morning when I woke (Tues @ 4.40am), I was lying there, thinking how nice it was that it was Friday.

Then reality kicked in.  OMG.  It's only Tuesday?

Anyway, Monday was ok, despite the time dilation effect.  Arthur was in town, so had brekkie with him and then the team went out for a coffee late in the day.

Mojo iced latte
Went to Spin after work.  Bussed home after getting groceries.  Cooked tea - chicken fajitas for Toby.  Bean ones for me.

Fell into bed.  Hit a coma-like state within minutes of turning out my light.  Woke 10 mins before my alarm went off.  Can't even blame the cat as she was nowhere to be seen.

Tuesday morning selfie

Kaustubh is converted to iced lattes

Cheers!

Walked in.  Went to boxing.  Walked to Mojo and met Mike and Roanne for brekkie.  Walked back - bumped into the boxing instructor (except she didn't see us) as she powered her way to work.

And today is gorgeousness out there.  5C.  Crisp and clear.

Have a brilliant day!

Angela

The weekend with Mike away tramping

Hi,

Go Silver Ferns!  World Cup champs.  Oosshh!

What a weekend.  We have a house and a huge mortgage, so every time I spent money, I panicked.  Hahahah.  I need to do a budget with Mike.

I did get an iced latte date in with Mary (from work).  And we almost forgot to take a pic.  Jeepers!

Almost forgot - iced latte with Mary

Had a fizzy drink at work - which I never do - so took a pic for Toby.  Went out for drinks with Jeremy - but left there before Celia caught up with us all.  :-(  Boo.  I missed karaoke with her.

Did go to Higher Taste with Sally and Andrew though!  That was good.  And Mike collected us all - and I dropped them off home (Mike and Toby) and then took Sally and Andrew home.

It was a Gilbert plan.  But it worked.  I like driving.

For Toby

Saturday saw me away for my appointments and Mike getting ready for his tramp to Powell Hut.  Only been opened a week (refurbished).

The rest of Saturday saw me and Toby relaxing (with laundry).

Iced coffee with Toby and Tessa @ Joe's Garage

Tessa and her iced chocolate

Sunday saw Tessa around at our house, so we went out for late afternoon tea.  Tried Yum Cha but they were all closed by then.

Joe's Garage it was.  And it was good.  Mmmm.  We popped into Te Papa and wandered around the new Taiao exhibit.  It is so well done.  I loved it.  Mike actually got back from his tramp and joined us for a little bit of the look around.

Back home and relaxed.  Took Tessa home at 7.30pm and then Toby wanted tea cooked.  Hahahah.  I hope he remembers his lunch (leftover chicken schnitzels in a roll - with sliced tomato on the side so he can slip it in at the last moment and not make his roll soggy).

It's ski week!  Woot!  And bucketing down snow down south.  Yes!

Have an awesome week.

Love,
Angela

The Thursday with a bike ride after work

Hi,

Yesterday was great.  Went to PT session (after walking in).  Did tweak a muscle in my back with my last lift.  Doh!

Caught up with Mike for brekkie where he took a pic of me.  Sort of.

You taking a pic?

What are you doing?  Why is it taking so long?

I am not convinced you are taking my photo

Ahhh - a selfie

Went to lunch spin.  Left work at 5pm and went to ride around the bays with Sarah (spin instructor) and her friend, Jay.  Jay has legs of steel, but I kept up.  Oosshh!   1.5 hours later, we were back at the Freyberg pool.

Our route was around the bay to Cobham Drive (busy - Mt Vic tunnel was shut due to an accident) then into Kilbirnie.  Past the shopping centre there, below the airport and around Breaker Bay.  Seatoun.  Around the far point (decided against going up into the hills) and back along Cobham Drive to the pool.

Said thanks and goodbye then headed back to work.  Switched to a bus.  Got home to tea from Mike already cooked.  Tessa and Toby tucked into the rice and meatballs.

Represent!  Iced latte with Celia and Andrew

Slept like the dead.  Seriously.  Dead.  Woke to see the Silver Ferns lost narrowly to the Aussie Diamonds by 1 point.  Oosshh!  Bodes well for the semis if you ask me.

Go Silver Ferns!

Enjoy your day.  Friday.  Woot.

Weekend beckons.  Mike is away tramping.  I have Saturday appointments.  Then I intend to relax lots.

Enjoy your weekend.

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with lawyer stuff

Hi,

Today is settlement day!  OMG.  I feel like an indentured servant again.  A huge mortgage and dwindling life expectancy years left.  A mortgage in my 30s seemed so much manageable.  I'd better work like a mad woman to get it paid off early as possible.  Hahahah.

Yippee.  Very happy and excited.

Mike and I spent an hour signing things at the lawyer's office yesterday.  Yep.

Mt Vic looked great from my office yesterday.

I went home after work and spin and cooked tea for Toby.  He wanted chicken schnitzels (his fave) but we had no chicken.  He got fish fingers, rice, tomatoes and fruit (kiwifruit and mandarins).  He seemed very appreciative even though it wasn't his preferred choice.

Mike went to a seminar on something.  Possibly leadership or motivational stuff.  Not sure.  But he learned a whole heap of things around making changes in his life to see goals come to fruition.

Nice.

Had a great sleep to make up for the Toby-surprised-Star-Wars-laser-fights-storm-interrupted sleep the night before.  Up early to walk in.  Tried my new shoes for Nepal - they seem awesome.  And my new pants for walking.  They may be a tad warm for hot, humid Nepal.  High altitude Nepal - they should be all good.

PT session this morning.  Lifted 60kg.  But poor form.  So back to 55kg to get form right.  Sigh.

And - time for brekkie soon with Mike.

Woot!

Have a great day!

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday with Toby home!!

Hi,

So excited - so confused.  Toby tricked us.  He said he was coming home today (Wednesday) and then once I was asleep last night, he and Mike hatched a plan.  Mike found out Toby was already in Wellington and coming home.  So they kept it from me until 11.30pm when Toby came into the house.

I was so confused.

Especially after dreaming that weird dream about Star Wars.  Set in an old house.  With Stormtroopers, Han Solo and Darth Vader - and me!

My night was really weird.

My lunch

Anyway, Tuesday was good.  Grabbed some lunch.  Worked.  Went to Spin after work.  Got home to a cooked tea from Mike.

Yeah!  I am #winning.
My dinner - courtesy of Mike

Reminder of past date night with Celia

Toby came home.  I am happy.

Got up and went to Spin.  Fave instructor day.  Went hard.  Feel dead now.

Seeing lawyer with Mike today.  Settlement is tomorrow.  Ooohhhh.

Big day.

Have a good one,

Love,
Angela

The Monday back at work

Hi,

Is it really only Tuesday?  I am so convinced it is already Wednesday.  Sigh.  Let's see.  What did I do yesterday when it was Monday?

Came to work.  Powered through the morning.  Hit a wall at lunchtime and never recovered.  Not a wall as in "hit the wall" and can't work anymore.  More like a wall that you keep hitting your forehead on and not really making any headway.

Happens, I guess.  Luckily not too often.

But I got to Spin after work and saw the leaderboard.  Oosshh.  In 5th spot.  But those nutters ahead of me are going to almost every Spin class.  Not sure I can reel them in.  Told Sarah (top of the board) we should make a breakaway group and bust loose from the pelaton and get out in front.  But it doesn't really work like a real bike ride.  Hahahah.

Moxley

Grooming on my lap

Funny wee thing - and so is Moxley

Went home and Mike had cooked the best dinner.  Tofu and paneer with spinach and other yummy stuff.  Coconut cream - which I think makes everything good.  And crunchy red peppers - and a bit of hit spice.  Chillies?  Dunno.  But it was good!

Off to bed while Mike cleaned the kitchen.  The pantry looks amazing now.  I woke up twice in the night as it was a fierce stormy night.  This morning as I fumbled for my Weetbix from the pantry, it looked like Mike had been a machine in there.  Wow.

[Mike here: the reason I tidied the pantry is that I needed unusual things for what I was cooking so I was exploring its deepest darkest reaches. And I found all sorts of weird, wonderful and expired things. Much of it got thrown away and lots of it got moved around to be more accessible. Fun fact: we appear to have about 10 cans of sweetened condensed milk. I have no idea why.]

Off to boxing and then spin.  As you can see, boxing makes my body work much harder.

Boxing followed by Spin - this morning

I can't believe I forgot to take a pic until I actually finished my iced latte
And got a coffee - but forgot until I was done to get a pic.  Doh!

And the day looms large.  Spin after work.  Yay!

Tomorrow we have lawyer stuff at lunch.

Enjoy your day!  Toby is in Chc and waiting to come back to WLG.  Maybe tomorrow?  His photo of the snowy Lindis Pass was wonderful.

Love,
Angela
