The Thursday with nothing for me but a late night for Mike

Hi,

Mike had his haircut last night after work (and then went back to work for a while).  He wants me to put it in my calendar so I can comment on his beautiful haircut.  But, given I hadn't seen him, it seemed a bit unfair to suggest I never complimented him.  I may have stirred when he came in (I think he said I complained about the light being on - and promptly fell asleep again) but I never actually remember seeing him.  And this morning, the first time I saw him, he was in the shower and had wet hair.  So I excuse myself.  I am sure his hair looks lovely!  And if you see him, you should obviously say so!

Last night I rode home and collected Toby.  I was just starting tea when I got a call from Skids (Toby's old after school programme at Wadestown school).  Odd, I wondered if they had just found something of Toby's.  But, no.  Turns out Tom was still there and they couldn't get a hold of either of his parents.  Toby and I stopped cooking and walked around to get Tom.  He was okay, but a bit perplexed as to why he had been left at Skids.  We walked home and he was chatting to Toby superbly.  I haven't seen him so talkative.  The boys played while I finished dinner and then we ate.

Spaghetti bolognese - one of our favourites

John got in touch with me and said it was a miscommunication.  So, no problems.  Phew!  We started to walk Tom back home when Christine pulled up and took him home.  Tom had a great time, as did we.

My ride in this morning was good fun!  Roads were wet, but it wasn't raining like yesterday.  Still a strong, cold southerly though.  Brrrrr.

What does the weekend hold in store?  Movies tonight with Sally and Andrew (but no Mike) and Toby.  We can't see Elysium with Toby as it is R16.  So I think I'll see another movie with him.  Tomorrow we tidy and paint.  I have a movie lined up with Aidan (fingers crossed - Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.  Don't read the reviews!) for Saturday evening.  Sunday is Fathers Day so a nice breakfast is the plan.  Sunday afternoon I'll invite Christine around for afternoon tea.  Sunday night at Sally and Andrew's place for tea.  Oh yeah!  Good weekend!

Have a wonderful weekend yourself!

The Wednesday with a talk about growing gorgeous boys into good men

Hi,

After a tough day at work (made tougher by a tiny amount of my cowboy nature when faced with a critical issue on a client site) I rode home.  That was fun - and Mike had made dinner.  So I got home and sat down to eat straight away.  After chatting to the boys I rushed downstairs to get changed and hopped in the car.  I went to see Celia Lashlie talking about growing gorgeous boys into good men.  It was entertaining and food for thought.

Got home in time to read to Toby before he put out his light.  So, perfect timing.

Mike did all his homework and we had a great sleep.  Actually, oddly, I never even heard the news this morning.  I slept right through it.  Mind you, I did stay up late chatting to Mike about complete rubbish in bed.

My ride in this morning was so wet.  But, perversely, I love it!  My gear is hanging up under my desk now, in a futile attempt to dry before yoga at lunch time.  I hope it's not too wet when I pull it on then!  Yucky.

Have a wonderful day.

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday with dinner out

Hi,

Toby got off the bus in town and we collected his glasses.  He is enamoured with them (for now).  Mike has a photo of him in his glasses.  Perhaps Mike will edit this and attach it.

We went out for dinner with Sally and Andrew.  Just next door to work, at the Royal.  Two mains for $25.  So we scoffed lots of food.

Mike, Toby and I walked home - well, at least to Wadestown library where the car was.  Such a nice evening for a walk.  Back home and to bed.  I was asleep in seconds and had a great sleep.

Walked in with Mike and Yingjie this morning.  Yingjie's car should be fixed by the end of the week.  Fingers crossed.

Have a fantastic day.

Angela

The Monday with nothing much

Hi,

I rode home the long way because Mike had the car in town and said he'd collect Toby.  Yay!  Enjoyed my ride up Ngaio Gorge.

Monday I caught up briefly with Aidan and Duncan.  Aidan had a lecture at Te Papa I wanted to see, but Duncan was unexpectedly sick.  So his mother had to take him to work.  Suited me.  I got to wander around the museum with Duncan while Aidan sorted out her session.  Then we nipped in and watched her presentation.

About to start!
Aidan dropped me back at work and my day passed in a blur.  The ride home was very much needed.

We had dinner and then went for a short walk (Mike was attending the Wadestown Residents Association meeting).  Back home to do the rest of the evening routine.  I fell asleep while Mike was working in bed.  Oh dear!

Had a great ride in this morning.  I saw 60 km/hr on my speedo on the way down the hill.  Nice!

The week does seem to be three days long already though.  And it's only Tuesday.  What's with that?  Mike was funny this morning.  He asked Toby if either of us had signed his prep book (homework book).  Toby looked at him funny and said he'd left it at school.  Mike went through a few outraged sentences about how Toby could possibly leave his prep book at school again.  This time, both Toby and I looked at him funny.  Toby said "Dad, you already told me off about that last night".  Mike looked stunned.  "Oh, was that just last night?".

Ummmmm.  Yep, it was.  Hahahahah.

Have a marvellous day!
Love,
Angela

The weekend with skiing

Hi,

A great weekend of skiing - shame Mike's body is pummeled beyond function.  More about that later - and it wasn't my doing!

Friday we left Wellington easily - me, Toby and Sarah (a friend of Mike's from way back - some of you know her).  Traffic wasn't too awful.  We made good time, passing Mike in the van and Vivienne in her car from time to time.  A stop at Pitstop in Paraparaumu to fix the headlight - go there for your automotive needs!  I suspect they were shut as they were standing around drinking beers.  But the chap changed the bulb for me and only charged me $17.50 for the bulb.  What a hero!

Up at the lodge by 10pm.  Mike was a little later.  Found our room, and crashed out for the night.  Up the next morning to a lovely day.  Mike was off early to make the most of it.  My aim was to ski with Toby.  I think his last run last year scared him a bit and this day was all about having fun again.  I think I did it.

We started with Jenga in the lounge room of the lodge.  Such fun!
Jenga
Wow!

Oops!
Then we got our ski gear and headed out to Happy Valley.

Snack time

Toby skiing

We had a lovely time.  Did quite a few hours together.  Mike, Vivienne and John were fast west and had a ball.  Glorious was what Vivienne called it.

Back to the lodge to snuggle in the bed reading.  I may have slept.  Unfortunately Mike crashed out big time.  He was going about 50 km/hr and misjudged the track and smacked into a snow/ice bank.  He lay winded for quite a while.  Long enough for the ski patrol to come see him.  His body is very sore now.  Toby calls him old man right now.  He can't bend to pick up anything.  Ouch!  So he got into bed with me and Toby and all three of us snuggled before dinner.

Had a yummy dinner.  Sarah's work.  Very nice.  Tidied up and off to bed.  Had a good sleep.  Toby fell asleep on the couch in the lounge!

Up Sunday to eat and tidy.  I got a wee bit of skiing in but the conditions were poor.  Snow is lovely though.  Heaps more than two weeks ago!

Left at 1pm and had a good drive home.

Time to start the week.

Have a wonderful week!

Love,
Angela

The Thursday with nothing

Hi,

After about three hours' sleep the night before, I certainly had a wonderful sleep last night.  I rode home and collected Toby and cooked dinner for him.

Then  I packed for the weekend.  Eventually I gathered enough gear together for me and Toby.  I don't pack for Mike anymore after a disastrous weekend where I "forgot" his boots.  Let me remind you, he stepped over them to leave the front door.  Just so you know.

Anyhow, Mike was supposed to be home early after a night out with work's social club.  But he had such fun he stayed out.  It did mean he was packing this morning.  He did it all - and got the roof top box on.

I am leaving around 4pm with Toby and Sarah (friend) in our car.  Mike is driving the club van with a full load of punters.

Weather is a bit pants.  But you never know your luck.  And I have books if nothing else.

Had breakfast with work mates this morning.  Tried the iced coffee at the Occi (renamed to Old Bailey).  Not too bad at all.

Iced coffee this morning to start the day

Have a great weekend.

The Wednesday with work

Hi,

Wow - a marathon day at work, and back there to finish up a bit early this morning.  But it all worked, after a few hiccoughs.  Happy now.  Tonight I can pack for the ski weekend.

Mike was working late too as he has a deadline today as well.  They seemed happy with their work.  That's good.

Mike will go to our social club event tonight but I am flagging it to go home and relax with Toby.

Can't wait to head to the mountain this weekend.  The forecast is a bit yucky.  But you never know your luck.

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday where I thought it was already Wednesday

Hi,

How long can five days take to pass?  Feels like four already and it's only Wednesday morning.  I'm a bit confused this week.

Anyhow, I rode home in a glorious evening last night and collected Toby.  We started a new routine that includes an evening walk.  So the two of us (Mike was working late) walked after dinner and had a lovely chat together.  I learned all about dinosaurs.  Toby learned about Scorpius (again) and Sagittarius (right beside Scorpius), and Venus - which looks stunning in the west at the moment.

Back home for a bath, reading in bed and sleep.  Mike got home relatively early and we all fell asleep.  Had a great sleep.

This morning I rode in with Mike for the first time in months.  Had a blast as the roads were dry.  Hurtled down the hill.

Theresa has posted the link to TV One news with Mike in his fire warden jacket.  Our fire alarm was triggered by the earthquake, so we had to evacuate the building.  And yes, I have said we need to evacuate to a better location than under 8 stories of glass.  Click on the link below to see Mike a few seconds into the news item looking very calm and full of excellent leadership vibes.

Mike looks so authoritative - and handsome!

I have a long day at work, as does Mike.  So we have got Benjamin in.  Hopefully it is all sweetness tonight for my work migration night.

Have a wonderful day.  Look at Mike on TV often.  It's great!

Love,
Angela

in the news: milling around on the street after the earthquake

http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/stay-inside-during-quakes-civil-defence-says-video-5537701

The Monday with Bruuuuuuce

Hi,

Mike rushed home after work to sort out Toby and Benjamin and got back to work to put in some more time before our movie.  I had a bit more time after my late meeting (which actually finished early) so I met Sally and Andrew for dinner at Dragonfly on Courtney Place.  What a yummy place.

Good food
We met Mike at the cinema and watched Springsteen & I.  What a marvellous movie.  Not biased at all.  Hahahah.  Tickets for his NZ and Aus tour in early 2014 go on sale soon.  We're buying some, if we can.  Woo hoo!

I drove Benjamin home (he is scheduled in for Wednesday too - we have too much work on that evening) and then Sally and Andrew.  And yes, I enjoyed the drive back.

Time to get stuck in for the day.  Today is so gorgeous.  The sort of day that makes you glad you live here.

Love,
Angela

The weekend with some earthquake excitement

Hi,

Well, a decent earthquake at 2.30pm on Friday afternoon put paid to our production migration for Friday evening.  We had to evacuate the building and then we were allowed back in quickly to collect some stuff.  I grabbed my bike and Mike and I rode home past loads of stationary cars.

We got captured on video milling about outside our work, and shots of us are getting used quite often as background shots during the TVNZ earthquake coverage. Like this one: http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/stay-inside-during-quakes-civil-defence-says-video-5537701

It took Toby two hours on the school bus to get home.  50 minutes from the cathedral in Molesworth St to our house.  Wow!  Crazy.

A few decent aftershocks but our house seems pretty solid.  Glad we live so close to town so we can easily walk home if needs be.  In a huge quake I probably wouldn't want to (or be able to) collect my bike from the basement.

Mike left early Saturday for a damp but great tramp to Sayer Hut.  Toby and I had a leisurely morning before heading out to buy Jacob a present.  Then back for lunch at home before going to Paintball in Lower Hutt for Jacob's party.  I left Toby in Jacob's father's hands and had a nice drive back home in the wee green car.

When Toby got back he immediately packed and had a sleepover with Jacob.  So I had the house to myself.  I watched some television (DVD) and fell asleep around 9pm.  Hahahah!  Couldn't even stay up to watch the rugby.

Had a great sleep and then went out to the market with Vivienne.  We also went to the Andy Warhol exhibition at Te Papa.  Great fun.
Fish for supper

We got told off for taking this photo.  It wasn't even inside the hall.  Crazy.

Back home to see Toby and a relaxing afternoon before Mike got home from his tramp.  Then we went out to the Moore Wilson Food and Wine night.  With half of Wellington.  We watched a salsa band for a bit and then went to Courtney Place to eat Oporto Bugers (Toby's new favourite eatery) and an ice cream at Kaffee Eis*.

Back home to bed.

Up early for the Monday morning routine.  Nice ride in.  Early fire alarm at work.  Nice.

Have a wonderful week.
Love,
Angela

Sayer Hut in the rain

Trip: Mangatarere Road End to Sayer Hut, 17-18 Aug 2013

Punters: Mike Gilbert, Ryan Day, Logan Day, Regine Deleu, Marloes Van Kleef.

Cellphone: You lose it just out of Carterton, never to be seen again apart from a smidge right on the top of the knoll if you're lucky.

Notes: Graded E because of the 3-5h route time, but Atiwhakatu Hut or Mt McKerrow this ain't.  The track is unformed, rooty and slippery; there is lots of treefall to be negotiated; and you're always either slogging up to the 771m knoll or grinding your knees down from it.  On both days.  Navigation is fine with the track well defined and lots of orange markers.  The actual start of the track isn't marked, though!  Don't cross the river or head to Mangatarere Lodge at the road-end - stay on the true left bank and walk upstream to ford the river around 300m up - and you'll be fine from then on.

"The shaking hasn't stopped yet! Stay under your desks!" On a Friday afternoon before a tramping trip I wasn't expecting to be crouched on the ground hoping the ceiling didn't fall in.  The tremors subsided and we slightly dazedly emerged to shocked co-workers, a lot of dust in the air but nothing visibly awry.  Then the alarms went off.  We piled outside to the waiting TV One cameras and eventually got told to go home and look after our families.

With a forecast of rain and gales, plus a magnitude-6 earthquake to deal with, I expected a big attrition rate from our Sayer Hut trip.  But trampers are made of sterner stuff than that, and come Saturday morning we were all raring to go.

Ryan and Logan went ahead in Logan's mighty Mitsubishi V3000, old and unbreakable, that we learned had traded amongst his family for a standard price of $200 several times.  Régine, Marloes and I followed on in our car.

There's no point in roughing it until you have to, so Saturday morning breakfast was not cold muesli with reconstituted milk, but salmon on sourdough and espresso from the French patisserie in Greytown.  I couldn't resist slipping a tuna mayo roll from there into my pocket too, to replace the OSM that was going to be my lunch.  I think that I tend to tramp one of two ways – either the bare minimum OSM-and-Backcountry-meal way, or the full-on, foodie way.  Either time and weight is important, or it's not.

Mangatarere Roadend is a place less travelled, and less fashionable than its cooler younger sisters like Holdsworth and Waiohine.  It's at the end of a long, winding road that goes to gravel pretty quickly, narrows to one lane wide with lots of blind corners.  Angela, Vivienne, Benjamin and Andrew had been down this way a couple of years before (http://tararualite.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/sayer-hut.html) so I was a little forewarned.  There was a concrete ford that had been half washed away; would it be fixed?  We saw that the council had indeed solved the problem – they had put up a big sign saying 'End of Council Maintained Road' just before it.  But someone had built up the broken concrete bits with gravel so it was navigable.  However, when we reached the roadend we dubiously eyed the pouring rain and decided discretion was the better part of finding a raging torrent that we couldn't get our cars back through on the Sunday.  So back we went and left our cars safe and sound on the other side of the ford.  It was only a short walk back anyway.

We headed off in steady rain that didn't dampen our spirits.  It was still warm and calm, and our gear kept us warm and dry.  After a short piece of indecision about which way to go – you stay on your side of the river, not crossing a rickety bridge to Mangatarere lodge – we were soon ascending the slippery, muddy ridge that would bring us to the unnamed knoll.

We rapidly formed two groups – Logan, Marloes and Ryan forming the advance party and Régine and I bringing up the rear.  While the Sayer Track is a short walk at 3-5 hours, it's a bit of a surprise for trampers accustomed to easy tracks.  Roots, mud and treefall, not to mention that for almost all of that time you're grunting up to the unnamed 771m knoll and then torturing your knees on the descent, make it a challenging few “easy” hours.

As the last party had warned us, there was plenty of big trees down over the track to climb around and over.  Someone had been through with a chainsaw though, and cleared the worst of it, but not all of it.  All the fallen trees seemed to be the same age, so we debated: why would you carry a chainsaw in but not clear everything you could with it?

The rain didn't abate but neither did the warm and still conditions so it was certainly not unpleasant to walk in.  Forest ranged from mighty towering beech forest to lower shrubby bush to beautiful goblin forest.  The misty rain gave it an ethereal quality where you could imagine dryads and pixies just out of sight, laughing and giggling at these unlikely interlopers in their midst.
Well, someone built this mask, didn't they?

Soon we were on the top ridge and passing '771m knoll', unnamed and unmarked.  The DOC person assigned the job of track marking had celebrated this peak in their own way by putting up a plethora of orange markers but otherwise it was unremarkable.

Then it was down and down and down, interminably down.  Knees begged the hut to be near.  The whole walk was in beautiful forest but with only a few chances to peek out at tree clad and mist framed peaks and valleys. But eventually and abruptly we met Sayer Creek and the Waiohine River flat.  A short skip down the blissfully flat track led to a peek of corrugated iron and a rustic old hut in a clearing.  The rain had eased during our descent, and we reached the hut in clear weather.

What a wonderful hut!  Though fixed and added to and changed over the decades, this hut has the same structure as it did when built at the turn of the 20th century.  Rough sawn and hand shaped wood and logs abounded, and a range of road signs and farm business advertisements showed that cheeky thieves have been with us forever.

Ryan, Logan, Marloes were already there and waiting for us with a blazing fire that Logan tended to it all night.  A curious lack of an axe made things harder, but a combination of jumping on logs and carefully arranging them in the fireplace got us through.

It was only mid afternoon so we went exploring our surroundings.  The Waiohine River was well up, with strong flow and whitecaps in the main channel, and crossing it wasn't an option.  No chance to explore Totara Flats or anything like that.  (It could be possible to bush-bash up our side of the river to the Totara Flats footbridge, but we didn't try that).  There was a big grassy area near the hut that would be perfect for camping, and plenty of fire sites attested to people doing just that.  Plenty of bones also showed some successful hunting had gone on.

We started dinner early.  I'd chosen Chicken Fettuccine from the never-fail Aunty Rata's WTMC Cook Book and it worked perfectly - prepped with Ryan's disturbingly comprehensive selection of knives, heated on my K-mart butane stove and simmered on Ryan's genuine Trangia meths burner. Our only issue was that we had too many mushrooms, which Marloes and Regine dealt to expertly as an hors d'ouevres.

Ryan had a delight of a dessert prepared for us.  It was lots of fun toasting the marshmallows in the fire - we all had different techniques and different tastes (firm or gooey?  Gently baked or sauteed with a dark crust?) and the toffee pop melted marshmallow sensation that resulted was yummy!

MoreThanSmores

Chef: Ryan Day

2 X Marshmallows (1 Pink, 1 White recommended) toasted until hot and gooey over a fire (take your time, and don't burn them!), then place them between two original Toffee Pops (do not use dark or butterscotch Toffee Pops, as they are abominations). The best approach is to "sandwich" the marshmallows between the Toffee Pops to remove them from the roasting stick.

Toffee Pops may be substituted with Chocolate thins (you can pack more in a small pack) or, for classic smores, chocoloate digestives as they are about as close to Gram crackers as you can get in NZ.
It was now getting very late, maybe approaching 8:00pm, and the weather had cleared to a beautiful evening with stars shining over our little valley.  Of course at such a late hour we were getting tired and one by one slipped off to bed.  Ryan made a somewhat disturbing find of a well mummified rat squeezed in between his bunk and the wall; he threw it on the fire and it quietly charred away.

Everybody reported a fantastic night's sleep in the complete quiet and total darkness of Sayer Hut.  I did awake a couple of times to find the hut gently shaking.  Aftershocks were continuing, but it was reassuring to be in a hut that had experienced far worse than that in its 100 years of existence.

Sunrise saw us up and preparing our eclectic variety of breakfasts.  I had the dubious but compact treat of an Apricot One Square Meal; Regine tucked into a packet of leftover rice crackers; Ryan produces a complete cooked breakfast of beef and eggs with baked beans, dehydrated and packed into a Backcountry Meal pack!  It looked disgusting but smelt and I'm sure tasted good.

We foraged for firewood to more than replace the substantial pile we'd burned through over yesterday afternoon - it's good going to a rarely visited hut because there was plenty of wood around.  We cleaned up, and then set off as the same two parties that we'd formed on the way in.  There was only one way out - the same way we went in, and over the same 771m knoll.  I built a cairn at the top from what rocks and branches I could find - it seemed to need more than just a few orange triangles to mark the achievement of summitting it.  The rain had returned, along with a chill breeze - the top of the knoll was the first and only time I felt a little cold, and put on a layer or two of merino.

The descent was muddy and slippery but went quickly.  Again, all of a sudden we were at the Mangaterere Stream that signalled the end of our descent and the short flat walk back out to the car.

The ford we were nervous about was indeed up and fast flowing, probably still passable but I was glad I didn't have to try.  My Corolla doesn't like to swim.

We quickly changed into (mostly) dry clothes and piled into the mostly dry car.  Engine on and heater on full - we headed to the Greytown cafe where the cafe owner took pity on us and gave us our very own heater.  Soup and wedges got us warm and comfortable and ready for the drive home.

Sayer Hut really is something special, and visiting it on a rainy weekend made it even more so.  As the rain clattered on the tin roof, the ghosts of farmers, hunters and trampers past kept us warm, dry and safe.  It definitely should be on your list of huts you have to spend the night in before you die.

The Thursday with nothing much for me but loads for Mike

Hi,

I was hoping to ride home with Mike the long way.  But he had so much work on that he had to stay back and work for ages.  I would have beaten him anyway.  Hahahah.

I cooked tea for Toby and we relaxed watching television.  I fell asleep before Mike got home but at least I was vaguely aware of him being home.  Didn't notice him coming to bed at all though.

My ride in this morning was great again - I love dry roads in winter.  Pedalled like mad, but did manage to see 58 km/hr before watery eyes blurred my vision completely.  Woo hoo!

I have to work late tonight.  Mike is away tramping this weekend.  Toby has a haircut and a party tomorrow.  I would love a long bike ride, but that remains to be seen if it fits in.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with a well Toby

Hi,

Toby is much better now and went to school yesterday.   Wednesdays are swimming lesson day at school, so he was excused from that.  He came home last night with a merit award from school.  He seemed pretty pleased with that!

Toby got an award at school
I caught up with Aidan when she came into town for work meetings and things.  I had an iced coffee at Wholly Bagels.  I have to say, it was probably the poorest effort I have tasted in a long time.

Iced coffee looked okay - but it didn't taste super nice
I went from meeting Aidan into my own series of meetings.  One of the meetings was with my old favourite client down at the Te Papa end of town.  Somehow I found myself at Joe's Garage having a meeting.  So, I got a real iced coffee.  One sip and I was in heaven compared to the earlier version.

My rode home up Ngaio Gorge was fun!  I bet my best time by 4 minutes!  Ooossshhh!  And it was a head wind still - just not as strong as the gale I experienced on my last ride up there!

This morning's ride in was fun too.  Dry roads.  I pedalled like mad down the hill.  Loved it!

Have a fantastic day!

Love,
Angela

The Tuesday with Toby sickness still

Hi,

Mike looked after Toby well yesterday.  In fact, Toby is now well enough for school today.  But I have excused him from the swimming lessons they have today.  Best not throw him in a pool just yet.

Toby did have an optometrist appointment yesterday and now has glasses ordered to correct his astigmatism and short sightedness.  He likes his new glasses and chose them himself.

Looking cool, Toby!
He should get them this time next week and have them fitted to his face a bit more.  He has to wear them in the classroom and watching movies at the cinema and that sort of thing.

I went out to see a movie with Christine last night.  We saw The Heat.  I had no great expectation, so I was pleased that it made me laugh so hard in three places it brought tears to my eyes.  The scene in the bathroom was so funny!  Caught the bus home and was in bed before I knew it.  Mike slept 11 hours last night!  Wow!

It is a stunning morning here in Wellington.  Absolutely gorgeous.  Enjoy it if you're here.

Love,
Angela

The Monday of sickness

Hi,

I stayed home yesterday and looked after Toby.  Just as Mike left (at 7am, because he had a big presentation at 9am) Toby said he wasn't well and rushed to the toilet.  Okay.  No arguing with that evidence.  So I worked from home for half the day.  Mike came home after his big meeting and worked from home while I went into town for an appointment.

Then, in the afternoon, we both worked from the dining room table as Toby lay on the couch.  Toby isn't miserable at all.  Just can't venture far from the toilet.

Mike popped into Scots for the parent teacher interviews.  Toby has only improved his spelling by 7% in term 2.  But the teachers are pleased with that because he is at the 12 year old level already anyway so they can't see how he can improve much more.  We are very proud.  His maths needs a bit of work.  Oddly it is addition and subtraction that is needing work.  His multiplication is already at the level they are aiming for by the end of the year.  Wow!!!  Our son is doing great!  The music teacher though.  Hmmmm.  Toby is shunning his trumpet practice.  So we have to listen to him playing every weekend now.

Mike got a migraine as he was getting ready for bed.  He said he had drunk too much coffee that morning to prep for his meeting. It's a shame for him. At least it sounds like he mostly slept through it all. He'll be woozy today though.

During the night Toby sneaked into our room and slept on our couch.  At 4am he started making odd noises.  I asked him if he was okay and he said he felt sick.  I leaped out of bed and ran around looking for something to use to collect copious amounts of vomit.  Mike found a blanket (how did he do that when he had no eyes in?!?) and Toby continued puking into that.  Actually, we caught nearly every last drop.  Toby shuffled to the toilet and continued there for a while.  Mike still had no eyes in, so I cleaned up and put the wash on.

Yes.  Toby has another day off school!  Mike is at home with him.  I don't feel super well myself.  Neither does Mike.  Hahahah.  Maybe tea will sort me out?

I heard from Aidan yesterday and she is fighting off employers that want her now she is finished her PhD.  I think she is quite chuffed at her work prospects about now.  Good on her.

Have a wonderful day!
Love,
Angela

The weekend of happiness

Hi,

What an amazing weekend.  We often rate our days in our family.  When around the dinner table, Toby might ask us both what we rated our day. Monday to Friday is usually busy and hectic and varies between a six and an eight most days. But weekends? Weekends are off the scale.

I have rated my weekend just gone at ten out of ten. Yep. Can't get any better than that. Yes, Mike asks about my scale as well. Eight out of ten for an average work day doesn't leave a lot of room for manoeuvring in the excellent eight to ten area for awesome weekends. It must be logarithmic. That's my answer.

We left from work a little early on Friday. Mike sorted out getting the laden car to where Toby and Alex got off the school bus in town. Then he went to get the club van and pick up eleven punters. I drove up in the Corolla with Toby, Alex and Yingjie. Yes, I sang pretty much the whole way. Poor Yingjie.

The drive was easy. No speeding from me. Got there by 9.15 pm and met the Tabor family in the car park. Stupid roof top box (which I love, usually) was impossible to open. I wrestled with it for quite some time. Shouting at it didn't make it open any faster. I noticed Mike swearing at it on Sunday morning. Not sure that technique worked either. But at least he explained to me why it does it.

So my love affair with the roof top box is back on track after some counseling. I understand it much better now. I know how it works. I'll try not to overload it so it refuses to cooperate with my requests to open and close. Although they do seem like sensible requests to me of a roof top box.

Anyhow, I eventually opened it by sheer brute force. Hauled the gear out . Yingjie sensed somehow my frustration. Hmmm. More yoga and Zen needed, Angela!

By the way, I had my first yoga class Friday lunchtime. Great fun. Will do it every Friday I can. I am hoping for greater core strength and inner calm. Or something. Ha ha. It's hard work.

Anyway, I got the gear out. Yingjie helped me as did the boys. The snow was sparse and crusty. We settled into the lodge.

After an hour or so Mike arrived with the van. I wandered down to get more stuff from the car. Yes, I carried a breadmaker up to the lodge. Helped some of Mike's newbie punters walk on the snow. One wee lad was keen to hold my hand as he gingerly walked down an icy patch. I got him to the flat part and walked back up only to have his mother also grip me in an iron grasp as she tried to walk down the path. The wee boy was fascinated as to why I wasn't wearing gloves. Told him I didn't find it too cold. And it wasn't. Shame. The skifield needs a lot more snow. But they won't be getting it at these balmy temperatures.
.
Back up to the lodge and settled in for the night. Slept quite well. Up to help Josh and Aidan cook breakfast. My goodness they are good together in the kitchen. Scrumptious bacon and scrambled eggs. Yep, I started skiing on a very full tummy.

We sorted out people in Happy Valley. Benjamin was trying snow boarding for the first time. He had a lesson. We left him there in the safe hands of the instructors.

Duncan and Emerson also got a lesson. Toby sledded with Alex all day (when they weren't inside playing and eating). While the boys had a lesson I managed to get a run in with Aidan. She skis beautifully but her brain tells her she can't do it when the terrain gets a bit exciting. After a twenty year hiatus in skiing, that's understandable. And perhaps the conditions weren't ideal for me to take her on a blue run for her first time in ages.

Hindsight is twenty-twenty.

Aidan staring off into the distance, looking comfortable at the top of the run.

However, in my defence, I think she only fell because her bindings were set for a 30 kilo twelve year old. Any pressure on them and she'd pop out. I think she would have stayed on her skis quite a bit more if they had been working as they should!

We met Vivienne at the top of the run and skied with her. She is a great skier. That's the first time I have skied with Vivienne. We should do so in decent conditions. Can't wait!

Anyhow, there was this exciting bit. You had to schuss down a steep wee bit to  gain enough speed to get up the other side. Aidan wasn't fully appreciating this speed aspect. She said she'd watch me and follow what I did to get up enough speed. Fortunately I said I should follow her. Just in case.  Well, her silly skis popped with her first turn and she slid down the steep wee section, leaving a trail of ski gear behind her. She wasn't fazed by this at all. I collected her skis on my way down and she calmly perched on the edge of the slope and put her skis back on.  From there she did no turns and made it up the slope with plenty of speed. And I didn't break her. I had been warned to bring her back to Josh intact.

Did another run with Mike looking for Josh. Then I sat with Aidan while Mike went looking for Josh again. Eventually we all met up and went back to Happy Valley to collect the boys.

I spent the rest of the afternoon skiing with Benjamin. He was boarding really well by the end of it. I can't take credit. It all came together for him on a run with Aidan. She had no idea it was his first day on a board and I asked for a run with her. So she took off and I said to Benjamin we had to catch her, speed demon freak she was. Benjamin planted boot and did an amazing run. Turning like a pro.

The rain sent us back to the lodge eventually. It's so not fun skiing in rain. Snow, yes. Rain, never! It's an abomination on a skifield.

The gourmet feast was all on. Such great good.  Garlic bread rolls to start (made from scratch).  Casserole, mash.  Spicy pumpkin and kumara soup.  All yummy.

Mike has his dessert! Notice how he made sure it was before the hordes of kids.

A sunset kicked it off nicely. What a great evening. Awesome food, great conversation.  We may have garnered some strange looks from other punters when between dinner and dessert, I interrupted a conversation between Mike and Aidan.  As I sat down, Aidan leaned forward, and whipped her hair into a pony tail and said loudly "Have a sniff of my hair.  I'm using that new conditioner and Mike can't smell it".

Riiiiight.  Like that's perfectly normal post dinner conversation.  So of course, I took a big smell.  Seemed to work as it smelled nice enough.  Melons apparently.  So I said so.  Mike seemed put out by this proclamation of mine, and asked for another smell of Aidan's hair.  He decided it smelled like lemons.  Melons, lemons.  At least it was something fruity.  Hahahah.  I asked him to smell my hair because I had just washed mine using Toby's yummy kids Blueberry shampoo which always smells good enough to eat.  But he said my hair smelled like nothing.

Upon reflection, I am happy with it smelling like nothing.  Nothing offends no one.  Hahahah.  It can't have been too weird because people still talked to us afterwards.

Went to bed quite early but I woke when Mike came in and took a while to get back to sleep.

Wonderful sunset - Mt Taranaki looked amazing in the far distance

Up early for a gourmet breakfast extravaganza. How on earth did Josh and Aidan whip up such a wonderful breakfast with the ingredients we had on offer?  Between the two of them, and Ilske's apple danish sweet diversion, people were happy!

Scrumptious!
The weather was a bit pants, so we tidied up and all left.  The hot pools were in our sights.  Mike and I soaked in a private pool while Toby swam with  Alex in the main pool.  Then we drove back to Wellington.  At one point we got an iced coffee from the petrol station for me, and lunch from Maccas (I had leftover breakfasts!).  I dribbled coffee down me as I drove and without hesitation, Yingjie wiped my chin.  I felt well looked after!  Made me laugh though.

We got home in time for Alex to make his swimming lesson.  Awesome.  And that included a delay at Mana for an incident.

I had such a great weekend.  I have skied with Aidan finally.  And she is as good at that as she is at other things she tries.  Perhaps if it wasn't entirely unpleasant, she might consider it again.  Benjamin seems to be a natural at the snowboarding lark.  So, all in all, it was a marvellous time.

I'm working at home today as Toby is rather sick.  Both ends of him are quite loose and free with bodily fluids.  Nice.  He is never sick like this so he is fascinated and gives running commentaries on what is going on.  Nice.  I have done a bit of washing this morning already (accidents).  Bedding and undergarments are very clean in our house now.

Have a wonderful week.  My parents are back after their exciting adventures away.  I can't wait to hear more.

Love,
Angela

The Thursday with user grop

Hi,

I stayed late to go to my user group session.  It was well attended.  Who knew that so many people were interesting in how to report out of applications.  Hahahah.  We all are!

I had a nice surprise at the end.  Mike and Toby came in to get me.  I got a text saying they were coming to pick up their favourite girl.  I had to assume that was me.  It made me feel special.  We walked to McDonalds (and although this might be the real reason they came into town) and Mike and Toby had dinner.

Back home and Mike did some more running around for the weekend.  Toby went to bed.  I helped Mike with the last bit of packing.  If I have left something behind it is too late.

Had a good sleep and then a mad rush finding last minute things this morning.  I walked to the bus stop with Toby and had a good time doing that.  I hated the bus ride in.  Hate the bus.  Love my bike.

Can't wait to head away to the mountain for the weekend.  Bring it on!  Lots of fresh snow overnight please.  With stunning sunshine tomorrow.  Ummmm.  The forecast has other plans.  But what do they know?

Love,
Angela

The Wednesday with nothing for me and tramping club stuff for Mike

Hi,

I rode home via Ngaio Gorge again last night.  It was so windy - and a head wind at that.  At one point at the bottom of the gorge, me and the bike in front copped a gust that blew us off course by almost a metre as we both fought to keep control.  Scary stuff.  Fortunately it was a spot with a decent shoulder to ride along so I wasn't blown into traffic.

Mind you, as I got to the top, I saw a council recycling bag of rubbish lying on the road in front of me.  I saw I could get around it easily without getting into traffic.  But as I approached it to its right, a gust blew the bag right under my front wheel.  I remember thinking I was going to come a cropper.  But my cleats unclipped and I managed to stay upright with this bag wedged under my wheel.  I fished it out and carried it to the kerb and stuck it behind a wheelie bin.  It made my heart beat a bit faster.

Despite the horrid conditions, I got home only a minute slower than the night before.  Can't wait to time it when there is no wind!  Or a southerly!

Mike was out and about, working late and then tramping club to get lodge keys.  The weekend is shaping up to be really awful weather-wise.  Mike is typically grumpy about the Ruapehu gods that hate him.  I told him it was a weekend to relax and eat.  With the slim prospect of some skiing.  Maybe.  The season is looking a bit pants really.  Even Mt Hutt hasn't had snow since mid July.

What else has been happening?  I packed for the weekend (well, me and Toby).  Cooked tea.  Did laundry (being away for the weekend means no laundry done).

I wonder how my parents are getting on gadding about in Alaska and Canada.  I bet they are loving it.  Last time they were away somewhere exotic, they ended up in the middle of a tsunami warning.  It seems they have escaped any natural disasters this time.  They need a smartphone so they can stay in touch while overseas.  I miss their communications.

Have a lovely day!

Angela

The Tuesday with a school evening

Hi,

We arranged Benjamin to babysit Toby due to a school evening that we only just found out about.  Term 3 has a big component of Toby's learning wrapped up in something they are calling "The Exhibition" and it is something different from what they have done in previous years.  It's rather exciting.  Now you know as much as me.  All I know is that Toby is excited by it and Mike wishes he'd gone to Scots College!  Hahahah.

We came straight home and I dropped Benjamin home.  We managed a few tasks for the evening but pretty much straight to bed.

Busy at work like usual.

Have a wonderful day!

Angela

The Monday of finding things

Hi,

I rode home the longish way - up Ngaio Gorge for a change.  I'll try and make that my regular route home for a few months.  I'm also going to ride home via Ngauranga Gorge once a week.  That should be better than my usual short but steep ride home.

Yesterday (Monday, that is) was the day Aidan handed in her thesis.  That doctorate is so close now!  I was lucky enough to get lunch with her and Josh and she looked so relaxed I thought she might slide off her chair.  Yep - it was a pretty good day yesterday.

When Mike and I got home, we cooked dinner and then it was "Find the missing things" evening.  Toby's cellphone had been missing for a week.  As were the Corolla car keys.  And my wee micro USB charger. We started tidying and I found the missing car keys super fast.  After tidying a few places around the house, I declared the phone not in the house and went up to the car.  I found Toby's cellphone in the car seat pocket (good place to put it Toby - shame you never remembered it was there though) and found my charger under the car seat where Mike dropped it.

Mike mopped out the storage area under the stairs and cleared away the stuff by his bed.  And he did his homework.  We had a very satisfying night of tasks done.  I even got a CD made for the drive up on Friday night to Mt Ruapehu.  Yep - all came together nicely.

Toby had a good first day back at school.  He is calling his teacher the best teacher in the world.  So that's a good first day.

Have a wonderful day today.  The weather is lovely this morning here.  I enjoyed my ride into work.  We have a Scots College parent evening tonight.

Love,
Angela

A simple guide to burning an MP3 CD with iTunes

Everyone knows that Apple's core strength is its design ethos reflected in the user experience.  They're a true software company that places design elegance above everything.

iTunes shows this perfectly.  Compare for instance the experience burning a CD:

In Windows Media Player:

1. Start Windows Media Player
2. Select the tracks you want to copy.
3. Click 'Burn'.

In iTunes:

1. Start up iTunes
2. iTunes notifies you that a new version is available and you must install it before you proceed.
3. Install the new version of iTunes.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Find the album you wish to burn to CD, and purchase it on iTunes.
6. Enter your iTunes password
7. Reenter your credit card
8. Attempt to buy the album again
9. See a 'The connection was reset' error when a track tries to download.
10. Click 'download' several times, not because it does anything but it relieves your frustration a little.
11. Google the problem and find that the solution is to reconfigure your router to point to a random DNS server on the other side of the world.
12. Screw your eyes up and try restarting your computer, router, and modem for luck.  It sounds easier than reconfiguring your router.
13. Try to download again.
14. Hooray! The 'connection was reset' error has gone!
15. But, you now get a 'Your computer is not authorised' error.
16. Look around for a way to 'authorise' your computer.  Fail to find it.
17. Google the problem and find that this is a new feature of the version of iTunes you just had to install, and that option is under a menu that is hidden by default and reactivated by an obscure button about 10 pixels wide.
18. Enter your iTunes password again.
19. Now start building up a playlist for the MP3 CD you want to burn.
20. Select 'Burn playlist to CD'
21. See error - some of your tracks are in a foreign format.
22. Look in Windows Explorer and see that the album you just downloaded has come down in m4a format.
23. Stare in perplexity at the screen.
24. Check the 'download as' setting that you set ages ago to ensure you never had to deal with m4a format songs again
25. Discover that this setting has reverted to m4a with the new version you just installed.
26. Go to every song you just downloaded, and select 'create mp3 version' for each song
27. Now, you have two copies of each song, with no way of telling which is mp3, and which is m4a.
28. Delete the m4a songs from your playlist, then randomly pick a song copy to put back in.
29. Use 'View in windows explorer' for each song, to see if you picked the right song.  You have a 50:50 chance, after all, so the odds are okay.
30. Repeat steps 28-29 until all your songs are in mp3 format.
31. Now realise your playlist is completely mis-ordered.  Vainly try to put it back how you meant it to be.
32. Now select 'Burn playlist to CD'
33. After a short time the CD will finish burning and be ready to play in your car stereo.

Simple!

The weekend with lovely weather and stand up paddle boarding

Hi,

What a wonderful weekend.  I had a ball.  I wish every weekend was as much fun as that one.  Well, actually, a lot of weekends are that much fun.  But for different reasons, I guess.

Friday night we got Benjamin in to look after Toby while Mike and I went go karting with work.  Turns out Mike's team came first and my team came second.  We had a blast!

Saturday morning Mike got up and made Toby and me breakfast in bed.  Very nice it was too.  Then we hurtled out of the house in a rush.  We had to be in Lindale for a 1pm Paintball session with the Tabors.  We hadn't been there since we lived here last many years ago.  We ordered lunch at the cafe there and I had a great iced coffee.
Lovely weather

They forgot our order and eventually Mike reminded them.  But it meant we were a bit late getting to the paintball about 50m away!  After being so early too!

The boys all suited up and ran around for the best part of 2 hours.  It went really fast for me because I chatted to Aidan over tea.

Toby in his kit
All ready
Everyone loved it!  They had such a good time.  A few bruises to show where some got shot.  But they all loved it!  Thanks for such a good time!

We went back to Aidan and Josh's place and I said yes to heading to the estuary to try stand up paddle boarding.  I borrow a shirt from Mike and shorts from Aidan and away we went.  Emerson came along too.  I had a ball paddling Josh's board.  Emerson also loved it.  I'd give that a go any time, thanks, Josh!

Me standing up and paddling.  Look at the weather!
Aidan and Mike came a bit later with fish n chips and we ate on the beach.  Such a lovely evening.  Toby had a turn paddle boarding too.  He wants another turn one day as well.  Josh may have given us all a lovely new hobby.

Mike and Josh and Lulu
Aidan and I escaped outside once back at their place and had a look at the wonderful night sky.  I love the sky from their place as it has a great western perspective we don't have at home.  I showed Aidan Scorpius and I hope she can find it on her own whenever she gets the chance to look up on a glorious winter evening. Toby wrangled a sleepover for the evening so Mike and I left him there enjoying the hospitality and drove back home.  We had a great sleep and woke late to again hurtle out of the house.  Back to Waikanae with lunch in hand.  Had a look at Aidan's CV.  Josh sanded his new board (it looks so great!) and the boys played.

Back home to get ready for the week.  Toby is back at school.  Minus his socks apparently.

Have a wonderful week.
Love,
Angela

The Thursday with busy work

Hi,

I had a work meeting (a training session really) until late, so Mike went home with Toby and cooked a scrumptious dinner.  I am very lucky.  I rode home after the session and sat and chatted to Mike while I ate his tea.  Yep - pretty lucky.

Because I was home so late, the evening disappeared.  Before I knew it, I was in bed and reading.  And it was late as well.  Slept like a log.  Mike was woken by a decent wee shake at 1am, but I didn't notice a thing.  Earthquake?  Where?

Certainly felt the one just past 11am yesterday though.  A Thursday morning surprise.  I was in the act of leaning against the kitchen bench at work when the earthquake happened.  I thought I'd somehow broken the bench when it moved as I leaned my hip onto it.  Then I tensed to figure out if it was going to get worse and I needed to leap to my turtle position.  But, no.  Over before I could process it really.

My work event this weekend has been postponed.  So I am available for the social events happening now.  Go karting with work tonight.  Paintball with Duncan and Emerson tomorrow.  Mike and Toby are keen to play and I think Josh might lend a hand.  Well, actually, truth be told, I am hoping Aidan would prefer a cup of tea somewhere around about that time.  Fingers crossed.

My ride in this morning was great.  The southerly is strong, but dry.  The roads were as dry as they ever get, even in the middle of summer.  So I pedalled furiously down the hill.  Loved it!  Saw 55km/hr at one point on my wee bike computer speedo.  Nice.  The southerly meant I couldn't go much faster.

Have a fantastic weekend.
Love,
Angela

The Wednesday in Auckland

Hi,

What a hectic day.  I went to the gym and rode my bike again.  Got nice and hot and sweaty.  Showered and checked out.

Had a busy morning at work then drove the car to Henderson and had an afternoon of meetings at the client.  I changed my client password, which was the most important thing to do as it has to be on-site.

Then we were off to the airport.  Easily done and safely at the gate to read for a while before the flight.

Mike and Toby met me off the plane which was a lovely surprise.  Because there was a work colleague, we had an exclusion zone around kissing and hand holding.  But once he was gone, I got smothered in cuddles and kisses.  Well, Toby had no qualms about Alvin being there and Alvin did comment on how someone must have missed me a lot.

We went out to dinner at Original Thai in Island Bay.  Then we dropped Toby off for a sleepover at Isaac's house and went home.  We watched some TV and then fell asleep.  Your own bed is so nice after being away.

Busy few days and I have late night work to do Friday for a migration (from one system to another - out of office hours).

Happy birthday to wee Karen today!  She'd be happy with the weather here today.

Love,
Angela
